The other night, I was on Wikipedia. I was looking at the bottom of an article on the Spyro franchise. There was a box listing all the games. There, it listed Skylanders as a spin-off. That makes me suspicious... Does that mean that the real games are the Spyros with Moneybags and Ignitus and such, and Skylanders is just a temporary spin-off. Or is it a lie, and Skylanders is the fate of Spyro forever? Does anyone have any feedback, quotes, opinions, etc.? Please don't get into arguments; I'd like to keep this civil. All criticism is constructive. Thanks for your time

Technically, it is and isn't. Originally the game was meant to be a darker sequel to Spyro, but then they changed it into one more family friendly, and eventually became the one we know today.
That being said, almost everyone refers to it as a spinoff. The way I see it, Spyro from the original games is one universe, ending with A Hero's Tail. Then all the other ones are separate universes. Skylanders is a Spyro from a different universe. But there's a limitless amount of outcomes of what came before and after the game takes place, so there's plenty of room to grow.

I suppose it is considered a spin-off by most people, but it seems more like it's a proper franchise of its own, or at least in the process of becoming one.
I think it's comparable to the Raving Rabbids games, which started out as Rayman spin-offs but quickly became a seperate franchise. Then again it was made to be a Spyro game, so...? |

Personally, I think Skylanders is a second reboot of the Spyro's franchise, like TLoS trilogy. It even confirms the rumor Skylanders Giants, which it looks like it will be a sequel.
But, like FireMeowth said, the series at some point could be divided from the original Spyro's franchise, like Rayman did with Origins and the Rabbids with Go Home. Also, didn't Toys for Bob said in a recent interview that Skylanders IS a Spyro's game?

It doesn't end at A Hero's Tail FYI it currently is at Shadow Legacy and Activision promised if Skylander's sold well then they would make another game to the series (the original)

Skylanders is indeed a spin-off Spyro game, as well as the second reboot in the Spyro franchise.
