Why not just use a not very highly leveled skylander? You arent losing anything if you accidentally reset that level 4 Fright Rider...

First of all, because Skylanders aren't the same as Crystals.
Secondly, resetting isn't the issue, since that's the intended result. The problem is that it could potentially corrupt the figure completely, rendering it permanently unplayable. That is a major risk, regardless of the figure in question.

Yup, one thing is a surefire way of getting a new class without spending an extra 10 bucks, the other is a chance of wasting the 10 bucks you had and having to buy a replacement crystal(unless Acti is still nice about replacing those in nearly every case).

Could this logic be used on the PC?

I'm just not on my local PC atm, but could you in theory get a 3DS emulator, use your current portal via USB and then load the game through the emulator?

For future reference, it is only SSA 3DS that will reset the Crystals, at least as far as I know. I tried using Giants for Traps and found that it just identified them as unusable figures. Most likely it would flag the CCs as incompatible as well, so don't bother with the other games; I know that STT and SSC can't reset Traps from experience.

Good news to those that have knowledge and the software/hardware. It's still going to be interesting to see what the uninitiated fans end up feeling because they didn't include it in their Imaginators code.

I'm not familiar with 3DS emulation, but I am guessing that you cannot just plug a USB portal into your PC and emulate a copy of Sky3DS on it. The game is expecting to communicate with the portal via the built-in IR port, not USB. It'd take some major reworking of the code (either the game's ROM or the emulator itself) to get such a trick to work - and I don't think anyone cares enough/is dedicated enough to make this work.

Unfortunately it's not the 3DS portal that's the reason this works. The 3DS Spyro's Adventure game is different than the console and PC version -- the story is different, and so is the method of scanning in figures. That's why it has the option to fix "corrupted" toys that allows us to reset traps and crystals, and the other versions of the game don't.

Does this do anything to the Imaginite Chest toys? Since they're supposed to be one-time use I'm not sure how they lock themselves out after being 'redeemed' in-game.

The chests themselves aren't locked in any way; they can be re-used on other save files. The game just remembers the code from the one you scanned in and blocks it from running again on that same save.

Personally, I think the 3DS version of Spyro's Adventure is a very fun game in its own right. Definitely well worth a mere 99 cents.

Oh, thanks. I was under the impression they worked once, ever, and couldn't be reused on other save files or other players' games. That adds a lot more value to those for me since I can use them twice (normal playthrough, nightmare playthrough) and my little sister can use them too.

I've used it a lot of times on my Earth Crystal, which has gone through all of the classes (some of them twice or more, because I forgot to check something), checking out requirements for all the different parts, including Class-specific ones.

But it's now a Brawler full-time, just as I had initially planned.

To me the safer option till we know more about the new formatting is to make a backup bin of the crystal fresh out of the box using SkyReader or similar software, then you can simply restore that bin to reset it. This is also a good option for users without a 3DS.

I searched around and was unable to find a rules post outlawing this. Regardless a mod can edit it out if they see fit, but I really see no reason to censor this information. Cheaters will find a way to cheat regardless, but some users require such software only for quality of life and backup purposes. If we were talking about devices that can clone tags id be more understanding.

I like this method better than the third party ones. It's technically "official" even if it's unintended. Also I really doubt there's anything about it that's unsafe for the crystal.

Can you use the Trap Team portal? My son has a 3DS and Trap Team on 3DS. If I could find the SSA cartridge cheap and use the Trap Team portal, that would be great. Otherwise, I'm not sure. I've seen some portals at Half-Price Books in the past. Not sure if they still have them or not.

so you have tested this with SkyReader or similar software and reset the crystals, and it worked?... if so then people dont need to buy the 3ds ssa. they can just use a portal with the usb to their pc and be done with it.

I checked out SkyReader, and all I can say is that it is not for the common man. There doesn't se to be an application to use with it, just a bunch of files that somehow work together; I can't even read the README because it is in a format I can't run.

Pyrofer's tool would be better for this, but the version that could reset data is obsolete; he doesn't have it up anymore.

Hrm... in theory, this might be able to also work with the respective 3DS versions of Giants, Swap Force, Trap Team, and Superchargers Racing. I have Spyro's Adventure 3DS and I could try it on SF and TT 3DS and see if the trick works with those games. As for Giants and Superchargers Racing 3DS, I don't have those games yet. Nor any creation crystals to test with. But I'll report back here as soon as I can try it.

It works with giants on the 3ds too, I have just tried it. We only have a 2ds to use, and four different portals.

Go to flynn's ship and speak to wendel (or whoever does the character swap on giants if it's not Wendel), then follow the same procedure as before. We also have trap team, swap force an d superchargers I will try it with also.

Do not use pyrofers tool or any tool not specifically written for imaginators (there isn't any yet that I know of). The protocol is slightly different on these figures and it will corrupt it making it unrecoverable. I have a creation crystal that is dead because of this, it starts to read then fails, it offers you the option to recover but this fails also and it goes into a boot loop showing the base element picture. I have tried recovering it using the 3ds method but it doesn't work, the game just says that the figure is not for this game.

Interesting.

I wonder if Activision had planned ahead and did some trickery to 'defeat' the earlier known editors.

Only to have it all undone by their own game. :D

In Giants, Hugo (you know, one of the main NPCs of the franchise) is the character who manages Skylanders. If you just tried it, how the heck could you forget that?

So... when we already know that a save editor can be made, compatible with non-Xbox Portals, why isn't that already done? Just have a full-blown save editor so you can just change the Class (Or full reset, if preferred), like with PKHeX for Pokemon save editing?

(I know I'm hardly one to talk, as I'm only good at testing things; I can't code worth diddly, as much as I wish I could) The Smash Bros. and Pokemon support is naturally FAR larger, but it's still surprising that this mostly-unique gameplay (using figures) is so under-worked on.

I'm curious about one thing, even if I guess the answer is obvious: does resetting a Crystal also erase experience and gold?
It wouldn't really be a problem, since I would gladly replay the various levels to get my new characters to the levels they require to use the different gear but I'd still ike to know.

Thanks!

It most likely just resets the editable portion of the tag back to a default value (all 0s most likely). It doesn't know exactly what to overwrite since obviously it pre-dated Imaginators, so being that selective is very unlikely.

Alternatively, it might just "corrupt" a certain part of the tag which the game then doesn't recognize, so it assumes it is empty. I'm sure the game has self-correcting code that sees something it doesn't recognize and corrects it (and the only thing you can assume then is empty).

I believe that the way a reset works is that it erases all the information except for the key that identifies the figure. Once a new or reset figure is brought into a game they work in, usually the information that that figure needs is written onto it. Why do you think reset Skylanders go through their magic moment again? It’s because the game needs to rewrite the gameplay data to them.
