i just got a 3ds portal off ebay because the ps3 portal's 6 hour battery life was not acceptable, and i needed a wired solution
question though, is it only supposed to glow blue? the console portal cycled between colors, and flashes the appropriate elemental color when placing a skylander on the portal (for instance a magic skylander on the portal makes it glow bright purple for a few seconds)
however the 3ds portal only glows blue, and when placing a non-water skylander on the portal, the light turns off entirely.
does the portal only have a blue LED? and it's trying to display the other non-blue colors but failing because there's only the blue led?

Mine only glows blue, the brightness fading isn't very smooth either.
But it glows for all skylanders, not only water. Are you sure yours only lights up for water?

The 3DS portal doesn't change colours, but it should glow for everyone.

Yeah, the 3DS portal only glows blue, as others have said. It should at least be glowing/pulsing when it's scanning in a character for transfer.
Something to note about the 3DS portal: since it doesn't have a hardware off switch, once it reads in and transfers a Skylander to your game, it tends to shut itself off (I assume to save battery life). Your character's stat gains in the 3DS game only get transferred back to the character the NEXT time you scan it with the 3DS portal. Besides that, the 3DS portal seems pretty buggy at times. Something in my apartment apparently keeps hitting the IR sensor and telling it to stay on all the time. The only way I can get it to actually sync with the 3DS is if I position them precisely facing each other ahead of time and THEN turn on the portal. Otherwise I have to pull a battery out to get it to turn off and seek out the 3DS again.

i'm not actually using the 3ds portal for the 3ds, i'm using it for the console
i wonder if i could splice the mini usb adapter into a power source for the bigger portal, a few resistors to drop the output voltage from the ps3 of course. |

You can press down on the portal and hold it there for a few moments and it should shut off |
