I plan buying only the game, but I need to know if you can play it with the old portal.

How were you planning on buying the game - you can't buy it without the new portal?

For what it's worth, it's totally worth it - even if you just play using your current figures?

The whole pack is too expensive for me, so I found someone who sells only the disc. But I wanted to check if you can play it without the new portal, first. Since you can't, I have no other option, but to pass on this game.

For those of you who has a special edition portal that is translucent around the rims that came along with the glow-in-the-dark Cynder figure, I suggest keeping it. Also, one question. Is the new portal backwards compatible with the first and second Skylanders games, not just the third one?

Yes it is. When I was getting money for my new S2 and S3 figures for Swap Force, I instead put them into Giants to use the Money Cheat there. I didn't want to exchange portals, so I gone ahead and used the new portal in Giants, and there was no difference. So yes, it is backwards compatible.

Ah - that sucks, dude. And whomever is selling it without a portal sucks, since whomever buys it can't use it.

Just keep looking...

As I got the regular pack and the Dark pack, I had a spare portal/copy of the game. I sold it on the weekend for $30 (given that in Oz the standard pack price is $70) - a bargain for someone with figurines from a prior game (i.e. can play now and can get some Swap Force ones at their leisure).

Really, the starter pack is great value. Try and save up as it will be a lot less trouble in the long run.
