Is the disc scratched at all? If so, then get a cotton ball and gently massage rubbing alcohol on the black side, and let it air dry. That will guide the lasers across the scratches.

Yeah sounds like the disk is scratched. You can do what ThroneOfMalefor said, or you can take it to locally owned used video game stores or video rental stores (yes those still exist).

Or do what JCW555 said... If they ask you if you want to resurface the disc, say NO! If the scratches were that bad, the game would've been unplayable to begin with. Good luck!
