I know a lot of people on Skylanders usually just put hats on a someone for fashion more than stats. But what image were you going for by putting on a certain hat? Is the Skylander a magician of haberdasher with their hat? Is there a little backstory on why they have? Would imagine them feeling empowered or more confident while wearing it? Just curious here.

I'm glad a thread like this was made, because I often think about the hats for my characters in this way.

I'll take my Stealth Elf for an example: Back when I had her on the Pook Blade Saint path I went for a Pirate bucaneer feel by giving her the Admiral hat. Not only do its colours match Stealth Elf like she was meant for it, but the hat's width combined with the floating blades that follow her around from the Pook Blade Saint path really gave her an awesome, intimidating presence on the battlefield.

Just yesterday I re-levelled her down the Forets Ninja path: Now she's wearing a lowly Berret that makes her look like a rogue dealer, to show that she's now taking a shadier route in life.

My TriggerHappy has a cowboy hat on... gunslinger. :U

My has a fez on because he's a old, wise, tree-thing.

My Stump Smash has a top hat... Because his full title is Lord Stumpington of Woodland.

Gil Grunt+Cooking Pot Hat=Epic

Gil Grunt with the cooking pot is epic. I did the same thing as soon as I got the cooking pot and haven't looked back. I have cowboy hat on Trigger Happy as it just fits. I have halo on Stealth Elf as the rest didn't look right. Double Trouble wears of course the tiki hat. Dino Rang wears the Roman warrior mohawk. Sunburn has the rocket hair. Cynder wears the beret cause she is cool and laid back. Slam Bam has the santa hat for obvious reasons and Zook wears the jester hat. This is just to name a few. I go with whatever hat makes sense and looks the best for the character. The stats are meaningless to me.

Well, let me see...I currently have my Terrafin wielding a fez because he looks like the type of guy who would sit down in a bathrobe, a fez, and a pipe to read the news.

My Ghost Roaster wears the chef hat due to his time in the living world as a chef. It's a nice little callback to his life.

My Spyro wears the Generals hat as I consider him the leader. My Flameslinger wears the Rocket Hat due to his blinding, rocket-like speed. Warnado wears the bone hat just because it fits with his overall aesthetic. Zap wears the top hat because he's just classy like that (and nicknamed after the most classy mad Scientist, Nikola Tesla.), and finally, my camo wears the Flower Pot, just to give him an element of silliness.

sonic boom has the fancy has cause shes a mother and that looks like a old lady mom hat.
drill sergeant has bunny ears, just because it looks great on him.
ghost roaster has the spiked hat cause hes a skull and that hat just looks like it fits.
flameslinger has the pirate hat, cause it looks just right on him
drobot gets the winged hat. cause hes fast, that adds to speed. and it also is metal and goes well with the drobot dragon armor.
Camo has the combat hat cause its green and goes well with him.
double trouble has wizard hat cause he looks wizardy.
gill grunt with the pan hat is epic.
hex looks like the kind of chick to wear the beret so thats what she has.
prism break has the trojan helmet, cause i think its cool with his rock body
spryo has the moose hat cause of his charge attack, a charging moose dragon. thats awesome.
thats all i can remember.

My lil bro's Wrecking Ball is wearing a soldier hat. He's our little army man.
The story is:
While venturing through the troll lands, Wrecking Ball came acrossed an abandoned hat. He decided to name it Lucky and he talks to it.

My Spyro is wearing the Trojan mohawk hat: It gives him the feel of a crazy crusader who charges head-first in to battle, which Spyro does.

My Prism Break for a while was wearing the Miner's helmet: He presumabley found one whilst chipping through the rocks in the underground caves where he came from. (Nowadays he wears a little green soldier hat just because it looks nice.)

My Trigger Happy is wearing a soldier hat: He now has a soldier vibe in general because of the guns he wields and all the bombs he throws. The hat actually suits him pretty well appearance-wise, too.

The rest of my characters just wear hats because they look cool, or wear the Halo because it's a nice default hat for characters to have when other hats don't suit them:
Sonic Boom - Halo
Zap - Beret
Cynder - Halo, though she looks pretty awesome in the Unicorn hat.
Gill Grunt - Halo <3
Ignitor - Halo
Voodood - Trojan hat. It looks really awesome on him!
Eruptor - Halo. One of the only hats Eruptor can wear in my opinion, because most hats seem to "float" a distance above his head too much for my liking.

Hex:Wizard hat as she is a which.
Ghost Roaster:He wears the jester hat because he laughs when he does his skull dash

Double-Trouble with the Pirate hat! Looks like freaking Jack Sparrow!!

Gill Grunt+Tropical Turban=Aloha Gill, aloha Gill...
Drill Sergeant+Unicorn Hat=Tricorn Sergeant
Stealth Elf also looks great with the Trojan Helmet on...looks like a warrior from a historic civilization.
And let's not forget +Viking Hat...it's both a classic and only makes him resemble a Viking god even more.
Trigger Happy+cowboy Hat=Sheriff Triggs.
Chop Chop+Trojan Helmet="General Death", the nick I gave him.
Whirlwind+Rocker Hat=Great repression's bane, considering her turbulent(no pun intended) past.

Spyro- Wizard Hat: Spyro's the leader. His name's in the title, so he's the self-proclaimed leader of the Skylanders? Right? Right. At least, he thinks so. He wears this hat to show off his prowess in the Magic element, as well as over everyone else. He thinks everyone else's hat is silly except his

Trigger Happy- Sheriff Hat: It was love at first sight. He found it rolling in the wind like a tumbleweed and hasn't taken it off since. His head probably the shape of it by now...

Gill Grunt- Napoleon Hat: Gill was never really "all there", and this hat speaks the truth. It was mistaken by Gill as a Pirate Hat, so he wears it proudly and wildly, not bothering to differentiate between friend and foe

Cynder- Rocker Hair: Cynder's always had a thing for mohawks, but being a dragon, she has no hair and can't have one. But that didn't stop her from wearing the one she had from Halloween last year

Wrecking Ball- Birthday Cake Hat: There was supposed to be cake at the new Skylanders' Initiation next week, but somebody decided to try and pull it under the table, resulting in a delicious, makeshift hat for its hungry wearer

Bash- Viking Hat: Bash never felt up to standards with the other dragons until he donned his brand new Triceratops Guard Honor armor. His spirits lifted, he went to go clobber some enemies, accidentally causing a rock slide. Not one pebble made him flinch as he noticed an old, dusty hat admit the stones. He's been the happiest dragon in Skylands since

Sunburn- Royal Crown: Being so rare and valuable was hard for Sunburn before he joined the Skylanders. After teaming up with them and gaining security, he became complacent about his rarity, flaunting his beauty when he used to hide it. Getting a crown from his brethren on Dragon's Peak as an honorary member didn't help smolder his ego

Whirlwind- Fancy Hat: Like Sunburn, Whirlwind shunned her beauty and unique ability, but due to naysayers. Becoming a Skylander made expectations of herself do a 360, now refined and classy. Sunburn wanted someone else to look good with, so he gave her the hat. Looking good is lots of fun

Zap- Pan Hat: Everyone else looked so cool with their hats, Zap wanted in, too! He dove to the bottom of the ocean to find one amongst some junk and trash carelessly thrown in. Soon, he found an old pot that fit just right. No one's had the heart to tell him it's not really a hat. He thinks it's a pan, though

Lightning Rod- Trojan Hat: Lightning Rod was a very celebrated Storm Giant before he left his empire. One of his going-away presents was a Storm Giant guard's hat, a reminder of his great strength and steadfastness he would be lending to the lucky Skylanders

Warnado- Winged Hat: Warnado was a family pet of sorts to Lightning Rod, (think Hercules and Pegasus from the Disney movie) sporting his rare treasure as proof. Imagine their surprise when both found out the other joined the Skylanders. Imagine the Skylanders surprise when a game of Frisbee created category 4 storms

Camo- Tropical Turban: Camo was pretty indifferent when it came to hats until he saw Cali wearing a hat with fruit during a heated game of "truth or dare". Amazing! Cali happily gave it gave to him afterwards and, at the expense of looking silly, Camo wears it everywhere. Besides, what's so funny about having your daily dosage of Vitamin C on your head?

Ignitor- General's Hat: Having your head on fire is never good for wearing hats. Igintor didn't bother trying. His friends wanted him to feel included in the hat department, so they pooled together and bought a fireproof hat from General Robot. Ignitor now burns brightly with gratitude on all of his foes

Prism Break- Miner Hat: Prism Break would never tell anyone outside his pals, but ever since some Mabus unearthed him from his rock tomb, he's secretly been claustrophobic. As excepted, this hinders his abilities in tight or enclosed spaces, to the dismay of the other Skylanders. Hearing this through the grapevine, the captain of the very miner Mabus who found Prism Break offered his mining hat. Now, when Prism Break attacks with his crystals, the light from the hat bounces off them and creates beautiful emerald sparkles that fills his enemies with dread

As you all know, Drobot had a bit of a complicated past with his peers.As you all also know, he used his intelligence and gained a place in the Skylanders for the way he did so.What you might not know is that he sometimes dons a piece of Spy Gear(it's not like he needs the rest).This enhances his robotic vision, as well as acting like a scanner of sorts.He spies merely for fun, though he secretly wishes to be hired for espionage, since he deems himself crafty enough to do so.But when he does spy on people, the only thought that crosses their minds is:Has anyone seen him?He knows this and takes great esteem on it.

Actually, I have a lot of respect for people who make use of thier imagination, even in places where it doesn't really matter! I admit with pride that I do so myself: It IS a fun habit!
You should see what i'm like when I play certain games like Spore.

Most of my guys I keep in hats that improve their stats but a couple just had to have certain fun hats for their characters.

Gill Grunt in the beret, just cuz he is French, and Warnado with the Bunny Ears simply because.

Backstory:
Prism Break hated being slow, and heroic challenges weren't good for him. So, he went with sunburn to Dragon's peak and found out the hat gave lots of speed.
