Yup, you can tell that when things in his videos get addressed, so if anything, they are aware of the issues he presented. Now actually going about fixing them though ..that's something we can only wait on.

Here's some Switch gameplay from Gamescom.



You can definitely notice the reduction in foilage, there are points where the grass in Artisans is completely flat, almost like the PS1 original. Kind of ironic since one of the things they hyped up for the PS4/Xbox One release was how the PS1 games looked very flat texture wise due to how they had to render wide open spaces, compared to Crash, and the Reignited version fills in all that space with details now that they have the horsepower.

Can't glean much else from the footage since it's off camera, but my main hope for the Switch version is that the frame pacing issue is fixed.

I have to admit I’m a bit disappointed they put two Mutants skin as the Silver and Gold final prizes, especially after at least the ultimate reward has usually been a skin for the Bronze character, but I really like them and I loved Mind over Mutants so I can’t really complain that much.

I do have the suspicion there will be more Spyro-themed Grand Prix, if anything because of how the track seems to reference only first game’s levels despite the fact Hunter comes from the second one (so it’s not a matter of representinc exclusively the first entry) and also because of how lots of fan favorites were left out, but to be completely honest I’m already happy to be able to play as Spyro. smilie

Also while I'm disappointed he doesn't seem to have a Legendary skin, at least that means I can use him as my Max Nitro Bonus character if he's Accel.

I hope they get Sunglasses Spyro in there somewhere though.

Spyro on Switch DOES require a download, and it's a sizable one. You need at least 10gb of free space and a microSD card is recommended

I think we might get one on September 3rd, when it officially releases on all platforms, but I’m not expecting anything major.

I think they would have said something by now, if they added new content of any kind, just like they did for N. Sane Trilogy.

On a completely different subject, seeing Artisans’ castle interiors being depicted with the aesthetics of Dark Hollow in CTR made me wonder if the various levels within the Homeworlds could be way closer to each other than they may appear.
I’m ignoring the fact they didn’t put a portal there and consider it simply a design choice to make the Magic Craftes locations feel more distant, so I don’t actually think that Dark Hollow could directly be accessed from Artisans but I’ve never actually felt like there was a direct connection between the various worlds and I’ve usually seen the portals as the only way to access the different locations.

I know there are some maps of both the Classic and Legend trilogies around the Internet, but I’m not sure how reliable they truly are.
I’m sure the respective Homeworlds are somehow reachable normally (the hot air balloon is a proof of that, as I doubt it’s magical) and extend far beyond what we get to explore, but I’m a lot less convinced about the different worlds especially seen how they seem to be stuck in certain conditions (daytime, weather, season).

I could of course simply explain all of that with “MAGIC”, but where would the fun be, then? smilie

I would think the patch would be about as big as the one that was released for the Crash N. Sane Trilogy when it went multi-platform.

PC version looks like a really solid port all around, I'm excited to play it. I might actually move my installation to my SSD. He doesn't go into any details on the actual settings it has though. If you have the PC for it, this is the definitive version of the game.

Switch version has a fair few noticeable downgrades, mostly in foilage, lighting, and texture quality. The performance is slightly worse than it was on PS4 (which already wasn't great). However that's mostly only an issue in docked mode, it runs well in portable mode. No word on resolution but it does look pretty low on docked, definitely less than 720p. Motion Blur can't be used at all in portable mode.

I plan to make my own review of the game in general and comparing the PS4/Switch/PC versions, I'll get as detailed as I can there.

Seems pretty solid so far, as far as a Switch port could be.

There is this really annoying shadow dithering in handheld mode though. Dunno what's up with that but it's irritating. Also the general LOD of the game decreases in handheld mode, there's barely any blades of grass in handheld mode compared to docked.

EDIT: I'll copy-paste this from a reddit post I made.

-Frame pacing issues from PS4/Xbox still exist.

-Frame rate drops slightly more frequently and to a more noticeable degree.

-I haven't done a definitive test but the Switch version when docked feels really off, like there is extra input lag compared to PS4 Pro/Handheld mode. Spyro feels really heavy when playing docked (with Switch Pro Controller). Handheld feels fine though. And for reference, I played the PS4 version for a few hours today so my muscle memory is fresh.

-Voice audio has been noticeably compressed, it's more muffled, likely to save on file size. Not a deal breaker but you will notice it with headphones especially if you've played the PS4/Xbox versions with headphones on.

-I'm not sure how to definitively read resolution on the fly even with my capture card just yet, but it's definitely not going any higher than 720p docked. The game will look super blurry on large TVs, especially if you are used to the 1440p of the PS4 Pro/Xbox One X. Handheld Mode seems to be dynamic resolution.

-Shadows have heavy artifacting in handheld mode, it gets kind of irritating.

-General LOD decreases significantly in Handheld Mode, noticeable mostly in blades of grass in grassy levels. The opening spawn point in Artisans is a perfect place to compare if you want, there is barely any grass in handheld mode there, while it's relatively similar to PS4 Pro in docked mode (though still less if you look more closely).

-Multiple new languages are fully supported. Perhaps PS4/Xbox One could get these patched in?

Overall, it's a decent conversion. I think it's pretty good to play in handheld mode minus the shadow artifacting, but docked mode leaves something to be desired if you have a large TV, and not to mention the input lag issue (IIRC this isn't uncommon in Switch ports in docked mode, Crash N.Sane Trilogy has it too).

I will be testing things more extensively over the coming week and plan to make a video comparing PS4 Pro/Switch/PC. These notes are based on about 30 minutes of play. As it stands, it's looking like one of those "only play in handheld mode" ports, especially if you have the Switch revision with the longer battery life. I wouldn't recommend making this your primary version to play on the TV/monitor unless you don't have any other option and really want to play on your couch on the TV.

Unless they plan to patch in the new languages to the PS4/Xbox One versions, a patch is looking unlikely for those systems. They didn't do any bugfixing by the looks of it so there is no patch to implement.

It was available to the general public when I played it. Game released digitally at midnight.

The Switch version isn't likely to get a patch and the PS4/Xbox One versions won't be patched if the Switch/PC versions didn't get any fixes.

Only chance now is if they decide to add new content to all versions down the line.

PC version has been a dream so far. I unfortunately can't maintain a stable 60 FPS at 4K but I can on Ultra settings at 1440p. That's the same resolution as PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, but it looks sharper due to better TAA on PC.

Also if you use a PS4 controller and have PS4 controller support enabled in Steam settings, the game will use a PS4 UI and the touchpad can be used for camera control.

I... Honestly failed to understand what was the big problem behind microtransactions in CTR.

I know this isn’t the right place to discuss it, but I simply can’t see what’s so wrong with giving players the option to buy in-game coins to purchase purely cosmethic items which at most give you a slight boost when filling the nitro gauge for the current Grand Prix and have no impact on the rest of the game whatsoever.

If we were talking about buying something which gave you an advantage over the others and could not be obtained by playing normally then rest assured I would be the first to rise my voice, but I think they are pretty harmless as of now.

Same goes for whatever similar feature may appear in future Spyro games: even without actual in-game currency, I would not be against small DLCs to change his skin with something else (like Cynder, Ember, Flame or even his Skylanders design) as long as they remain purely aesthetic differences, though I doubt slight ganeplay changes would annoy anyone in a single-player title.

Could there be a better way to handle skins and unlockables?
Sure, even cheats would be a better idea!
Does it ruin the game like many seemed to believe?

The problems with CTR (and anything Spyro) having microtransactions are:

-It's a game you pay a premium for upfront (€39.99). Unless you are buying additional content developed after release via DLC, you should never have to pay any money after the initial purchase. Microtransactions belong in free-to-play games, not full-fledged console releases. Especially not remakes of existing games.

-The "they're just letting you give yourself a little boost" argument is forgetting the tiny detail that it's the publisher who enforces the developer to create an economy where a boost via microtransactions would seem necessary to a player. Wumpa Coins do not have an inherent value as they are not a real currency. Compare CTR to Team Sonic Racing which has a similar customisation system and coins you receive after each race. CTR gives you barely any coins for playing offline, none at all if you aren't connected to the internet (and you can't even access the Pit Stop shop unless you are connected anyway), and your only way of getting a significant amount of coins is your 30 minute "Wumpa Time" each day and double coins earned on weekends, both of which only apply to online play. This means players feel pressured to grind this out every day to keep their coin flow decent to keep up with the items being added to the store. TSR on the other hand lets you earn and spend coins offline and you get plenty regardless of what you play, and the items are cheap too. And there are no microtransactions or daily grinds to contend with. That is not a coincidence. CTR is intentionally designed to make you feel like you NEED a boost, which is the definition of predatory.

-"They're just cosmetic" doesn't change a thing, people with compulsive spending habits/kids with their parents' credit card saved on their system can still be caught out by this. Activision banks on that.

-Activision intentionally waited until AFTER release to add the microtransactions, so reviews couldn't mention it. This is a problem because many people going through therapy for their compulsive spending problems actually swear off buying games that feature microtransactions and do research on games they are interested in to make sure they don't have them. Activision waited long enough to where people interested in the game would have the time to do their research, find out the game has no microtranasactions, and then after people buy it, they then add the microtransactions. Now anyone who might have been trying to avoid those kinds of games because of their issues with this stuff, has temptation staring them in the face because they already have the game.

"What happens to Crash, happens to Spyro" is only true in a marketing sense. Something as nitty gritty as patches is a different story. For example, if Spyro didn't need patches, they wouldn't arbitrarily put one out just because Crash did.

Now, Spyro DOES need patches, but this is Activision we're talking about. Like, the only reason the Switch version has a download requirement is because Activision cheaped out on cartridge production. On that same note, patches are actually kind of expensive to put out, especially on PS4 and Xbox One. So that's likely why Activision is hesitant to put one out.

At bare minimum, I think there needs to be a hotfix patch for the PC version to fix some of the issues exclusive to it.
