I can't say I think of it as a Spyro game, I think of it as a game with Spyro in it. It's obviously just a spinoff series using Spyro as it's driving vehicle.
Spyro's not any more important then any other protagonist in the game - heck, he's not even the first name in the title. I be the second game will be "Skylanders: -----'s Adventure" or such as.

I don't see the game as a Spyro game at all. I totally agree with you that it's just a game with Spayro in it. But I hope if they're making a Skylanders 2 game that Spyro will be in it again though.

I'd actually say yes. While Spyro himself isn't any more important than the other Skylanders, there's clear signs that the gameplay is inspired from Spyro's roots, and even the cast of characters can be seen as inspired by the Spyro 2 allies (Flynn ~ Hunter, Cali ~ Elora, Hugo ~ Professor and Auric ~ Moneybags). Kaos, I don't think is inspired by Ripto, though.

No I do not think it is a Spyro game at all, think they just attached his name to the game.
There are some hints and winks to Spryo....elements ,gems ,characters, and looks. It's a new franchise in my point of view.

I kind of see it as a Spyro game, since it keeps some elements.
Flynn could be a reference to the first Spyro game since he is a balloonist with a similar appearence as the ones in the first game. Auric and Moneybags of course look similar. Spyro, Cynder, and Sparx (Dragon peak item) are in it. Spyro's back story is a combination from the original series, and the LoS series. I could go on and on about these.

Personally I would consider Skylanders a new and fresh game that simply uses a couple characters from an older series for recognition purposes. Skylanders definitely stands on it's own two feet.
I don't think Skylanders needs to be a "Spyro" game any more than the Mario games needed to be "Donkey Kong" games (since the Mario series used characters from the Classic Donkey Kong game).

For me, it's about as much a Spyro game as Super Smash Bros.: Brawl is a Sonic game. Yes, Brawl has Sonic in it, and even plenty of Sonic themes, but at the end of the day, it's a great game that just happens to feature Sonic. Like Skylanders, whether you choose to play as him or not is optional, and there are certainly better characters out there to choose from in both.
There's plenty of nods and winks to please older Spyro fans, but it really is a Skylanders game that only happens to feature the titular dragon. |

I don't see it as a spyro game, it's completely your choice to play as him, or to not play as him. You can play as double trouble, wrecking ball or voodood to complete the game.

I do consider it as a Spyro game. You can see they've done more than just throw Spyro in there. There's tonnes of references to the Classic and LoS games (Auric, balloonists, sparx, SHEEP and etc for Classic, and the elements, Cynder, Malefor, the cheetah tribes and etc for LoS.).

I say skylanders is a spyro game because
1. His name is in the title 2. He's in the Intro, Ending, and almost every commercial 3.Hugo calls out his name in the first level. |

Not especially... It felt like it at first, but that was whem the game was new to me and I needed to level Spyro. But now hat I got new characters I use them alot more to get thier levels and gold reserves up. Ultimately it's not really a Spyro game because none of the characters got development including him, and despite his name being in the title, if Spyro OR any of the other 31 guys he's friends with can do what he does, then he's not all that speacial to the plot of the game. If he gets his own game after this, I hope he's the only character, because then it's more like he specifically has to be there, rather than the 'we need a volunteer, anyone will do' thing we have going on now.
Not to say I dislike Skylanders, it's fun, but just not what I would really call a Spyro game.

I also think it's just a game with Spyro in it. I say this because it doesn't seem like Spyro gets a lot of game play in the game. In fact honestly it seems like trigger happy gets more play than Spyro does.

yes... and why.... i have played alot if the spyro games(ps1/ps2) and this is of pretty much the same quality as i expect of a spyro game. this spyro game is a new start as i see it so it is no squeal or anything from the old games. yet it got more characters/figurines than other spyro games and you can play as any of them... anyway i think there is to much tinkering about the other characters/figurines ingame... but for one second... if you only had spyro and not any of the other characters/figurines... you put him on the portal, i bet everyone here would agree it was a spyro game....

I think that it's a Spyro game. I think that the ruins are Stone Hill and when my dad walked in and saw Treetop Terrace he instantly yelled out "Treetops!". For almost every level I could name one just like it in the originals.

Even some of the music sounds like the classics from the first 3 games. Has anyone really listened to some of the music and heard it? I sure have. Besides, there are TONS of refrances from the past games in Skylanders. There was a topic about it a while back... but I think it died... D:

Yes, I do still consider it a Spyro game.
It has more than enough things that are similar to the games, including nods and references to all Spyro games. Spyro might not be the only playable character, but it certainly has enough elements to be a true Spyro game. It's just another reboot for Spyro, this time brining in a whole host of new friends, just like LoS did. |

Personally, I can't say it's a Spyro game. It features him in it but it's still a fun game. Yes, there are references to old Spyro games, but that doesn't make it a Spyro game. He is only 1 of 32 characters. I do love the game though and hope they do continue it and am glad they have these references. I have never disliked any Spyro series or game with him and this is no exception. I had intended to never even spit in the direction o this game when I saw the original images, but it grew on me.

Just something I realised... All these people are saying it's not a Spyro game because you can choose not to play him at all, right? But then doesn't that make DotD not a Spyro game? You could easily get through the game only using Cynder for 99% of the time,

^ This.
With that logic, DotD isn't a Spyro game either. And I do consider it a Spyro game. Come on, it has plenty of Classic and LoS references in it. It has enough elements for a Spyro game (a spin-off, at the least). Besides, the whole "there's 32 characters" thing shouldn't matter. There was more than just Spyro as a playable character in LoS (DotD) and YotD.

Good points ...I barley used Spyro, so maybe you guys are right?
But I have also gone back and played a few older Spyro games now, they are nothing like Skylanders Spyro's Adventure!!! Also I did not buy this game because of Spyro and I did not even know what a Skylander was before I got it...I bought it on the concept and creative idea (putting toys into the game.) So in my opinion still not a Spyro game....more of a spin-off like many of you mentioned.

I'm on the boat of people feeling more like it's a game with Spyro in it, and not a 'Spyro game'.
I never played the 'Legends' games (I didn't care for the gameplay, or the way Spyro was changed; my sister liked it but could set her mindset and just think of it as a different character) but I do see the homages to the Classics, which I enjoy. But I can't think of it as the same game. In fact, I don't really correlate it to Spyro hardly at all. Heck, we own all three of the available Spyros and I've yet to touch one. =P The hilarity of this might be that my fiance refuses to play anything but his Dark Spyro, and he's never touched a Spyro game in his life...

Yes. This game originally was supposed to be a much grittier Spyro game, but eventually got reworked into the game we play today. As such, you can figure that Spyro is sort of a "guest" in this universe, but it ties enough references to previous games to make it a standalone title in the series.
And you can think of it this way as well; This is an alternate Universe Spyro. It's not the same Spyro from the original trilogy, it's not the one from the GBA/DS games, and its not the one from TLoS. (Although, it does borrow pieces of the mythos from that game)
