If you miss a crate, purposely fall into a pit. You'll be sent back at a checkpoint with no health loss and still with all the crates you've already got. Just be careful not to miss a crate right before the end of the track.

Place an elite skylander or a giant so when you hit stuff you won't die fast...I did it with tree rex and elite spyro , and if you have someone that can help you that will make things so much easier for you to get cortex's soul gem.
