That just looks more like a Pokemon Bottlecap figure more than a Skylanders one. Or even an early beta style of Pokemon Trading Figure Game. Yes it's funny, but Pokemon figures don't have RFID chips which is the main unique point of Skylanders.

However if they did, that would pretty much completely change collecting RPGs. Imagine if you HAD to buy the version exclusive Pokemon, or forced to scan/type a unique password to unlock extra levels/characters/upgrades etc.

I for one, am hoping the Skylanders "buy 'em all" attitude wouldn't extend to other franchises. If it does I'll go back to playing my Sega Mega Drive and never play a new game again

The new Rayman legends game will be using collectible figures that have in game benefits. I believe that they do not hold any data though so all they do is like what the magic items do in skylanders. I see future games having add ons that are accesible with collectible figures but I really hope that the industry doesn't look at skylanders and copy the "data held on figure" mentality, as then that really will be the death of gaming.

Well, Pokémon did already do the whole "physical objects placed/moved around on a surface to use in a game" with Pokémon Battrio, so while the image is totally wrong the point still stands, I guess...

(Also, Battrio did work and is still a huge success.)

Battrio is only big in Japan as far as I'm aware. I've yet to know of the terminals outside Japan. In Singapore TRU stores they have Digimon Cardass machines. To play this game you scan a barcode on a card and that creature/item appears in the game. Some machines give the players cards when they win, so it's something like a TCG in that respect. I have seen a "Wild Animals" style of this game in arcades in Australia.

I've completely forgotten what point I was making here...Sure it was something to do with other games requiring other objects to play smilie

Do you mean Animal Kaiser? If so, my kids got into that for some time but lost interest after awhile (after I went to the trouble of getting both of them gold Bengal Tiger csrds in collector cases, sigh!)

Anyway, I was surprised to find last weekend that the video arcade now had 3 different types games like this: Animal Kaiser, some robot variant and some variant with a touchscreen where the cards were all about giant bugs.

No, no... What ShadowFox has found are the Pokemon Battle Trainer figures. Or V-Trainer or something like that.

Essentially, the figure has a chip in it which stores your Pokemons attacks, stats etc, you plug the figure into the controller and you'd use your team of Pokemon to battle other Pokemon trainers etc.

I have the base thing and 5 figures, Torterra, Palkia, Dialga, Infernape and Empoleon.

The figures use ThinkChip technology, which stores the data on the chip inside them. They used this technology as early as the first gen of Pokemon, so the whole "figures to play games/store data" has been around for a LONG while.

The V-Trainers also used similar technology, but could be expanded with the use of Gym Leader expansions. These were released between the original figures and the Battle Trainer.

BISYEDIT: Also, with the card scanning, in arcades nearby, there's these Dinosaur King machines, where you'd get a card out of it, and the card would have dinosaur/attack data and you'd scan it for use in the game, if that counts.

Yeah, it's not really a wholly original idea, but Skylanders has definitely done it the best.

It's especially a shame with those Trading Figure Game things for Pokemon. The sculpts on them were absolutely beautiful.

As a Pokemon fan since it first came out, I'm glad they didn't go this way; there's too many and collecting them all would be a freaking nightmare. The graphics and trading systems are what Pokemon did best and those sprites!

Well, whopdy-doo for you. This topic isn't about the franchise, more of how the concept came to be and how it was similar to Skylanders
