Well, I'm excited for Swap Force as much as the next guy, but as said in the title of the topic, I'm debating if I should settle with the Normal Starter Pack or pay an extra $25 for the Dark Starter Pack. Let me explain what figures I want and what figures I don't:
Dark Blast Zone: Do want. Looks cooler than plain 'ol vanilla Blast Zone.
Dark Wash Buckler: Don't mind. Same reason as wanting Dark Blast Zone.
Dark Ninja Stealth Elf: Don't want. Sister doesn't really like regular , so why bother having the dark?
Dark Mega Ram Spyro: Don't want. I got the S1 from SSA 3DS, so why bother? Plus the horns are totally whack.
Dark Slobber Tooth: Don't want. I already have S2 filling the role of core Earth-element, and I don't really care for the character, even in vanilla form.
Here's some possible plans for the starter pack that I get:
A. I get the Vanilla starter pack and find a loose Dark Blast Zone and possibly Wash Buckler at a later date. (Probably a cheaper route in the long run.)
B. I get the Dark starter pack, take out only Dark Blast Zone and Wash Buckler, and leave the rest in the box or sell them off. (Probably more convenient, but a tad more expensive, and I might have to have extra figures laying around if I don't sell them/put the box with the extra characters inside into storage. Before you ask, yes, we have a storage place that isn't too awfully far away from our place.)
I just need some help deciding on what I should get.
Update: I forgot to state this when I initially posted, but here it is: I'm not gonna get Swap Force on day one. I'm possibly going to get it with my Wii U, an external HDD for it, an extra nunchuk, and some other Wii/ Wii U games for xmas. Do you think the dark starter pack will be available long enough for me to get it on xmas? Or would I just be better off getting the vanilla starter pack and find the Dark Blast Zone and Wash Buckler later on?

I hope to get the Darkstarter, and depending on his powers keep or trade (or swindle a cousin into trading me his Dino-Rang) Dark Slobbertooth.
Dark NSE looks sweet, though I have her S1. Swappers look fine. Don't have Dark Spyro from the 3DSSSA, so I wouldn't mind him. His horns are kinda big, but I like them. $25 is a bit much for two more cores (I'd rather use the money to help me get more Swaps, to unlock more in-game), but it could be considered $1 more per figure, and they are all presumably stronger than their light counterparts. Some sources say they'll have unique attacks, if so, that ups their value. Also, I have a premonition they'll become quite popular on the second hand market, even if singles are released.

I'm stuck as well. I'm figuring the dark edition will never drop in price since gamestop barely does it. I get more figures and elements in the beginning. But then I miss out on the regular ones. I may get the dark and wait to get the normal at a lower price on amazon. But my question is, will I still be able to get the lc hex with the dark edition? People have been posting one way or another. I guess the best I can do is wait until I can get to a gamestop, enquire and then make my decision.

After getting burned with all of the variant stuff in Giants, I'm swearing off this stuff. Original characters need only apply for me. Nothing like spending $100 extra dollars just for a few COPIES of characters I'm getting. I'll pass.

I've collected every variant and have purchased all Skylanders up until this point. This Starter pack variant nonsense has pushed me over the edge. I no longer plan to collect them all this time for SSF, it's just gotten too rid ridiculous. If I want to get both version of Wash Buckler and Ninja Stealth elf I'd have to buy two different starter packs, not going to do it.
It's quite liberating to know going into SSF that I won't have to track down every version, I'll just be buying characters that look cool. Thanks Activision for breaking my habit! I would think that crap like this would push mental collectors like GM78 over the edge, but GM78's addiction is too deep for that to happen.

If you are getting those two eventually, you should get them now and sell the unwanted ones, they should make up the $25 price difference.
It's probably going to get more expensive to get the loose figures later unless they release them in single packs. Among the dark variants, I think Blast Zone looks the best and most likely will sell for more as loose figure, e.g. more than $25 you'll pay extra now. Or just get the vanilla starter and forget about those dark variants |

If you think you'll one day want them, go dark now. The normal one will be around for the next year whenever you want to pick it up.

I don't think 25$ more worth the 2 normal skylanders. I will surely take the standard one plus slobber tooth is prettier in green instead of silver

I agree but I'm just going with marketplace psychology here. Otherwise, those ugly chase variants wouldn't sell as much as they are now. |

Some articles have implied that it's a pre-order thing, meaning it might not last long enough for one to get it after launch, but no confirmation. I'll probably pre-order, to be safe.

Kindred spirit, you and I. And GM78 has sworn off of chase variants, so I sense some more breaking of the portal masters this time around. I have a sense Activision will learn their diminishing returns equation this time around. Not hating on Skylanders either guys. I just wish Acti could be a bit more pragmatic.

I really kinda want the Dark starter pack, mainly because of missing out on Dark Spyro. But I much prefer the dark Blast Zone and Wash Buckler, Stealth elf is better in normal and as for Slobber tooth..meh either way really.
I hopefully will be getting the dark pack as I haven't preordered either yet but I think they could have perhaps chosen some better Skylanders and newlanders for the dark variants.

I'm going to see if I can either exchange my previous pre-order for the original starter pack, or at least cancel it, so I can get the Dark starter.
I'm no avid collector, but dude....5 figures in one box?! And you get two core figs that may not be available in the launch wave?! You can't really beat that. Plus, if you're just getting into Skylanders, and you're not planning to get anymore figs, you get almost half of the elements, in one fell swoop. You would just have to get a Tech, Air, and a Undead. Pretty nifty, imo

At the Gamestop I went to, they let me do that, but I had to put $25 down (which counts towards the purchase) on the Dark starter pack to preorder it. I guess they didn't want people scalping preorders.

Personally, I'd get the normal one. I dunno about you, but I'd rather have the normal, accurately colored Skylanders than the dark variants. Dark Spyro from the first game was one thing (and looked pretty cool) but coloring a bunch of other characters like that for no reason is another. Do what you want, but I'd rather have the normal ones. If you get the dark ones, you may not be able to get the normal versions.

It's good that you don't feel the pressure to collect every last figure, but I fail to see how the Dark Starter Pack is any worse than the guff that went on with giants. At least this puts a bunch of variants in one pack, rather than making you chase down each one. In fact, they are sort of doing us a kindness this round. You can get the stater, the dark starter and the DS starter, and you end up with 11 different figures. Last time to get Gnarly & Punch you'd end up with multiple Cynders, Jet-vacs and Tree-rexs. |

I'm just going with the normal starter pack. I don't really like any of the design choices with the variants to make it a purchase for me. Actually I really hate the Dark Washbuckler and Slobbertooth, and the Dark Blast Zone and Stealth elf are hardly different.
I can see how completionists would love this, but I like the normal designs so much better. |

My ideas:
D Blast Zone: Horrible, just horrible. D Wash Buckler: A ton better than normal, but still bad. D Slobber Tooth: Same as Wash Buckler. D Ninja Stealth Elf: Hardly Different. D Mega Ram Spyro: Seems like a repeat. I want normal, because it's cheaper. |
