So I got the original Skylander back when it first came out for Xbox 360, and now I'm thinking of buying Swap Force for my Wii U. I want to save money though, so could I just buy the game and re-use my old portal? I don't want any fancy swapping or anything, in fact I will mainly be using Mega Ram Spyro.

Basically I need to know this:

Will an original 360 portal work with the Wii U for core Swap Force characters? (The ones that don't swap such as Mega Ram Spyro), or do I need the new portal even for said character?

You'll need to get a new Portal for it. The old one can't recognize the Swappable characters, and it gives an error message if you use the old one.

And there's another reason you'll need the new Portal, but I won't post it, due to spoilers.

There's no portal owner's pack for Swap Force, so unless you buy second hand you might have trouble getting the game without the portal.

There shouldn't be compatibility issues between portal and figures, but I'd be surprised if the 360 portal works on the Wii U.

Are you hoping to buy the disk second hand?

The portals don't cross from system to system in my experience. I have giants on wii U and ssa and swap force on 360
