I think all figures work in all of the games from different countries, so it depends where you are

Yeah I think it is all based off of the default language your console is set to. So an Asian Wham Shell should work on a US SSA. Assuming there isn't a region lock, which I doubt.

It'd be awesome to have some Japanese character cards! Add a nice bit of diversity to my collection. At least one character of each element...and I know which ones I'd pick!

The packaging is region-specific, the cards are region-specific, but the figures are the same... All the region-specific stuff for in the game is in the CODING, on the game disc. The game reads the figure as character #268, checks a database to determine that #268 is Wham Shell, and as such draws Wham Shell. Then, it looks in the Wham Shell collection of sound clips, checks the console for what region you're in, and picks the Wham Shell sound clips for the language appropriate to your region.

So no, if you buy a Japanese figure, you won't be hearing them speak Japanese. And yes, they should work in other language versions of the game.

Note that I say all this with complete confidence, despite having never seen a Japanese Skylander, or seeing any coding. That is how thorough my understanding of how this all works is. My extensive programming background lets me understand how it works.

...And there's that too, LOL! My Polar Whirlwind and LC Pop Fizz from Italy speak English, not Italian. My Scarlet Ninjini from Germany speaks English, not German. But I knew ahead of time they wouldn't.

It's for similar reasons that we won't see any REAL surprise characters for Giants. Anyone who looks different in the game must already be programmed into the game, because that's where all the coding is. They can't come out with someone the game doesn't know about. And this is why the Giants/Newlanders don't work in SSA. The coding for them isn't present in SSA, the game doesn't know how to draw them or their attacks, or have sound clips for them.
