Penalty for Upgrading Early?

The title pretty much asks the question - in the earlier games (namely Spyro's Adventure), sometimes there would be a penalty for buying a character's upgrades early - some of the Heroic Challenges would become far more difficult or nearly impossible to complete with upgraded attacks.

I know that Heroic Challenges aren't a thing in this game any more, but are any of the other play modes made more difficult by buying a character's upgrades, or is it better to get them and do the challenges? Is Trap Team set to bring back Heroic Challenges?

Thanks for any help!

1. We don't know if TfB will or won't bring Heroic Challenges back. Doubtful, but unconfirmed.
2. I doubt they would make design decisions in this game that would provide a penalty. It's one of those questions that we won't know until we know everything the game offers.

I know what you mean, the Heroic Challenges that were particularity affected by some upgrades were Save the Purple Chompies! and You Break It, You Buy It! and to a lesser extent Break the Cats.

Cynder and Tree Rex's soul gem have allies that attack for you, making it near impossible to complete them (although in Cynder's case, her ghost ally wouldn't attack purple chompies/paintings in Spryo's Adventure, but would in Giants; Tree Rex was screwed regardless with the woodpecker killing everything).

Other's I found challenging were Sonic Boom (her upgrade that leaves behind echo/waves) and Eruptor (upgrade where his lava blobs would leave the ground on fire where they landed). Purple chompies would flock to these lingering attacks.

In Swap Force, no one's upgrades hindered them from completing any of the Bonus Missions, survival arenas, etc since none of those required you be careful not to destroy specific enemies or items.

I know exactly what you mean. When I played as Zap after fully upgrading him to Tesla Dragon, I was having trouble completing Double Trouble's Heroic Challenge. Every time I attack enemies, Zap's electrical attacks reflect into the terrible portraits, and I instantly failed. But honestly, I am glad the Heroic Challenges were replaced with Bonus Missions and Arena Battles, because Heroic Challenges are the ultimate time killers (the bad kind).

Pretty sure that wasn't a deliberate penalty thing, more an oversight. After all it's possible for you to have upgraded 20 figures all the way before getting to the purple chompie quest...

I doubt they will put anything like that in again, it's a kids game after all and that requires a level of planning not many kids have.

Anyone who has been on the "Quest Upgrade" track upgrading Skylanders know the penalty all too well. I think it's fair to say that those things were "technical oversights" by TfB and that, if Heroics or something similiar appears we won't get that problem again. But then again, never say never. It's nothing but a guessing game until we know the game's features.

My advice: Avoid upgrading your skylanders until we have the full scoop. Which more than likely will be when it's in your hands.

It's bugs like this, plus just the overall tediousness of the HCs that really make me hope they aren't coming back. I really preferred SF's Bonus Mission method, where the bonus was just applied to every character automatically. It made it less tedious and let me play as whoever I wanted.
