i see alot of spin offs in various places, but they are usually nock-off's....

''In media, a spin-off is a radio program, television program, video game, or any narrative work, derived from one or more already existing works, that focuses, in particular, in more detail on one aspect of that original work (e.g. a particular topic, character, or event).'' from wiki...

so by that definition,Skylanders isn't really a spin-off...its more of a new franchise with a Spyro cameo...

I knock-off, by definition, is when a different, unauthorised party uses it. Activision own the rights to Spyro.

Also, spin offs aren't by nature bad. Let's not forget, Frasier was a spin off of Cheers.
