Axim
Chapter 1
War Toys
Father had told me again and again to never go near a War Toy. They were dangerous, wicked creatures that had one objective only: to kill. I’m sure that ever since I was a tiny wrinkled prune in a bundle of blankets he has told me ‘Keep away from the War Toys.’ It didn’t work though; I never listened to him, or mother when she was alive, though I loved her dearly. I had the biggest bond with Axim, the War Toy.
I can still remember Axim. The top of her head, her pointed ears and furry spiked cheeks were glossy black. Her face was blood red with wicked yellow eyes and sharp, needle-like lashes. Axim’s neck was thin and spindly with a sinister spiked metal collar shining on it. She had a very thin bony body that made her agile and frisky. Her legs were slender and had black fur up to the knee until it merged into its dark red colour, so it looked as though she were wearing black stockings, although she had sharp, jet-black claws that could tear open a brick wall. Her tail was thin and pointed, the tip of it black. There were silver cuffs prised on her legs and tail and she had huge bony black wings that came up on giant stalks, but there were flaps of scarlet skin between each spiky bone. Her claws and poisonous fangs were deadly, but she didn’t just have physical powers; she had many dark, shadowy abilities too.
What is a War Toy? They are creatures made to fight in the wars of 2059. They are made mostly from a chemical called Chlurified. They are made in factory that Father runs. They have a very different body to a normal animal, no blood, for example, just a foul smelling steam. They have very sturdy skeletons made of metal and no heart. I’m not kidding. If you put your hand to a War Toy’s chest you won’t feel and pulse beating away in their body. They do have minds, but not as developed. They’re very clever in ways but they can’t distinguish friendliness from aggression and are easily angered. But they’re made that way, that’s why Axim was so remarkable.
I was very antisocial, I still am. I have a friend though, Olevern. He had a horrible ability in my eyes, though he didn’t care. But I was antisocial, I hated human beings, Axim hated the world too.
That was why we were so close.
But in these pages Axim will live forever, for I am going to write my life and her life once again on parchment, right from the beginning when she was created.

I buried my head my lumpy pillow, hearing the whir of machinery underneath me. My black hair was tangled and itchy against my pale face. I sat up on my juddering bed and slipped out onto the floor. The floors are so thin it’s a wonder I didn’t crash right through them and land on the rusty tanks and poles. I padded angrily down the shaky stairs, ready to find Father and have a mammoth rant about the stupid machines. But I saw he was in the Creating Chamber. I didn’t know what it created but it certainly wasn’t cakes and cookies. I heard shrieks from it each night, they weren’t fun to listen to when I was trying to curl up in my pathetic little bed and go to sleep. I often punched the wall in anger, cutting my knuckles. It drove me demented. I’d been told very firmly never to go near that room. But I’d had enough. “Dear God! Couldn’t you mess about with your stupid fish tank when it’s actually daytime? Some of us are trying to sleep!” I yelled furiously, bursting in. “Leira!” Father shouted, bustling over to me. “Get out of this room this instant and go to bed!” “Ha ha ha ha no. You try and get to sleep when this freak machine is whirring bellow you!” I screeched. I peaked over his shoulder and saw a gush of mist flying past in the tank. There was a thin, cat-like creature with spiny wings and wicked yellow eyes stood in the container, I pushed past Father and stared at it in awe. Its eyes narrowed and it started hissing at me, its black claws swiped at the glass and made a huge gash in it. The creature was rather big, about the size of wardrobe. “So this is a War Toy?” I asked. Father didn’t reply, he just glared at me in anger and steered me out of the room by my shoulders. “What’s her name?” I questioned as I stepped reluctantly up the rickety stairs. “Whose name?” Father replied. “The War Toy’s.” “It doesn’t have one.” “She’s not an It. I saw the figures on that screen thingy, she’s a she,” I said, pulling away from his clasp. “Whatever,” said Father carelessly. “Name her,” I persisted. “Look, it’s just a flaming War Toy. It doesn’t need a gender, it doesn’t need a blooming name!” Father growled. “SHE!” I yelled, as the door was slammed shut. I wasn’t entirely winding Father up. I did hate it when he just called them by it. They deserved names, they deserved an identity, everyone did.
