Most likely longer than us all. Shove them in a shoebox and put them in a cool basement for 50 to 100 years and your grandkids should be able to enjoy them, assuming you can tear them from their virtual reality gaming consoles.

I've noticed that the lights in a few of my giants fail to come on..in fact, they don't even register. So, I dunno if it's shoddy craftsmanship on Activision's part, perhaps a fluke with some of the figures or what.
Generally speaking, the chips should last a long time. The lights inside of the Giants and LCs should maybe last for a while.

Why did Uncle Peter have an interdimentional portal in his attic? Spyro's entire collection! [Updated June 28th 15] |

They should last some time, but some specific figures seem to die way earlier than others(seen a lot mentioning Legendary Bouncers). But I wouldn't count on it being more than 10 years before either the portal or the chips stop working properly, they're not meant to be around for long if new portals keep getting released.

This article may be of interest: http://www.technovelgy.com/ct/...e.asp?ArtNum=47
I believe that the RFID tags inside Skylanders are classified as "passive" RFID tags, as they do not have their own power supply, and rely on the RFID reader (in this case, the portal) to power the tags. The article says that because these types of tags are not self-powered, they are able to last 20 years or more. So with that said, I would expect the Skylander chips to live for a very long time. My original three SSA starter pack figures from June 2012 still work like a charm.

I've been collecting them since SSA came out, and I've only ever had one figure stop working. The giant, Swarm, and that was most likely just a fluke. It also happened around the time that I moved. I would imagine that 10 hours in a box in a hot moving truck in the middle of a Florida summer is not the best conditions for figures, no matter how well they're packed.

The field on the Trap Team portal isn't as consistently strong across its entire area as compared to earlier portals, so folks reporting that some giants, lightcores, etc., not lighting up properly might mean that they just need to be repositioned moreso than those figures are going bad. I had the typical issues out of the usual Giants-era problem children (Legendary Bouncer, Gnarly Tree Rex, etc.) until I pushed them right up against the wall of the portal, then boom, they pop right on like they're supposed to. Before declaring a figure failing, defective, etc., try plugging up an old portal and trying out those characters in an older game if possible. You might be surprised.

RFID has been engineered/tested to work 20 years. We had a thread here a year or so ago. They'll become yard gnomes in no time!

RIP GhostRoaster. He's reanimated as TakeYourLemons but occasionally is resurrected from the beyond when needed. |
