...and my son is 12 and we play Skylanders together and love the game. Don't let peer pressure rule your life. Do what YOU want to do, not what you think other people want you to do or what you think might be cool. That is exactly how people fall into bad habits and get pressured into doing bad things that they really don't want to do (ie; smoking, drugs, etc...)

Be confident in who you are and don't let anyone else put you down for what you want to do.

Growing old is mandatory, but growing up is not. ;-)

That's where you need to be confident in yourself. Why would they make fun of you? Maybe they are making fun of you because they are insecure themselves? A *true* friend would never make fun of another friend for something that they like or believe in. Maybe this is a way to figure out who your true friends are? Invite only your best friend(s) over for a game of Skylanders. You may find that they are just jealous of you and ultimately want to participate in your gaming fun.

Do what makes you happy. Doing otherwise is only lying to yourself. I am 41 years old and love the game. Who cares if your friends don't play it? Doesn't mean you have to tell them about it, or expect them to be interested in it. You will find out later that there are much more important things to worry about, other than whether your friends like the same video game as you. Who cares if your friends don't want to play it though? It's a fun game. Maybe you should ask them to try it! I've gotten a few friends to play this way. (Unfortunately the creepy stalker guy in the dorm now sits waiting to pounce on the free controller but that's another story for another thread.) They can't rag on it if they haven't tried, right?

Plus if they make fun of you, THEY'RE the losers. Seriously, what is it with people not knowing that "if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all"?

I play with my 6 year old son... even my 4 year old daughter has her favorites, even though she just watches us play. I love the game and really enjoy it. It is funny, well done, great gameplay, has a wonderful replayability (a big plus) and you can co-op and vs battle. game is so well done, its scary. Plus its a brilliant marketing/moneymaking scheme for activision because not only does it appeal to gamers, but it appeals to collectors as well... I know I will get them all and already cant wait for Giants...

Plus hunting for them is half the fun... no matter how pissed off you get at the lack of availablity... Its more of the fact that we want them and want them now... I will not be worried unless I dont have them all by the time Giants comes out... till then, I am pretty sure I will find all of them that I need.... it just will take time... I can wait.. I will not pay double or triple the price online just because I "have" to have it... I will wait and keep checking stores until I find them all.... We never know... in 3 months, they may be all over the stores... Then everyone will be crying for Giants to come out... we will see....

^ Forty isn't that old.

Edit:

To joerox123:
Sorry to hear about your "Coaco" I had a cat with the same name that was killed by my dog when she was only a month old. It was quite a tragic sight for me, I was your age when it happened.

Anyway, don't let what people think of you get to you. I was harassed in school for liking Pokemon when all of the kids who harassed me admitted that they did it because they liked Pokemon too and didn't want others to know. Your friends probably wont pick on you for liking Skylanders because usually when kids bully others it's due to an insecurity that they have. So in other words, if they are picking on you it's because they like something that they think they will be bullied about. If everyone's honest and respects what the other person likes, then there's no reason to harass each other. Try talking to your friends to see what they might like that they could be embarrassed about and sympathize with them. Trust me, almost everyone, if not, everyone has at least one thing that they like that they're too embarrassed to admit.

You do realise the target age group for Skylanders is 6-12? You are 11. You're supposed to play it.

And you shouldn't care what others think, I'm 15 and still completely obsessed with cartoons.

So, if his friends state that he's a loser for playing, then ask them why it's sold over 200 million dollars worth of stuff. I think it's probably one of the cooler games I've played in some times. Granted it could get better, but it's unique, and fun. I grew up with a twin brother who I used to hang out with all the time and his friends, and I'd get made fun of all the time. I was one of those "sensitive" kids. I've learned in my 35+ years of life that it's too short to worry about friends you have at a young age. The cool ones will play with you and will enjoy it. Life is much better when you're not one of the "cool" kids anyways. You define what is cool in life. My wife calls me a nerd for buying Skylanders. Know how I met my wife? From our mutual interest in Harry Potter of all things. And my wife is ridiculously hot, smart, funny and pretty cool. We both can make fun of one another for our interests. So moral of the story. Be yourself. Friends come and go. But the best friends don't judge you (too hard) for the things you're into. In life we will always deal with bullies. To this day I experience it, even at my job. But that's life. You learn to be better by doing something those people won't do. You kill them with kindness. I guess though it's always a bit different as a kid. We feel the need to prove ourselves to other kids that we fit in. Another reason the kids may make fun of it, is possibly they can't afford it. Or their parents refuse to pay the steep price for it. I don't know if this was asked, I skimmed the thread only, but have they even tried it? Have they tried to play the arena player vs player stuff? It's no different than Super Smash Brothers or even World of Warcraft.

My name is Ryan. I am 35, and I play Skylanders.

Tell em if they don't think it's cool, then they can go play (what do kids play these days anyways? Modern Warfare 3...I don't have kids yet...lol)

Okay...I rambled a bit there.

here's a tip that will probably save your life; high school is a fabrication. it's practically useless from an education standpoint, it's basically daycare for teenagers.

I play the game in my free time because I enjoy it and I can afford it. Period. What anyone else thinks of it is inconsequential in my eyes.

I feel like this is overstated. If you don't get sufficient grades and study hard in high school, it's going to make college or getting into college a son of a gun. And if you don't have a college degree, you're going to be fighting an uphill battle to get a decent, well-paying job with good benefits and all of that for the rest of your life. While the social aspect of high school ends up being irrelevant, the actual educational side is very important, IMO. The need to get yourself on the right path for college is very important and will continue to be, as the ever-growing mass of unskilled labor competes against itself and needs to find a way to stand out.

Unless you're cool with being a waiter or a McDonald's employee all of your life, in which case, more power to you.

So...here's my thoughts. College is one thing, but even if you get a 3.00 gpa out of 4, you can still get into a acceptable school. If you get a 2.00-3.00 you can go to a community college and buckle down for 2 years and get a 3.5 or even a 3.25 and get all your basic classes out of the way in a smaller setting and then make the jump to a 4 year school that is higher accredited. So yes, high school was pointless. I find the people who excel further in life are the unpopular kids, that don't party, drink or hang in the cool crowd. If I go back and look at what the "popular" kids are doing now. The only ones that amounted to anything are the ones that were rich. The vast majority of the other ones all burned out and are doing crap jobs and are not exactly in great shape, look tired and old and seem to have done less with their lives. If I wanted to feel better about my existence, I'd go to my 20 year reunion. But I feel just fine knowing where I am today...and high school isn't what shaped who I am. I did.

I still care a lot about what others think of me (even though I'm trying to not care as much), but you know, you shouldn't have to apologize for having an opinion. If you like Skylanders, you like it. You don't need to pander to others interests to get them to like you. Besides, kids your age SHOULD like it. You don't need to drop your interests to please the preps and jocks at your school.
If they're going to tease you for an opinion, they aren't friends, they're *****y little kids who need to have a childhood and accept others interests.

Besides, why do you need to be cool?

I did.

Fair enough. I can't necessarily disagree with what you said about GPAs, although I might argue that the years you spend in High School are formative in terms of work ethic, and that's an important part of getting anywhere. Ultimately though, I think the biggest difference in our opinions is just the definition of "pointless".

Well, I'm 15, and I love this game to death.

I can be childish, and serious when I want to be, and if I feel if the situation is better for either or.

So don't feel like a loser. Since I'm about 4 years older than you, going into 9th grade, and in Pre AP classes, and the fact that I don't feel like a loser at all for liking MLP, Spyro, or Skylanders.

Moogle

If a kid wants to learn what a work ethic is. Tell him to take a job that makes you bust your butt at 16 years old. And take away any money you give him as a parent and make him earn it, the same way I did. I was a dishwasher to start out, then a line cook, and working in a fast paced, fast thinking environment is 10x harder than actually doing well in school. I don't remember jack about high school, but I remember everything about working hard. Working a hard job will give you the discipline you need to be a better person for the future. Come home exhausted every day and you'll appreciate the smaller things a lot more.

I'm excited this kid is learning this stuff from a forum. As a kid, I didn't have a place to vent my frustrations. At least he can take something from what is said and use it to better himself. I'd like to think we don't do enough positive molding in this world and our youth is becoming a bit lost because of it. Technology is great, but there has become a bit of laziness nowadays with kids, and that needs to change. Parents seem too soft nowadays too. I know my kid will get a butt whooping if he isn't pulling his own weight in life...that's for damn sure.

Earn it!
