Rules Suggestion: No Junior Moderating [CLOSED]

The problem: Someone(s) take a post off-topic or are accused of taking a post off-topic. Then, someone comes in and posts about how the posts are off-topic. So, instead of a few off-topic posts, now, you have even more off-topic posts. This is made worse when the original posts weren't even really off-topic to begin with.

The ideal solution: The offended individuals should just use the "Report" feature. They don't. Again, this ends up with multiple posts that have absolutely nothing to do with the topic at hand when the original "offending" posts may or may not have really been on-topic.

My suggested solution: The offended individuals should just use the "Report" feature. If they choose to post in the topic posts that further disrupt the topic, they should be held responsible for their off-topic posts.

We already have moderators on each forum and they do a pretty good job. If it is felt that we need more moderators, then let's officially make more moderators.

That's just my opinion. smilie

Thanks. -R

The reason some mini mod is because the mods aren't always on or aren't in their section ATM.Users like aura are trying to inforce the rules to new users as they can be led astray by older users like what happened when kappa was still here. Not like dark answers to the reports half the time.It may be off topic but it stops others from more off topic posts. In my opinion I am a bit of a mini mod but is that wrong. We are trying to make the place safer for newer users by helping them not to be led astray, how is that wrong?

Reporting is the best method.

Mods might not always be on, but when we are on we can check the reports for our section. Retaliating to a trolling post, commenting on how someone is spamming or generally quoting posts that are against the rules makes the job that we do that more difficult, because it means that rather than dealing with one post/user we then have to deal with multiple posts/users.

If you see something that is breaking the rules, report and move on.

And if you don't feel that the post you reported is being handled, then PM the mod(s) of that section or Dark52 about it. Telling a mod about the post via PM can also be useful if there's some additional context to the post.

but what if someone asks for the rules, or you want to explain the ruels?

I know the reporting thing, but how about just explaining small things

and if the otther user doesn't know about pm or guestbook, and you are forced to tell it in the topic

[you got the idea]

I have nothing against reminding new users the rules (and I mean reminding them, not yelling at them), but the situation I'm against is when a user with 1000 gems makes a nonsense post and people tell them to stop spamming. They know what they're doing is wrong, so just report them and move on.

It depends on the board, though. There isn't a topic in Idle Chatter or Stuff & Nonsense that doesn't go off course at least for a little while. And people there don't really care when it happens. <.<;

Yes, that's understandable - there are different circumstances for different boards. Like how the bump/double post rule is relaxed in the fandom section.

There's nothing confusing about the suggestion. People aren't utilizing the report feature as they probably should. Instead, they go about acting like moderators themselves, and I suppose that sort of "high horse" implication doesn't sit well with a lot of people. Of course, it's hard to resist the temptation of correcting or calling off someone, so I doubt much will change. A friendly reminder is always appreciated, but a long term solution for it is difficult.

As someone who moderates on a couple of forums, let me say this:

NEVER assume that a moderator has read a message.
NEVER assume that a moderator will read a message.
NEVER assume that just because a moderator has read a message that s/he will act upon it.

A.) Mods don't read every single message and there should be ZERO expectation that they do. They're volunteer staff, they have a life and frankly, internet message boards are not their priority (and they shouldn't be yours either).

B.) I can't speak for all mods, but I'm generally of the "Let it be unless there's a complaint" type. There are obvious things (spam, porn, people going completely overboard, like threatening bodily harm, etc.) and then I have my little ticks that set me off (Junior Moderating instead of using the report button, for instance), but, for the most part, I let people post whatever and only address it when someone reports it. I feel that a community thrives better when it is self-policed. With that said, this requires that mods actually take action when something is reported that needs action taken against it. smilie

So, report. Report until your little heart is content. That's what the feature is there for.

Honestly I'm beginning to think that you have no idea of what we meant by "some mods don't even do anything". Here in the fandom section (more particular the fanart). There is issues about and I would be more than glad to just shut up and report it as spam on certain things. BUT YOU KNOW WHAT?! The mods don't even go to that section. PERIOD! As in someone has to act like how YOU call a "Junior mod". Well news flash you person, if it weren't for junior mods, we wouldn't even have mods, and the sections would be in chaotic havoc. So if I were you! I would shut your yap and eat your peas. And leave mini mods be!

Creating additional disruptive posting is RARELY a good response to disruptive posting.

Report it and move on. If nothing is done about it, then take it up with Dark so that he can consider re-evaluating the moderation team (adding more, removing some, whatever). If Dark doesn't respond (or doesn't respond in a way you like), then feel free to leave or learn to live with it.

Same thing here. I report posts I take issue with. I've taken some stuff to Dark. That's what this post is - It's me asking Dark to consider making a comment about not Junior Moderating.

As for "if it weren't for junior mods, we wouldn't even have mods" - WTH? Junior mods are not real moderators and cause more damage than they fix.

If it weren't for us mini mods complaining how there is no mods, because of Dark a lot. Then we wouldn't have any mods. How long have you not been on the forums? You're causing more damage then there needs to be by complaining of this. NOT US MINI MODS!

Also I have told Dark about the fandom mods, and guess what? There was no reply, not even a single crap was given. So about this "Dark will take care of it if you consult him" crap needs to stop because that is untrue. Like I said again Shut up and eat your truthful peas.

I can't speak for any other moderator, but without other users pointing out what other users have done, I'd have to go through every topic and thread, and that's tedious. So I'm grateful for that. Where I draw the line is when users try to tell me how to do my job, like telling me to delete a post or suspending someone. You can suggest things to improve my moderating skills, no doubt, but don't tell me how to do something that I've been successful at since January.

This is Dark's site. So many people seem to fail to understand that. Both of you (and I) can tell Dark how to run the site - but, ultimately, it's his decision and yes, if you (or I) do not follow his rules, then he can remove our ability to use the site.

If you do not like the way Dark runs the site, then I would suggest that you open your own Spyro/Skylanders forum or try one of the others that have spun out from this site. Then, you don't have to Junior Moderate - you can actually take charge, shape the site and make it what you think this site should be.

You're responding to someone that you think is breaking the rules by breaking the rules yourself. You say you want the rules to be enforced, then shouldn't you be punished every time you post something off topic and disruptive to a particular post?

1. Mini modding is not against the rules.

2. Everyone to speak, like you have the right to breathe, so don't tell them what that mini modding is wrong when it's NOT against the rules.

3. You're sort of changing the subject. But if we were to make our own forum site, we would need money to keep the site up, Permission from companies to sponsor their products and do what we have to do from them.

4. You are making a huge deal out of a little thing, I recommend closing this topic.

I personally think with the condition the site is in now, we should be thankful for mini-mods. As JCW said, he'd have to read more topics than a man should ever read in his life.

Edit: Fixed wording. Some were removed from huntership apparently.

Trix Master 100:
Not against the rules?

Take your pick:
It's off topic. It's often flaming. Looking at a few of your posts, I can see you swearing when you Junior Moderate. It's rarely done in a constructive way. There's four rules there.

But, directly to your point, I'm asking that Dark consider making Junior Moderating a direct rule violation to A) Give users a clear direction that the are to use the Report button when they find a post that breaks the rules, smilie Help clean some of the junk posts off the forums and C) Give the real, actual mods (i.e.: those who can actually enforce the rules) a clear guideline that they can use to help moderate the forums.

I shall not close this topic, but you may feel free to move on from it.

1. It's not off topic if you are enforcing rules.

2. You're calling kettle black (You're being hypocritical)

3. There's young users that don't even use the report because they don't know where it is.

4. You're not the boss of anyone.

5. Mini mod HELP mods and the community. It's not truly a bad thing.

6. If you had any brains at all you would actually consider what the heck I'm trying to get through stubborn idiotic mind.

7. There's probably different types of flamming. And mini mods are not using the bad type (as far as I know).

1) It's off-topic because it's not happening in a forum designed to discuss the rules of the forum (like, say, this one).
2) This forum (Site Help and Suggestions) is the place to discuss the rules of the forum.
3) If you're a young user that can't understand how to hit the word "report", then how the heck would you figure out how the rest of the forum works?
4) Never said I was. Again, simply asking the man who is the boss of THIS forum to consider adding the rule.
5) Self-Appointed Junior Moderators rarely provide anything helpful.
6) And now you're flaming again.
7) See above.

1. But we're allowed to enforce rules, if we weren't there would be more chaos than you would imagine.

3. You know it's funny how you say that when A LOT of the users are young users only interested in Skylanders, ask them that.
4. You sure are acting like you are.
5. We provide more information on returning banned users, harassment, and other such rule breaking things to mods than you are seeing or visiting the site.
6. That maybe me flaming again, but you're continuing the fire to burn.

1.) Please point me to where Dark gives you permission to enforce HIS rules on HIS forum?
3.) If they're smart enough to figure out how to use the forum, they're smart enough to use the "Report" function.
4.) How so? I made a topic (clearly marked as a suggestion) asking Dark to consider something. It's not like I made an entire "rules" thread as if I were in charge or something.
5.) If you need to alert a mod about someone you suspect to be a previously banned user, we have a PM function. It's not good form to accuse someone of something publicly based on a whim and if you have inside information, it makes more sense to share that with a mod in private, as not to tip the previously banned individual. Harassment can be reported with the "Report" function. It's one of the options. So are a ton of other "rule breaking things." All this can be done without adding ADDITIONAL off-topic posts.
6.) So, you're openly admitting to flaming, which is against the rules. After complaining about how you want more active mods to enforce the rules more. Interesting.

Roughly one month ago, Dark responded to me directly in a previous post on this very forum.

If he doesn't respond to someone, maybe it has more to do with the tone presented to him than anything else.

Regardless, as I've said before, if you don't like the way Dark runs the forums, either build a bridge and get over it or start your own forum. "It's free and takes less than 30 seconds." http://www.proboards.com/

Like it or not, Dark owns these forums. I suppose, if you really wanted, you could offer to buy them from him. Then, you could do all the moderating you wanted.

Whadda say Dark, how much you want to sell DarkSpyro for? smilie

1. By letting us type.
3. They report is small they miss it, ALSO are you calling them dumb? Are you implying that?
4. You're basically yelling at us about it too since it is public.
5. We are talking about the "Junior mods" in this topic so how can it be off topic? Also yeah it would be wise to pm, but we also get people confused on the situation so get evidence before we yell it out to the public (we're that dumb you know).
6. And you're offending a lot of good people on the site by asking this topic if no mini modding should be a rule. That's putting a ban on gay marriages, people will argue on it.

Wow, you're kinda a prick.
EDIT: Would also like to note that suggestions go into the Forum Suggestions topic.

1.) If "letting you type" is giving you permission, then I suppose Dark is giving everyone permission to do whatever they want?
3.) It's roughly the same exact size as the "Reply" and "Create New Topic" links.
4.) I'm not yelling at anyone. If that were the case, I'd go around to all the threads where people try to Junior Moderate and yell at them for Junior Moderating. But that would be silly, as it'd just throw the topics off topic even more.
5.) What?
6.) This is NOTHING like banning same-sex marriage. How old are you, seriously? The two are in no way comparable...

1. In a way yeah. But there are limits. Just don't harass and such and I guess it's all good. (Note in SnN very little is on topic you know).
3. Do you see anyone pay attention to the edit button? Because it's sort of like that situation.
4. Well it is a public topic after all people can still see it and butt it.
5. Before we yell out "Banned user" on a user we get evidence and show it to mods and Dark.
6. In a way it is. Like how we are arguing, you say "mini modding should banned!' like how some people say "Gay sex should be banned!", while here I say "Mini modding should be allowed" like how people say "Gay marriage should be allowed.". It's that sort of speak I was talking about. It's taking away part of a right which is speech. We have the right to talk/type as much as people of any sex have the right to marry. Also I'm telling you my age. Kind of a off topic question of no importance.

1.) So, there are limits. Good that you recognize that. Now, if Dark wants you to moderate his forums, could he not just make you a moderator?
3.) I see several people use the edit button, yes.
4.) I made it a public topic because I didn't feel this was something that I should just PM. I welcomed the idea to the input of others (which is also why I didn't specifically call Dark out in the subject, like the last topic I made here). If no one likes this idea, then it could just go away into the sunset. Although, it would appear, some folks are onboard.
5.) In private? So why bother going public with it? Just let them handle it and do their jobs.
6.) No. It isn't. In any way. And it's demeaning to those who have been oppressed and have fought hard for same-sex marriage for you to even suggest it.
6a.) I don't care about your age. It was a rhetorical question. Age doesn't equal acumen, so your actual age isn't of importance - it's your ability to have a logical, respectful, reasonable conversation. That goes out the window when you say things like "saying people shouldn't junior moderate is like banning same-sex marriage."

1. He picked mods out of a hat. And I will assure you that there's nothing wrong with good users that are not mods, helping out with the enforcing.
3. No not that I meant double posting issue >.>
4. Well yeah, but they have the right to speak out their opinion on it too.
5. But we are apart of this community and would like to keep it safe. We go public with it because it's not anything scary like hackery and aliens. This is not area 51.
6. Well to some rhetorical can mean sarcasm which is rather rude you know. But I just was using similes are you saying using English skills to compare and contrast from other situations is rude? Because I'll assure you that it helps get the point across.
