My theory about variant figures is that if that variant has an official artwork, take Quickdraw Rattle Shake or Jade Fire Kraken for example, Then that variant will be an in-game variant too. The artwork on the box of the Glitter Hot Head didn't match the figure's silvery colour, so that was not an in-game variant. Also take Pumpkin Eye-Brawl for example. The artwork on his box was of the normal counterpart, so disappointed customers should have been aware that he wasn't an in-game variant.

I think the only exception for this would be the fritolay (pumpkin?) Fright Rider. He has his own unique art but no one has found him in the game so far.
