Hi all,
I tend to like playing ranged in most all games, so when I created an Undead Swashbuckler, I went ranged. I'm wondering, however, if a melee build might be stronger. Has anyone conducted any comparative analyses?
TIA,
Oy.

I'm a ranged player to begin with, but I feel like Ranged Swashbucklers are incredibly insanely OP. Melee is just insanely OP. It's a matter of play style really...

I made a undead swashbuckler which I love. I use melee with the poison cloud around you undead attack and the underground upercut dash thing. Kicks major butt since you can have a cloud around you constantly.

I personally prefer ranged characters, but I chose the melee attack for my Swashbuckler. The ranged one is hilariously powerful and I don't think it really fits my character.

Since I can switch on the fly, it's perfectly valid to use whatever suits the situation. That said, I prefer melee by default.

Wow, I am so surprised someone else had this idea so soon! I made my undead swashbuckler (Captain Bones) in that configuration by coincidence on the first day I played. Both approaches work great, but here's some advice for you: If you use a ranged undead swashbuckler, use last laugh for the attack 2 (O in the PS4) and the sword wall for attack 3 (triangle on the PS4). That way you can put up a protective wall that also obstructs enemy movement and you can use last laugh to lob skulls over the wall and at enemies without sending the swords flying, so they'll stay up in a defensive formation.
My close ranged layout for Captain Bones is the charger (I think that's what it's called?) attack for attack 1 so he can slash and push through enemies, the contagion attack for attack 2 to spread damage around (stricken targets by the close range blow infect other enemies) and the attack where the undead swashbuckler goes underground for his attack 3 so he can pass through enemies and get behind them to start slashing or infecting them with contagion. It allows for a very dynamic, effective battle style where he's on the move a lot. My long ranged layout for Captain Bones is the charger attack for attack 1 and the attacks I referenced in the first paragraph. It's great for survival, but on the other hand, while Captain Bones rarely stopped moving when I used him on the close ranged layout, he was typically standing still a lot with this layout and enemies that lob projectiles (like the green electric-lobbing bugs in Mushroom River or the trolls in the Light Sensei Realm) could bypass his defenses and attack him directly even when he had the sword wall up, so be careful of them if you try to imitate this! The styles do have their differences. Choose whichever one sounds better to you. |

I love the melee attack + sword wall combo. I use it with a Water crystal and the piranha attack. The ranged might be better for all I know (haven't tried it) but melee is already so overpowered that it doesn't really matter.
