I believe its through radio waves. If I recall correctly they said that the PoP (Portal of Power) has a wire that runs around the perimeter of the device and that wire transmits and receives the radio waves. It then has other devices and components that tells the PoP that there are one or more figures on it's scale.
With that in mind, then yes, I would assume that the data is transfer via radio waves / wireless . |

My dad is a computer-techy guy, so he's all interested in how this thing works. He was like "Woaah, coooool" when he first saw me put the character on the portal. I was just casually putting it on there, too. No exitement what-so-ever. xD

My dad does that too XD He was all, "Yes, I see, when the colour flickers like that, it's reading and recovering data, so they must connect through radio waves. The toy has a microchip in the base which is where the memory is stored......." and I kinda zoned out...

I'd imagine it's either radio or possibly infrared. It must be really powerful because it can shoot through the packages in the store and you can hold the figure a few inches away from the portal and the figures still work.

the toys use a thing called RFID (radio frequency identification) each toy contains a RFID chip (much like that ones they use in name badges at places for people to get into secure areas.) each toy has 1KB if memory on it. RFID technology has been around for quite a long time. so its not any type of mystery or voodoo magic.
even better here is the wiki about rfid http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rfid
