It was dark, very dark. Mother was huddled down in the cave, Twilight was curled up too, sobbing heatbroken tears, as if an Anake had coiled right round her neck.
"There, there," I murmured, pressing a wet Tangai leaf to Mother's forehead.
"Th-thank y-you, y-you're su-such a g-good gi-irl," Mother stammered, and she nudged her weak paw into mine.
I clutched her paw firmly, she was so cold. Two tears slithered down my cheeks.
"Twilight," I whispered. I settled Mother in the corner of the cave, plastering thick, furry lavender leaves upon her scales.
I crawled over to Twilight and wound my arms around her, she lay against my chest and wept until she had nothing left to cry with.
"My little sis," I mumbled into Twilight's shiny scales.
"She needs help," she sobbed, though no tears could leak. "Why won't they help her!?"
"We're Lunar Dragons," I said bitterly. "Ever since the war we haven't counted."
"You aren't a Lunar Dragon, you're a Mystieek Dragon."
"They hate my kind even more."
"But why don't you morph into another kind?"
"It's too risky! And anyway, what about you three? No, they won't help us, I-I'm so...Oh God, I'm so damn scared."
"They're going to let her die! Just let her wither away!" Twilight cried.
"Shh!" I lowered my voice. "She won't die, not properly."
"Oh yes, yes!" Twilight put on a high mocking voice; "She'll live forever in our hearts!" she swapped to her own voice, "That's not good enough!"
"I don't mean that! I'll t-"
There was a bang upon the rock blocking the cave door.
"Open up!"
It was Shadowlight, back with dinner. Hopefully.
I shoved the door open with my head while he walked in. He's different to me and Twilight, he seems to have this filter, he places his sadness in it and it filters into happy-juice. Twilight and Me are just gloomy.
"How's Mam?" Shadowlight asked.
I looked at him.
"I know, I'm sorry, but we can't help the circumstances, Starlight."
I sauntered out of the cave, looking up at the sky. Willing all the stars in the universe to scatter their light and grant my long, heart-breaking wish...

-------------------------------- I sauntered back to the cave, wishing so hard I felt my head would burst. I half-expected Mother to be sitting up straight and laughing and joking, though I knew their was so chance. I heard a dragon walk through the woods, his claws rasping the floor. I quickly withered down into a grey rabbit, twitching my noes. I am a Mystieek (Miss-teek) Dragon. I have no breath, but my power is transformation. I can transform into my opponiant in battle and mimick their powers. In my mind, I have to draw the object I want to transform into in my head in as much detail as possible and close my eyes, relax... I realised that morphing into a rabbit was not the best thing to do when face to face with a dragon. He lurched forwards and opened his pearly jaws wide. I had no choice, the world whirled around me and I transformed into Cynder, more commonly known as Terror Of The Skies. She draped our woods in shadow, the lank trees drooping and the grass and flowers crumpled. I breathed fire and scalded him, and then leapt airily out of the way. I used my tail as a whip and slashed him, then I galloped off on my bony legs. I turned round, seeing this poor, bleeding little green dragon shivering on the dead floor. I sharnk into a mouse and ran over to him, hid in a bush then morphed into a dragon totally out of my mind. A dragon with glistning white scales and creamy white wing bone with lilac wing-skin. She had four, marble-white, straight-up horns and big, pale lilac eyes matching the lilac under-side. "Oh God!" I cried, acting like it was the first time I'd seen him. He was worse close up, his poor face slashed and his body scalded black. "Oh lord, lord, lord!" I squealed, not putting it on now. I tried to cradle him in my arms and fly him to the lake. I was rather jerky and nearly dropped him once or twice but finally I placed him inside the turquoise stream. It seemed to sooth him. He gave a whimper and awoke. "Huh...?" he murmered. "You're ok, you were attacked," I said softly. "Ow, my face hurts." "You got slashed by...someone..." "My skin feels sore, too." "They burnt you too," I explained. There was a hesitation. "Who are you?" he asked. "Sta...Glaice," I replied. "You?" "I'm Saki," he whimpered. "I was trying to get something to eat, I'm so hungry, but...but Cynder - that little b*tch - attacked me." "Wait here." I left him laid against the bank and dived into the lake. I could see an enormous trout family whirling about the water. I lurched forwards, feeling quite sorry for them now I knew what it was like, but caught three, fat fish in my jaws nevertheless. I placed them by Saki and he relished them, so did I, actually. We had a long long talk about everything and nothing. I joked and laughed at his tales of the woods and he joked and laghed at mine. I had a friend. No, Glaice had a friend. What would he make of the person beneath... ..the one that salvaged him? I looked up at the sky again and wished upon the Starlight...

"I've got to go," I said suddenly, my bubbly, warm, happy side seeping away. "Ok, I'll be fine," Saki said, giving me a little nod. "You will come and see me again, won't you?" "Yes, sure," I replied, though I wasn't sure I would now. I shot off like a rocket, letting my scales darken to their deep, navy blue, my wing bone flooded navy too, then my wing-skin flushed to velvety purple, my horns didn't change, my eyes swirled to acid yellow and my underside turned silver. "Where have you been!?" Shadowlight spat. "Out," I mumbled. "I got that far," Shadowlight sighed. "Where though?" "I met a friend." Shadowlight stared at me, so did Twilight. "I was disguised, alright!" I hissed. "He was injured so I helped him then I caught some fish and we ate, okay!" "Fine, fine, just don't sneak off alright, you have the strongest power of all of us and we need you," Shadowlight said. Then all three of us curled up together at the other pinched corner of the cave. Shadowlight and Twilight looked very simaler, each had glossy black scales, wing bone, with two milky white horns each, wing-skin, claws and eyes, with a black slit for a pupil. I was very different, navy blue scales and wing-bone, purple wing-skin, four marble-white horns and bright yellow eyes. "Cat's Eyes," Mother used to say. We slept. Well, they slept. I kept thinking about that awful Taka, the Fear Dragon, the one who'd inflicted the curse upon our poor mother. I eased myself out of the lump that was me, Twilight and Shadowlight, and curled up close to Mother. Her breath was rasped, was it? No, her breath, I couldn't hear it. I gave her a nudge and she rolled over lifelessly. I let out an awful, ear-splitting scream that echoed as painfully as Taka's fear breath. Mother was dead.

"NOO!" I screamed hoarsly, my head banging. "What, what!?" Shadowlight mumbled, eyes bleary. He wrestled his way towards me and put his hand over my mouth, but then caught sight of Mother and reeled backwards, anstonished. We all knew she was going to die eventually, but we'd never quite believed it, we half-thought she was going to struggle on forever. "Oh God!" Twilight wailed. "Please, please! NO!" We all sobbed, clamped together like a big scaly lump. Even Shadowlight couldn't keep it in this time. I wept, he wept, Twilight positively sobbed her heart out, the youngest of us three, never got to spend as much time with her mother as us. Shadowlight howled as he'd been here the longest, spent as much time with her he could and now felt like he was being torn in two. I was the in-the-middle one, nothing important, spend more time with my Mother than Twilight, but less than Shadowlight. I was Starlight. Nothing. I felt like nothing, like I was the one who'd died. I ran my paws up and down my scales to reasure myself, but it didn't help. I crawled weakly over to the entrance of the cave and looked up at the glittering stars. They looked smug. I howled a throaty cry then shouted up into the night. "TAKA! I HOPE YOU ROT IN HELL YOU STUPID FREAK!!!!!" I curled up on the floor, sobbing. I couldn't leave Mother's body to wither away, I had to do what little I could do for her spirit.

I knew what I had to do. I morphed into Glaice, whisking white as quick as a wink. I wiped my eyes with the tip of my wing and swallowed so hard it hurt, at least my tears went down with it.
I approached the cave and peered in to Shadowlight and Twilight, who were sobbing. They leapt to their feet, alarmed at the sight of another dragon. I could change my voice as well as my body, but kept to my own voice to asure them it was me. "Don't worry," I said hoarsely, my voice catching. "I know what I have to do. Mother would have wanted it." I whisked round, changed my voice to my made-up Glaice voice and spoke aloud to make sure. I had no choice, I had to steal to ensure that mother's spirit was presurved. I sprinted up to the crystal mine, where wealthy dragons lived and poor dragons slaved away, hacking chunks of gravel off the wall to search for crystals. I took a deep breath and entered. It smelt strongly of fumes and smoke. I flew swiftly through silent passages, drifting past sleeping dragons with grazed paws and tear-pricked eyes. I came to an iron door, glinting in the half-light. I quickly morphed into mother, one of the strongest dragons I'd ever known. I gave out a blast of shadow and the door dented until it finally crashed open. The inside was glistening, gleaming, shimmering with crystals. But there were so many. I'd never be able to find what I was looking for in time, as I could hear the ferocious roars of dragons shrieking already. I morphed back into me as I'm very agile when I want to be. I leapt friskily from shelf to shelf and read each tag. I was looking for a Garde D'esprit, but I hadn't a hope as there were hundreds of shelves and I scarcely knew what it looked like. Then I caught sight of something, minty green, tinted with creamy white. The tag in front of it read Garde D'esprit. I hurtled myself towards it with all the might I could muster, but another dragon took hold of my long, skinny tail and yanked me down. "SHOVE OFF!" I shouted, morphing into the golden dragon in front of me. I mimiced his light breath and let out a great blast of white, which made him reel backwards. I leapt into the air and clasped the Garde D'esprit in my golden palm. I curled into a ball, wings wrapped round my face. I flexed out abruptly and a burst of pale light bolted from each scale of my body, making each dragon pass out. I flew out quickly, the Garde D'esprit safe in my hands.

I glided out of the mine, quickly whisking back to my original form. I flapped my wings hard, hearing the horrible crackling sound of flame at my feet as other dragons clawed at my legs.
"GET AWAY FROM ME!" I screamed furiously. I whirled round and spat, forgetting I had no breath. The dragons stopped abruptly at the sight of my face; my black ringed eyes and marked forehead. "It's a Mystieek dragon!" one whispered. "I'M NOT AN IT!" I bellowed, the span round and swooped up high over the trees. I landed gently upon the strip of grass outside my home cave, slid the chunky, coffee-brown rock to the side and sauntered in. Shadowlight and Twilight were clamped together, Twilight whimpering and shaking. I held up the pale, minty-green Garde D'esprit in my paw. "I got it," I whispered. "What?" Twilight snivelled. Shadowlight looked up. "A crystal!" he spat. "You think a crystal can make things better? Just shut your mouth you stupid creep." I felt like he'd kicked me over and stamped on my head. "Fine!" I shouted, dropped the crystal on the floor and hit him. "OUCH! What was that for, you little git!?" "I very nearly got salvaged for that crystal! It's not some stupid dud, it's a Garde D'esprit!" I hissed. Twilight and Shadowlight looked blank. "A Spirit Keeper!" "Oh, goodie! Lets preserve Mother's spirit and chuck it in a lake, just like we did with sis Lunarlight, also killed by Taka! How long is it going to be before we stand up to that dozy cow?" Twilight hissed. "We aren't going to shove it a lake, prat. We - or at least I - am going to the top of Esprit Spire, taking Mother's spirit with me, she can live in there. I don't know about you useless freaks but I'm going to hear what little of the words she now wishes to say," I announced, then two tears slithered down my cheeks. They looked at me like I were mental, Esprit Spire in the highest peek in Covlaer, and is easily the most dangerous and hardest to climb. Only five dragons have survived it. I stepped over to mother and held the crystal above her, then a void of milky white spirit spiralled slowly out of her back and into the crystal. I stroked the crystal and clutched it tight in my palm. Knowing that my mother - without her horrid illness - was curled up in there made me feel just a slight bit better. I padded out of the door, but I felt a hit on the shoulder. I turned round and saw Twilight and Shadowlight. "We're with you," he said simply, nodding. I nodded back and looked at the stars, they didn't look smug anymore, they looked astounded at my bravery...and stupidity. I glared back and whispered to the sky. "You can stare at me and blink at me as long as you like, you can hold the worst messages in the world and shine a burning light over me as a warning, but I don't care. If I am to live I shall hear her last words, if I am to die we shall reunite, but I don't care about anything. I'll do whatever you want, anything to spend just one more second with her." "I'm wishing upon you Starlight, join to my name and grant my wish."

I walked through the village, feeling worried. Despite the nudges and pokes in my back, and the whispers of "What are we going to do!" crawling through my ears, I stayed true to my form.
"Oh. My. GOD!" a dragon shouted, squealing with excitment. "It's a Mystieek Dragon, and two Lunar Dragons! LOOK!" "Yeah, you gawp you jumped up $%#@," I spat. Then I stopped, noticing the face of the gawping dragon. It was Saki. "You!" I cried, as the slashes on his face seemed to reveal themselves. My slashes. "Yeah, what about me?" Saki said, with an edge to his voice. "I know you!" I said, making my voice calm, so he would know I wouldn't be a threat. I needn't have bothered. Saki sneered and wrinkled his green slashed nose, but winced. "You don't know me. I'd never hang around with the likes of you," he spat. I stared at him, transfixed at this monster. He only thought of people for their looks, that was all. I could come along in my shimmering, pearly white scales and act in the excact same manner, and he'd be in ecstasy, but in my navy Mystieek body he'd wrinkle his nose and sneer. "You're nuts, you don't even know who you know," Saki hissed. "Shut up," I growled. He was asking for it. I transformed into a pure, gleaming, snowy-white dragon with great flexing white wings, with a lilac inside. My eyes were large and pale violet, matching my wings, outlined in thick lashes. I had a lilac underside too, and four milky-white horns on my head. I smirked. "Recognise me?" I quipped. He stared, and his skin beneath flushed so bright that his scales reflected crimson.
