Maybe as a metaphor for pollution but not the actual story. That's why this doesn't work.

The machines have become so intelligent, they're able to almost recreate human-like tendencies. The only problem is that humans seem to provide a certain energy that helps the machine's thrive and "live" that energy being in Monsters Inc. Scream energy and later laughing energy.
