Well, I think the reference is there, but being related as in family probably not.
It's more of just a nod to him the way I see it.

I thought this myself actually...I mean if you really think about it theres quite a few resemblences with the Classic spyro and SKylanders.
Like it took me a while to realize it, but you have Flynn the balloonist, well in the original spyro thats how you got around (You had a balloonist take you everywhere.) < If that means anything. So its possible, but Moneybags was awesome...

I think he is just a resemblance. Not actually related as the universes don't cross.
