Right... but they also just did the Warcraft movie last year, and they've "envisioned" plans to do Call of Duty films and/or TV shows. Skylanders is probably their most family-friendly IP, but it's not the only iron they have in the fire.

This also does a 180 from the rumor that was given to Liam. Unless it's Netflix just throwing money around as they're doing with all their good franchises and Acti gave up on trying to cancel, which would be kinda funny.

Heck even Liam himself is starting to belie that the franchise is staying alive! Look at his Twitter!

I'd still be fine if there was no game this year and they just took a small break to do some expansions. Imaginators could use some more content and my wallet could use a year long break.

I'm hoping that they're developing it. But yeah they most likely have been developing it this entire time.

Whoa, a lot has happened since yesterday! I agree with a lot of people here and would like a one year break if there's going to be another game. But also, just updating Imaginators and adding stuff would be a cool idea. That would be better than nothing.

I just want to correct myself on a few things I said yesterday:

1. I noticed and realised we don't have to record the conference call ourselves next week, as Activision record it and keep it on their site anyway.

2. I tried to check when the previous games were confirmed, and found out that Skylanders 4 (which turned out to be Trap Team) was confirmed in November 2013. So the games haven't always been confirmed in February. But that at least has been the case for the past two years.

So now that Academy Season 3 has been confirmed, it'll be very interesting to hear what they have to say on next week's conference call! I'm looking forward to it. 7 days to go!

I'd prefer if they released a potential Skylanders 7 in 2018 as well, so that it could be developed for at least two years just like the last four games, especially since it looks like we won't miss out on some kind of content this year.

I doubt this had been entirely planned, but it's indeed coming together nicely.

No it doesn't. What Netflix defines as "success" and what Activision does are two completely different things.

People are like "Hey, they brought back Tony Hawk and Guitar Hero after a couple years off". But Skylanders, due to the figures, require a significant up front investment in figures that have to be made well in advance of the game release. It is like the old cartridge market - many times over, and that buried Atari. Making a run of CDs is cheap, an unsuccessful game hurts, but it won't bury a big company - they only have a few cents per copy buried in expenses. Figures though they probably have couple dollars per figure invested. That's a ton of up front costs, and it takes months of preparation, they cannot just go "oh, fire up dev again!".

If Skylanders comes back in a few years, I would expect it first be a figure-less game to test the waters. Either that or a vastly decreased roster. If the show continues to do well, this is a possibility.

Well, season 3 confirmed is total opposite to the cancellation rumors. Not saying Sky7 is being developed for sure, but this is the first solid, realiable and strong argument we have against the dissapearance of skylanders. Undeniable good news for the franchise as a whole

Skylanders Academy has been renewed for a 3rd season set to air in 2018. That settles it then. Any doubt I had about whether or not this franchise would continue is gone. There's no way they'd scheduled episodes for 2018 if they're not releasing a new game in 2017.

I'd be down for a figure-less game, or one that's all old figures with maybe some releseases(but not horribly done like the Champions series 3 figures). Focus all dev time on game and the world, put all the meat of the design into NPCs to really go crazy.

I would really like that. Maybe make Adventure Packs compatible again, beef all old characters, maybe add some extra modes, and stuff.

Or at least a smaller roster. Giants proved that quality over quantity works.

SA also is based on Trap Team's art design, so aside from the cynical writing, there wouldn't be many changes style-wise compared to the games as they are now. Gameplay is a whole another issue.

Well, it's possible that Netflix saw that they were on a good thing ratings-wise with Skylanders Academy, and so they decided to contribute a larger proportion (or all?) of the production budget for season 3, in order to keep the show going. Activision wouldn't say no to that. "Royalties for little to no financial contribution? Yes, please!"

VV are busy with two other high-profile projects (PS4 Crash Bandicoot trilogy and the Destiny 2 PC port), so it's extremely unlikely that they've been doing any work on a new Skylanders game.

The Skylanders Academy season 3 announcement is good news for Skylanders Academy and Activision's consumer products division. It has little to no bearing on the future of the game series. (If anything, I'd think that it might mean we end up getting non-toys-to-life 'Skylanders Academy' tie-in games on various platforms in the future, eg iOS and Android.)

On February 9, we'll see if Activision says anything about a new Skylanders game for later this year. That will give us a better indication of the current direction of the game franchise, at least.

This clearly helps the games case and I see at least 1/2 more games coming because of this news now my guess is that we wouldn't get it till november if TFB is making it maybe it will be more like a spinoff more along the lines of academy

it was specifically mentioned by liam that TFB was "in the clear" for now- not VV. VV has their hands full with crash and destiny.

I have a feeling that TFB will add new senseis/levels/parts to imaginators, and let VV do sky7 in 2018. either that or a rushed 7th game from TFB.

Not saying I think this is a direction they will take, but with the advancements in 3D printing an option for Activision would be to release a figureless game but still give people the option to order custom 3D printed figures. They wouldn't be needed to play the game but could be an option for collectors and it would certainly eliminate their need to put in cash up front to have figures made. Because I do tend to agree with Defpally on this, I'm not sure that the sales trend supports the argument to produce more and more figures up front.

yeah. they could just patch in an alternative story line (another 10 level plot) and keep the adventure packs at minimum. (and if they do make more of those, using level pieces would be great)

if it will be bad it sill dasent answer this quastion: if the toys are not selling good then why put more money on more advnture packs and even more then that, making a thierd season of academy that will go out in 2018?

I have a feeling they are adding these "Adventure Packs" to help move the last few figures and sell off some chest/crystal inventory. Giving more content will get some more sales done and give a nice bump in interest that has been getting worse each year for late wave releases. I don't expect the new levels to be be extremely large, just enough to get people back interested so they can sell off the remaining toys. And with TfB devs not really working on a new game they have some resources to make them.

The game hasn't sold much, but they said somewhere that a Skylander figure is bought about every 2 seconds.
