thoughts on correcting someone's spelling on the internet [CLOSED]

so you see someone who isn't being an jerk

but they spelled something wrong or don't really write well

is it really necessary to correct them?

what do you achieve from correcting simple mistakes?

No it isn't necessary to correct them, however if you don't understand the word they wrote, you could ask them what the word means.

If the person correcting it is being a jerk about it, no.
But if they'll be all kind about it, then yes. It'll help the person out, if they are not familiar with the language. It's best not to be done too many times, otherwise the person will get irritated.

If it's minor, then it doesn't matter, everybody makes mistakes.


Then again, if instead of writing "today", you write "toddy", for example, you can see why everyone complains.

I obsess over correct grammar and spelling usually, but I only point out errors when the person is a friend that will take it jokingly.

If someone misuses the word "their" ect, then OCD kicks in and I have to correct them, although here I try hard not to smilie I don't know why; it just annoys me smilie

It really doesn't bother me or come off as rude to me. They're just correcting your spelling, it's not like they're attacking you personally or anything. smilie

I laugh when I see people correcting things like "your" and "you're", and the person had it right and the corrector 'corrects' it with the wrong one.

I only correct people if they use the wrong "your" or "you're" or "there," "they're," or "their." I'm sorry, but that bugs me to no end. I know everyone makes mistakes every now and then, but so many people use those same words incorrectly. It just... ugh...
