i play them twice, first on normal for the story and some fun then on nightmare for actual gameplay. im there with you nightmare is where the fun is but i have to remind myself. this game is for kids, it has to be easy for them. having there figures die just turns them off from playing the game so normal mode is really easy mode and nightmare is normal mode. i would like to see more challenge out of the game as even nightmare mode seems super easy at times but i just dont see them doing that any time soon.

I don't like it to begin with. I'm not good at videogames, and I really only play higher difficulties when there's actual challenge (like Bayonetta on Infinite because you have to rely on items to extend your counters instead of Witch Time and strategy matters), and lemme tell ya, increasing enemy damage and health is fake challenge. It just takes longer to beat and in Nightmare Chef Pepper Jack's case is horribly designed.
I like to take the skylanders I want and just have some chill fun, not have to solo Hex, Bat Spin and some other easy to master characters just to get through a chapter.

I always beat the game on nightmare , but skylanders nightmare is pretty dull to be honest . They just up the power and health of enemies which just results in a slower grind and a " take 1 hit = your dead" type situation .
So I actually enjoying playing on an easier setting more. If they put more effort into nightmare mode , e.g. More enemy spawns with slight power booster speed boosts ( instead of just maxing the damage output of the regular enemies ) , nightmare would feel like a better/ different experience .

I liked how they added new attacks to the bosses in Trap Team's nightmare mode. Enemies were damage sponges but it was still a lot of fun. |

They did for a few, Chef Pepperjack removing the steak in the final phase comes to mind. The rest either had faster or different patterns.
I don't play Skylanders for caution though. Cheap hits ARE everywhere, especially with the camera sometimes so far back you don't see it coming. The majority still has good tells, but there are soooo many with hurtboxes bigger than they're supposed to be, lost count of how many times a Painyatta got me despite me being nowhere near the particle effect.

You clearly haven't gotten enough surprise bops in the head from some enemies then, Snot Snatchers can fall off the pits they love so much
Oh yeah you also can't even play Trigger Happy or the other glass cannons the fun way, anything destroys them too quick and charging attacks before getting aggroed just makes it slow.

Nope. Why should I? I play the game with new Skylanders that don't have upgrades or a great amount of health, I wouldn't be able to play it with them at all!

I enjoyed playing it with SWAP Force.
Being able to switch difficulty at any time motivated me to try it. But it's just not my cup of tea, and SuperChargers proved it even more. For me it's Medium until Story Mode is finished and then always Hard.

I do mine on Nightmare with spammy ranged attack characters like Gear Shift as I rarely get hit to notice much of a difference. I remember Giants being really hard for me as I tried to complete the game with just a Hex. Then I switched to Stealth Elf and it wasn't as hard. I guess it really depends on who you are using and how well you are with them I guess.

I prefer to have fun on medium/normal difficulties ( Skylanders is one of the few series' where easy is too easy for me ), though I tend to keep Swap Force on hard...hopefully Nightmare is available at the start & difficulty can be changed on the fly in Imaginators. Difficulty choice is one area VV does way better than TFB...IMO the only parts that honestly feel cheap on Nightmare in SF & Superchargers are the spinning enemies ( always hate them regardless of difficulty...****ing cheap invincibility periods ) and the vehicle bosses ( The Darkness just plain sucks in general...on Nightmare it's also incredibly cheap ).

I've completed every game on nightmare, I think i did swap force around 6 times on nightmare (due to time attack and score attack), to the point in that game I could pretty much complete each level with just flashwing and ninja stealth elf, every game that's had a 360/one copy I've done nightmare on both versions, this year I may skip it as there is no achievement for the mode, doing nightmare has become more of a chore sadly and if its not able to be selected from the start/ needs another game save file like it did in trap team (because TFB seems to be lazy with their UI options) then I'll more than likely skip it altogether even if it means missing out on the in game reward.

I recently brought Superchargers Wii U and two figures (Splat and Lava Lance Eruptor, meaning I had four Superchargers to use), and tried playing the game on hard mode using just those characters, without grinding (so they all started on Level 1) and only using two Skylanders per chapter. It was easy enough until Gladfly Glades, where those enemies (with the attack that drew you closer to them) killed me easily, so I switched to Adventurer Mode.
I'll try starting Imaginators on Nightmare though.

Thooose are Snot Snatchers, AmbushFan.
You start seeing a few guys as the bane of your existence when the difficulty gets too high. Any Trog bigger than a Mini, Slobbering Mutticuses, Krankensteins, Mace Majors/Eggsecutioners(why does your hurtbox go behind you), Painyattas and Storm Spawners.

First playthrough on Easy, then I do Nightmare for the achievement/trophy + unlock stuff like the Rainbow Hat in TT, then I stick to Normal for casual playing, or Expert when I'm trying to determine how well a character handles combat compared to others. Nightmare is always somewhat challenging and fun to do, but not to the point where I would always play that mode.

No you're not alone. Up until about Swap Force, I play now exclusively on Nightmare. To me the one thing Skylanders lacks is difficulty, and with 98% of the game being easy as piss for the intended audience, Nightmare "fills that gap" for me. It keeps me on my toes whenever I play the game. Even when I'm using an OP Skylander (Looking at you Bumble Blast ), you can die in a mere 2-3 hits on Nightmare, making the game more interesting.
I'm all for wanting to experience the story, but any mode other than Nightmare is simply boring due to the fact that I know I will never die.

EXACTLY. It's because Nightmare is meant for older players with an army of maxed out skylanders. Also, what does Nightmare have to do with experiencing the story? It doesn't skip cutscenes or dialogue or anything. Why do people keep saying that?

Because if you suck at the game like me, you'll spend over an hour on a single boss just switching Skylanders and after a while stop caring.
That hour on The Darkness felt like a century. Nowhere close to the amazing battle of attrition of trying to beat Father Balder on Infinite and learn all his tricks but not taking enough risks to lose the free revive, to go back to the Bayonetta comparison. In Nightmare you just throw skylanders at the thing until it dies.

The darkness battle sucks thats true, but Trap team kaos is a challenge comparable to any hard boss, just use a ranged character learn to dodge and git gud.

My eyes can git gud but my hand-to-eye coordination is something else entirely. Half my collection went after I started getting tired and missing jump despite clearly knowing the timing. It IS however less cheap than The Darkness, there's no context; the cheapness in Traptanium Kaos is because he requires your full attention and taking advantage of the little time you have to rest, while The Darkness takes out the rest and full attention part and overloads you with **** to keep an eye on. I think I got to the fourth phase of TK before I got tired, The Darkness I wasn't even halfway through his health.

I start by playing on Normal, and then once I've beaten the game, I upgrade my characters and make them really strong, and then I play Nightmare. If I'm having too much trouble on Nightmare and I've tried multiple times to beat a certain level, then I quit. Skylanders is meant to be fun, not frustrating.

Yep, and that's exactly what I am. I'm 21 years old and have been playing Skylanders since the very first game, and I collect them according to the "one of everything" rule. So I now have every single Skylander, minus all the minis and minus chase variants and all series 2 etc. as long as I can play as each character then I'm fine. Wow Pows never intrigued me enough o buy a whole new figure, 14 bucks doesnt warrant a new toy lol But yeah In my opinion, I think people feel that if their story mode experience is intense (you feel like you're gonna die too easily), then they feel like they can't enjoy it casually. Like it doesn't have anything to do with the dialogue or cutscenes, it's more about feeling confident when fighting the game's enemies and bosses, which personally bores me.

What's frustrating for you might be fun for someone else. This is why I think the system Skylanders currently has is good, because the difficulties are very different from each other. Nightmare is a completely different experience to Hard, it can be downright painful for some people to play. I'd actually promote maybe one step up, Hero of Skylands difficulty - where you lock in 2 Skylander per level to beat the story. I'd tackle that anyday.

That's me to a T. Every time I finish the "Story" difficulty, I say "I spent $XXX on this franchise, I'm going to beat Nightmare!", then I fizzle out about 3-4 levels in, not because of difficulty, but boredom. I didn't even lie to myself about SC and only played it like once after I beat it. the idea of having to drive those horrible to control vehicles again turned me off HARD. I'll go through all of them before Imaginators comes out, but for right now? I'll pass on Nightmare. I'd rather they took the more Diablo approach of instead of just making them damage sponges and hit harder, increase the counts substantially so that its less "a tighter" strategy and its more "new strategies". I can hit and run with some characters like Flameslinger, while characters like Lava Lance Eruptor do best with larger number of characters. -Unreall |

Oh yeah, more enemies instead of more stats could definately change it up. I don't remember frame drops even with Doom Challenge's worst, they could definately throw bigger enemy encounters by the difficulty and favor crowd control over raw dps. Of course, putting more trolls isn't going to fix everything, but it's a start where you have to learn what to attack first or who to keep a constant eye on, and would make support enemies like Rage Mages and Spell Punks truly shine.

More enemies instead of damage sponges?
*looks at sky chi attacks That's not gonna work. Maybe a little bit of both. Now that I think about it, more enemies would be better than damage sponges. Isn't that what Giants did? When I went back to play it on nightmare for the first time, I was surprised that the enemies were dying so quickly. I thought; "this game is gonna be a snap!" Then I played the arena battle in Rumbletown. Boy was I wrong. I still 100% completed the game though.

Wel las I typically do (because I think its the direction the game needs to go/run parallel too or sheer length of gameplay) I compare it to Diablo - in Diablo III yes the counts went up, but so did the dmg and health. This game doesn't pack the stacking nature of D3 enough to ramp up to the same extent that Diablo 3 did or City of Heroes for that matter - another prime example, but the idea sticks, instead of doubling how much health and damage a bad guy does, simply forcing you to be more accurate to avoid getting hit more and lasting longer, increase the health by 50%, and double enemies. Things like Chompies will still get ran through, but trolls and greebles will only take a couple more hits, but spawn in a higher number warranting an actual change in strategy instead of perfecting the one from before. It creates a reason beyond 'Paywall' to want more characters. I don't imagine that Painyatta will be strong against a bunch of enemies, while the girl with the bo and the fire for legs might love it. - Unreall |
Bifrost Prismatic Sparx Gems: 10386 |
#41 Posted: 14:14:46 01/09/2016
Pretty much, crowd control strategizing. But say, Pain-Yatta could still handle himself, if he had the stun candy from TT to make enemies run into each other and stay in a nice group for him to wallop. Unless it's a one-trick-pony character, you could find ways with most characters and change how you percieve combat.
