I recently got one of each elements so I've started going for 3 stars.

Stealth Elf is the best for me-Cynder is quick, but a speed runner needs to have high damage per second, which Cynder doesn't. Also, if using the spectral Lightning, Cynder is slowed down. Melee skylanders(Bash, Slam Bam etc) are other good choices if you don't have a Stealth Elf.

for the moleking mine go with prism break

I find that flameslinger is the best speed runner for me. I have him fully upgraded down the arrows path and he helps me get through the level fast with his dash and he can do some pretty fast damage .

I use Bash.

Stealth Elf is comparable if not better on PS360. Her Acroobatics are close to as quick, and her damage is a lot higher. This evens things squarely in her favor on later maps, while Cynder has the edge through the first half of the game or so. On the Wii, with Acrobatics distance somewhat nerfed, Cynder or Sunburn all the way.

Edit: Oh, and in areas where there are Earth blocks, Terrafin is better than all others. When you need to smash prisms, Prism Break is the only one who can go through without bombs. There are many mitigating factors when choosing the best speed runner, and in a lot of cases, it varies by area.

Cynder's flying is besides the point. It's the dash that makes her awesome for the travel parts. But I don't have stealth elf yet (it's in the mail) but once I get her I'll compare them.

by my observations Cynder's dash is faster than sunburn.

I always use Whirlwind for speed runs.

I use Drill Sergeant. He is Fülle upgraded down the Megadozer path.

I have always used Zap with the slime ability.

Call me crazy... but i think on the speed path is amazingly fast!

I think stealth elf and bash. Cynder can possibly do in my opinion but really you would have to pass enemies with her only if you can.

Stealth Elf+Pook Blade Saint+High speed stat, or just stop playing

I've had no troubles getting through stages quickly enough to qualify for stage completions with just simple plain Spyro.

I usually use ignitor with all heroics done high damage and high speed only 91 but still great

I like using Bash or Flameslinger.

I'll throw my hat in Flameslinger's ring, personally. He's my speed runner. Nice to see that a couple of other people agree with me here.

Yes, don't discount Drill Sergeant. On the PS360 versions, he is in the same league as Cynder and Stealth Elf for speed runs. His charge is probably the overall fastest mode of transportation in the game... unless you play on the Wii.

What about Bash's role? I don't own him so i don't know how fast it is, although i do know it is sorta like a dash.

I use Gill Grunt for speed runs. I fly the entire way with the power hose and starfish clearing everything in front of me. Works every time.

I use Drobot because his "Afterburners" adds a good amount of speed to his gliding and he can deal a great amount of damage fast. I usually ignore all enemies that aren't mandatory during my speed runs because when I first play through the levels, I thoroughly search for everything so I only need the time goals.

I actually like Zap for my speed runs. Like others here, I ignore everything except stuff right in front of me, and just "slime slide" along as fast as he can go.

Zap's slime rush is good, for sure. If I am going to use a flier, it would be Whirlwind! Faster than Spyro and much more nimble than Drobot. I like Bash a lot with the speed roll. When it comes to Flameslinger, he is quick with the fire run, but there is a delay before you can use it a second time, which really sucks.
