This is more of an odd question if anything, but while the new portal is needed for swap force and so on, the design of the thing is quite ugly and I have considered seeing if I could transfer the guts from it to my GITD portal. Has anyone done any checking into this thus far? I can at least attest that the casing itself doesn't appear to come apart as easily it seems...

It wouldnt be that hard, the biggest thing is like you say getting it apart without tearing it up. I took
apart a wireless portal from the earlier games and made it a wired USB portal. The other problem you may run into is if its built like the older portals on the inside there is a copper wire ring. Judging by the width of the new portal most likely the ring inside the new portal is wider. Therefore it may not fit inside the old portal. But you most likely can bend it to fit though and it should not hurt it. |

The new portal is awesome everyone fits not like the old portal you had to adjust the skylanders like a puzzle to get them to fit.

Madara Uchiha> Did you just solder a USB cable onto the spare pins inside? Was anything else required?
I saw those pins and was going to try testing that but hadn't got around to it. Great way to save a portal with missing receiver! |

Yes i just snipped off the wires that connected to the battery terminal, then took a USB and stripped it back, then soldered them in. I got tired of using the wireless portal that was crying for batteries every couple of days. |

Here is something I have tried:
I have 2 SF portals (Dark & Regular) and have one plugged in and the other sitting next to it not plugged in. The portal that is not plugged in will work for the Core/S1/S2/S3/LC but not for the Swap or Giants. It makes it easier to swap characters without knocking the other figure off. |

Well managed to pull this off mostly without a hitch. Apparently the copper ring is *smaller* in this portal and not designed to go up higher (obviously, so it takes a bit of work to fit it in and tweaking so the ligh shines in the right spot), but it was a success!
For those of you wanting to give it a go, it's held together by clips...so expect to more than likely break some tabs. The circuit board itself is at least held on by a screw so no risk of damage there. |

The Sf portal is also able to read stuff under it,so making a vertical portal might also be an option like a star gate type of thing.

I wonder if the giant portals on the in-store displays can be used on a home system - and, if not, if one could be rigged up to work.

Yes...and yes. Thats if you could get one.
All of them in my area don't work. Just went back to target the other day and it was working...the guy told me they had the vendor come in an fix it a few days ago. So i went to my other local stores an told them you need to call your vendor...because none of the new displays work, then told them about Target getting theres fixed. They told me thank you we will call him an get in fixed. |
