Actually, you're probably right. I bet it evolved from jokes around the workplace, programmers saying "Stump, SMASH!" when beta testing, and eventually just became the character's real name. I had never considered the Incredible Hulk, but it makes a lot more sense than the alternative, which is essentially no basis at all.
