I think the designs are more miss than hit this time around, no question about it, but we have literally DOUBLE the number of new characters than from Giants, and it appears the design of the game itself is a step forward; my content question is safely answered...so definitely a BUY from me, although I'll be cutting back from getting all to just getting what I like and what's new.
I mean, I can just get the STARTER pack and have 100 landers at my disposal.

Why does it seem like the characters of the game have a similiar torso shape or design? I do have to agree though, some of the newlanders look uglier than a badly made Mii on the Wii.

If you don't like the new characters, don't buy them. For some reason most people just wanna buy 'em all. I suppose I must have become immune to that mentality after playing way too much pokemon back in the day.
Me? I'll hopefully buy the Darkstarter, maybe one triple pack, maybe one or two Swapper/double packs, and be done with it.

Popthorn, Smoulderdash, and Hoot Loop are my faves design wise, but don't forget that it's the gameplay of the new characters that makes them desirable.

...I really don't like them this time around either. They've gone from a cast of cool Mythical Creatures to SOME mythical creatures plus a bunch of anthro and human characters who are still kind of cool, to a bunch of anthropomorphic animals, humanoids and other things that all look like Ben 10 wannabes. And a lot of them are really ugly. I do still like Hoot Loop and Riptide to an extent, but that's about it.
Wow, MugoUrth, you just made me understand why I don't like that much the new characters. Not all of them, but still.
SSA had dragons, a phoenix, unicorns, ogres, elfs, elemental monsters, golems, hybrids, living plants, goblins, a troll and generally a lot of other fictional cgharacters, only inspired by animals.
SG had some animals too, like Hot Dog, but he was made of lava, after all.
SSF has normal animals, with powers, of course, but just normal Earth animals dressed as humans (except some like Pop Thorn, Slobber Tooth, ecc...), but most of the Swappers are just normal animals with dresses on them.
Theyr gameplay looks awesome, but I would like to see more Mythical or brand new creatures, in the future.

You're probably not the only one feeling that way, but you're definitely in the minority.
Honestly, with no offense intended specifically for you, JoeRox, it's my opinion that most of the people who are "complaining" about the release of SwapForce and its characters are really just trying to find a way to convince themselves to stop spending money on the franchise. It's an addiction. And like most addictions, the addicts try to find a way to rationalize blaming the addicting product rather than blaming themselves.
Sorry if that's too deep on the psychological side for some of the readers here, but I strongly believe it has merit.
Ultimately, if you want to stop buying Skylanders, then just stop. No one is forcing you to buy them, and you don't need an excuse to stop buying them. Just stop if that's what you want.
On the flipside, if you really don't want to stop, then stop trying to find an "out", and instead just enjoy it and have fun.

Not so. If the game is good, I'd still buy it. I just don't like the character designs. Even then, I'd still buy them if I had Swap Force.
If anything I want it because it continues the storyline. If I don't like a certain character who says I have to play it? I may not care about swapping around pieces but then I wont know until I play the game. I enjoy the collecting and anxiously waiting news on next figures whether I find them or not. So not buying the game would drive me crazy because I feel like I would be missing out. I even preordered the new jack skeleton figure for Infinity. I don't even have the game but in case I want to play it in the future I would have the figure I want. No one has to buy swap force but don't feel bad because you fell off the fad. It happens. Maybe you'll get interested in the next game if there is one. No one said we had to be hardcore about it. Some of us just choose to.

Ditto. I'm not impressed by many of the new Swaplanders, but the last thing I want to do is find an excuse not to buy more.
Boy, I’m glad we got another topic on this subject… it would have been a bummer if the original poster had just added to an existing conversation!
Sarcasm aside, I think that (like the last two generations) the design is hit and miss. Some of the new ones (like Starstrike, Roller Brawl and Stink Bomb) really appeal to me, while several others (Countdown) look absolutely awful. Most are somewhere in between and are simply ‘okay’.
But that has always been the case. In the first game Drill Sargent, Whamshell, Lightning Rod and Boomer all look pretty damn terrible; and a great number (Erupter, Stump Smash) look painfully generic.
Giants did better, but Crusher, Shroomboom and Hotdog are all frighteningly generic and I always hated the look of Jet-Vac.
Skylanders has always been hit and miss… but you know what the great thing about Skylanders is? You only need a small number of characters – so pick eight you can stand, and away you go!
I was actually talking about this in the Infinity Thread – in Skylanders the core experience is there for you regardless of what additional figure you buy. With just the core set, you will see most of the game and you’ll miss out on very little. And if you do want it all, you can get it with a minimal number of additional purchases. Get one of each type and off you go.
Conversely, if you want to get to the core experience of Infinity, you do need all the figures – like, all the figures and all of the blind-buy disks… otherwise you’ll be forever locked out of some core content.
So do what you want – Play SSF with all your old crew, or buy up all the new figures. Either way you’ll get to experience the vast majority of the game.

That pretty much sums it up. Bahamut, I've been trying to rationalize the game purchase because of content---now that it seems safe to assume the size will be at least as good as the previous games I'm good. I'm still teetering on my figure purchase intent as I readily admit it is addicting and I need to put railers on this time or I'll clearly throw myself off a cliff buying them all lol.
I'm in essence having a conversation with my psyche on a public forum...so for that I apologize
