Spyro didn't die, he evolved :P or maybe when he crossed over into the Skylanders timeline he mutated.

Would the old Spyro be one to die, withered away in a dungeon?

Is not classic spyro is tail is too big and is horns are to close to the eyes

And if you look carefuly he got the spikes on the wings, classic didint have them...

By George, I think he's got it!

Looking at it, I can only assume it's Sun Dragon/Fire Dragon, who is what Spyro was originally going to be when it was called Spyro Kingdom, but then they figured that you cannot have a Spyro game without Spyro as the player, and removed Sun Dragon/Fire Dragon in favor of the Purple Hero himself. The Skeleton might just be a reference to that.
