I just saw a commercial for Skylanders on Family channel, and according to it, Spyro is short for the greek word Spyrodon (I think I heard it right), meaning spirit.
Funny, I always thought Spyro was just the word pyro (meaning fire) with an S in front of it.

Really? Was it a new Skylanders commercial that featured Spyro?
Or is it something that most of us already know for a long time now?

Yeah, Spyro is short for Spyridon. Maybe Insomniac were thinking 'Pyro' and then wanted to find a name that had Pyro in it or something, just a guess...

This is really interesting, and I've always loved that name Spyro, it's sounds so unique and cool, but Spyridon is a bit long, lol.

I don't think so. Cuz according to this site, the Spyro that is based on the Latin/Greek etymologies is pronounced SPAY-row.
I read this about a year ago. |

Same footage, but might be a new compilation. A new voice over anyway... Though, I only say saw the end of it.

If I recall Ripto, Gaul and Cynder have names that mean something.
Also pretty obivious what the Element master names come for |

'Ripto' was just what Spyro's name looked like on the Japanese game covers, and 'Cynder' is, well, Cinder with a 'y'.

I thought it was Pyro and Spiro combined?

Actually that makes since because spiro comes from the Latin word spīrāre, which means to breathe and Pyro means a great flame, so the two words combined would roughly translate to fire breather. spyrodon (spirit) is still a neat name but Insomniac could have been thinking of those two words also since it is fitting for him.

I've heard a rumour that Insomniac Games thought up the name up by combining Pyro. |
