Just curious to the SkylanderBoyandGirl, coinopTV and other youtubers creating content based off Activision's games...have you had claims against you for using their content...are you "white listed" for their games...and/or what is Activision's general stance for this? I'm asking because there appears to be a general disturbance in the force as youTube amps up their copyright violation systems.

This was kinda the case when folks were complaining about claims about "Mesmeralda's Show" song played on their video...

Not sure gaming videos are going to stick around if false claims and more stringent copyright holders decide to do this. I think it can backfire in the most delicious way for gaming companies if they don't watch it.

It is bad enough for game reviewers (I presume you are citing Angry Joe video from the Idle Chatter thread) as they only show snippets.

However, how will this affect groups who make a "living" from generating walkthroughs. Aah! How will I find all of the hidden collectibles in my games without them? My cheev score will suffer!

From what I understand this has been YouTube causing the trouble. I know a number of game companies have made statements in favor of the gamers. I'd say the fact that Activision has been featuring YouTube users like Skylanderboyandgirl in their Boomcasts and commercials means that they are cool with it. Didn't Skylanderboyandgirl get some kind of notice about using their own song in their own video? Come on, what the heck is that? I realize it's a computer making these judgements, but still. What a mess.

The skykids aren't spared from the wild copyright system Youtube has. That system did indeed block their video that had their copyrighted song in it, even had their walkthrough that had the musical intro to Mesmeralda's Show blocked recently.

The lead DEVELOPER of this game called VVVVVV had a trailer of it on his channel. Later it gets blocked for copyright by youtube. This is getting out of hand. First Mesmerelda's Show, then the skylanderkids own song, and now actual game developers and their own games!

Angry Joe is just one of many I've seen that have had problems...

Some of it is legitimate copyright infringement...the problem is:

1. bogus claims
2. the fact that works used in video means that all money now goes to the one submitting claim
3. the fact that there appears to be no context in terms of fair use etc employed by contentID

This is much less about making sure people can make a living but more about how the system is deployed, and how cumbersome it is to manage.

Specific to Skylanders...I was wondering if anyone knows what Activision's stance is for those with videos of their games. I understand that most of it is auto-generated by the contentID system but also there are some companies working overtime to make it problematic for those posting content.

The skylanderkids own song? That seems like it would have to be lobbed by Acti's own lawyers to me. Which one?

I hope those companies that experiment with crashing content see a precipitous decline in sales. This does look like the ones with the big gun lawyers will end up winning, as most of these guys don't have the time and resources to fight this stuff.

My reference was to the issue being made more exposed by Joe, not that he is the only one affected.

Truth be told - it is all BS as the automated system could have business rules around how much content was shown versus original content. (However, this would still impact walkthroughs).

Problem is, some of the people lodging complaints don't own it...and some of the claims fall under Fair Use. It's not a clear 0 or 1. There's not a great way to address thee problems yet, which was what I'm seeing.

Next stop: much fewer videos.

We got hit 5 times, but they've all cleared up, no white list, we still have to ask for help in getting the match removed.

Fair usage policy has been around a lot longer than a knee-jerk reaction to automating content checking, sorry.
