Uhm, I don't remember if Gamestop does Exchanges, but you CAN always go to Target, say you bought it there, and get it exchanged for the WiiU version...

Gamestop won't without a receipt. Walmart would probably be you or option.

Exchanging it elsewhere than where it was purchased is considered return fraud and is illegal.

Granted, most places won't really care, but it's been known to happen.

Pretty much the only place that doesn't require a receipt anymore is Walmart.

Ask him where he purchased it. If it was Target, they can look up the receipt based off the details of the transaction. If it was Walmart, they can do the same, but they don't really require the receipt.

Is it possible he stole the item from the store and that's why he can't give you the receipt? smilie

It can pretty easily narrowed down to where they got it. Did the friend pay cash? If he used debit, credit or checking Target can look up payment info to find the transaction. Then you got PUR cards at Gamestop.....like with all these previous suggestion you are bound to find out where it came from. Even without a receipt how does someone forget where they bought something? Even with you initially speaking of doing an exchange this whole thing is starting to sound fishy.

Go to Walmart, get the money back for the game. Then go to the Electronics department, then buy the version you want. Walk out. Get in your car. Start your car. Drive home. Go inside your house. Place the disc in the wii. Turn on the wii. Get a controller and a nunchuck. Get your portal and figures. Plug the portal in. Play until you cant stay awake. Sleep. Wake up. Play some more.

Make sence?

Walmart would know it's not from there as Walmart versions have "Only at Walmart" stickers on them that were printed with the boxart and could easily deny him.

Ooooohhhh Shelly9871, I am not sure that was copacetic. The free LC Hex figure was only available to those who pre-ordered and picked up their games. You clearly returned the one that you bought through pre-order and then purchased a completely new game. With that being said I am not sure the LC Hex was still rightfully yours.

Well.. A) I returned one of the 6 starters I got-- to the manager. B.) on release day the manager asked me if I needed any extras to give to my son's friends. C) I honestly didn't even think about it and I'll call and double check in the morning.
But Slayer---good question---I'll check tomorrow and post response for anybody who is interested.

This place never ceases to amaze me. The more I think about it....I didn't return....I exchanged game systems for the exact same starter pack. I wouldn't think that, exchanging systems would require returning the pre order bonus. Now...if I returned it.. then yes. But as I said ill check with the manager tomorrow and remind him that I did get a lc hex for the starter I exchanged today...and ill see if he would like me to return it. I'll post response here.
Gooch, I'm surprised by your response. Was that a sincere concern that I should have returned lc hex?

Sponge based on these posts and past info. It depends on the store and e mployee. Clearly people return gifta without receipts all the time. You wpuls likely have trouble getting cash....but to do an even exchange or get store credit. ..I can't imagine having much of a problem.

dont open it and take it back to walmart and blame the mix up on the guy that works in the video section, you asked for wii he gave you wii-u,the reason you don't have a receipt is your mom recycles and she takes all the plastic bags and dumps them where ever she stops that will take them target some walmarts ect..simple mistake.

Just exchange it out for the Wii Version... Trust me, its not that big of a deal. Ask your friend where they got it, then go to that location and say they got you the wrong one, and all you want is to just get the Wii version because you don't have a WiiU. It really isn't that hard. You are over-complicating things, my friend.

If it was bought legit and is in the system they will let you exchange it, either by letting you run in the back and get one and bring it up front OR they will give you a gift card for the amount and you can walk over to electronics and buy the thing again. Try to do the first as it the easier route, if you have to do the 2nd make sure it totals over 74.99 otherwise your friend bought it for less (maybe used chips coupon or got lc hex with it).

Just tie your friend up in a chair and use all the latest torture techniques until his brain reboots and starts functioning again - seriously, how hard can it be to remember where he bought the thing? The LONGEST it's been is 8 days, is your friend 80 years old??? Who can't remember where they spent $75 on one item in the last week?

And NO! Don't lie. The truth is believable and understandable and hardly unique. Trying to lie about losing the receipt means you could get caught in the lie, and people don't like being lied to, they'll be less inclined to help you out. And after all, how hard is it to mix up Wii and WiiU, especially when it's not your system? Completely understandable.

Worst case scenario, go to Walmart. Even if it wasn't from there, you're trading a $75 product for a $75 product (they ARE the same price, right?), they wouldn't be suffering at all. Plus at this point the WiiU version is probably more in demand, so it's more valuable to them anyway.

Shelly, I think dino-bang is panicking because UncleBob mentioned that it might be possible his friend stole the item, thats why he can't provide a receipt.

Seriously, foul move, UB. He's just a kid who can't see when you're pulling his leg, clearly.

I've gotten plenty of gifts as a kid from friends who had no idea where they got the item because guess what? They didn't buy it. Their parents did while they were at school. Does that mean that all my childhood toys are stolen goods? No, it doesn't.

Maybe instead of asking your friend, call their parents up. If they gave you a 75 buck item for whatever reason, I'm sure your mom has his mom's number. Ask them where they got the item, then follow my instructions from Post #40. Again! Not that big of a deal.

Edit: I read through the thread again, and I can see where everyone is saying stuff sounds fishy.. Just going to continue to play devil's advocate here as I am on the fence about this situation and would rather not pick a side now.

IF the item is stolen, then, my friend, you are in possession of stolen goods, and exchanging it should be the last thing on your mind. ;) Might want to turn it in if that's the case.

That is what I was thinking. The OP sounded like they were making a legitimate question which is why most of us answered with legitimate answers. The more information that came in, the less legitimate it sounded unfortunately. I am sure that you don't need to find the answer to your question on here if what you are trying to do is illegal. You can figure it out for yourself what avenues you can take to get what you want provided you don't mind lying or simply being untruthful.

Ah, it hadn't occurred to me that your friend's parents might have done the actual purchase, LOL! Of course, given the age of the target audience, that's the most likely. Though I would think he would have said "I don't know where it came from, my parents bought it". It should be easy enough to tell your friend that he has to tell his parents that this is the wrong one and you'd like to exchange it for the right one, that's all. Maybe give it back so they could arrange it without you, to keep it feeling like a gift.

Too many unknowns here. It is unusual that a kid would give another kid a $75 video game for their birthday. $15-20 tops seem pretty standard here. Of course, that varies on wealth and other factors and areas so that is on unknown.

Secondly, he indicated it *might* be stolen. That sounds like he also thinks it might be a bit above a reasonable priced gift.

Third if it is stolen, you run into many issues here. You don't know where it is from, so returning it to a store you did not buy it at is technically return fraud. Sure as some mentioned, it will probably be no problem to swap it, but it is dishonest (not something we should be teaching kids). Secondly, and more importantly, what if the store he does that at is aware they had a copy of it stolen. Video games are locked up and do not tend to walk out without it being known. Let's say he returns it to the store it was stolen from and they know they lost a WiiU copy. Could cause trouble.

Best way to handle it is honesty. Ask your friend directly for the receipt. If he claims he "lost" it, ask him if he will accompany you to the store where he bought it to exchange it. His response will likely tell you whether he stole it or not - I doubt he will want to go back in the store with it if so.

If it is unopened and you go to Walmart and say it was a gift and that the gifter accidentally got you the Wii U version, they should let you exchange it without much questioning. This is your best bet. Walmart doesn't care what store it came from, tell them you have no idea what store, just that he got it from Walmart.
