Greetings Portal Masters,
I recently got into Skylanders (roughly 2-3 weeks ago), and surprisingly started with the 3DS version. I had to take a plane ride for vacation, so I figured finding a new portable game would be great for the spare time I had.
Ever since then I've been collecting all the figures, and 100%'ing the game. Decided to buy the console version and expand my gameplay even more.
I've run into one odd problem though. Before I even bought the console version (I read that syncing between 3DS and Xbox/PS3/Wii can cause level-issues), I noticed one of my Skylanders skipped from level 8 to 10. It was my Stealth Elf, and at first I thought I must have kept leveling and not realized, but after much thought I was 100% certain those levels were skipped. A few days later, I remember getting my hands on a Pirate Seas Adventure Pack.
I started leveling Terrafin, got him to 7, turned off my 3DS and went to bed. The next morning, I woke up, turned on my 3DS; and BAM! He's level 10.
No one is secretly playing my 3DS/Game when I'm not around, and I did not sync any of my characters to the console version at the time.
I had one more odd occurrence when I bought the console version. I leveled my Slam Bam to 8 on the 3DS before I even had the Xbox Version. I synced him to the Xbox, got him like 80% into level 8, then synced him to my 3DS. He magically turned level 9. I played ONE level on him on the 3DS, he barely had any XP into level 9; and I put him back on the Xbox. BAM! Level 10.
This stuff is confusing the hell out of me.

Both versions have different leveling systems and different amount of XP to move on to the next level. Because of this, the game gets mistaken if you level a character on the 3DS and then play with it on the console version and when you return to the other version it will most likely display its level more or less then it was. Also the console game saves the level of the character on the figure when the 3DS version does not, it saves it on the game cartridge itself so that's also why. The 3DS only saves XP and hat data on the figure so when it goes to read the amount of XP saved on your figure after playing on the console version, it has to convert the XP to its version's XP leveling system. This wouldn't happen if they made the conversion system better or made the amount of XP the same.
So in other words, there's more required XP to level up in the console version than there is in the 3DS version. If you have a character at level 5 that's close to leveling up on the console version, it will most likely be the next level (6) on the 3DS version. And if you have a character at level 7 with a small amount of XP or 0 XP on the 3DS version, it will most likely be down-leveled to 6 on the console version.

Yup, that'll be the 3DS game messing up the levelling, it did that a lot to me too.

Maybe there's just something weird with the game like a glitch. I don't have the 3DS game, so I can't check it out.

Nope, it's the 3DS game, since the EXP requirement is much lower than it is on the console version.
