I seriously doubt this will kill all connectivity of the Wii, likely the individual programs will still work (Hulu, Netflix etc.) so if (and that is a big if) they do put in online play as long as they use their own servers (like all the Madden games use) for the connection rooms you should still be able to play it just fine even if Nintendo kills their internet programs for the Wii.

Playing games online for the Wii is ending. Some other services still work, and the eShop also.

If I'm correct, doesn't the patch get downloaded to the system? I don't even know, but I don't think it matters since I'm skeptical that this "back end patch" even exists. I cleared out 1500 blocks like everyone has been saying to do to get it, and my game still freezes periodically. >.>

Reading over the actual announcement I am next to positive that if a game wanted to have its own servers it could and that only the Nintendo supported servers are what is effected by this. However if you do follow the links and see what games will be affected by this change the first one that shows is trap team, which I find rather humorous considering the game doesn't release for 6 months after the shut down occurs. But honestly this does not surprise me in the slightest as the services cost money to sustain and the system being what 7 years old now make their investment in them questionable to say the least.
