It looks like they used a horny toad lizard for inspiration.

With all the uproar about the new look surging throughout the interwebs I will be a tad surprised if they keep this look.

I'm really borderline on this game...

Mostly its the fact that I like to find appeal in the appearence of the char I play, I like just moving them around, seeing how the textures were done etc. Just enjoying the feel, Amaterasu was so beautiful I spent long stretches just running around admiring her. That was a plus for me in dotd, I liked the chars looks. But this new Spyro, i'm just not enjoying looking at(and this is my opinion, not speaking for everyone).

So while the game might be good, it hurts when you dont enjoy what your looking at.
