This is just a what if situation.
Say Activision did sell Skylanders to another video game company.
Which company do you think best suits Skylanders?

What new things for the series do you expect if they went to that company?
TfB and VV also have been bought by said company and will still work on the games, since Skylanders is their baby.

As long as the devs stay the same it might be interesting to see how a different publisher would handle the series.
For example it might care more about the collection aspect (still hoping a lot of this year's decisions won't influence future games) or simply pay more attention to the distribution itself. Doubt the actual games would change that much. I'd say it might even benefit the franchise, as we all know Activision tends to get a bit... Greedy when it comes to figures.

I'm thinking the main thing is non-yearly releases.

Well, it depends... On one hand, I feel there would be some better publisher for the game than Activision, who would let TfB or VV do whatever they want... But on the other hand I don't want someone like EA or Konami to buy the series, because then Spyro really would be dead.

I don't know that much about gaming or game developers so I won't comment on that, but I wonder what would happen if a new company didn't make any major changes in terms of gimmicks.
I loved the first games, that's what got me into this series, so if they just went back to that but still kept some of the new mechanics like jumping, skystones overdrive etc then I would be completely happy. But would everyone else? If you watch a television series it's not like they change the style of the show, they just tell a different story each week. Would Skylanders bomb badly if they stuck more to the original formula, or would people keep buying it? I really don't know the answer. Just know that I would keep buying it. |

Honestly, I think Nintendo WOULD be best, but if they did buy it, it'd be ONLY on Nintendo consoles. Perhaps Square Enix?

Square Enix? That's be a dangerous combo. Could have interesting cross-over characters though. Some who would work both as a Skylander and Disney Infinity figure in a Kingdom Hearts Playset. I wouldn't mind a Mog or Red XIII Skylander

Afraid but unless it's Capcom, EA, Ubisoft or Konami, I'd feel a bit better. Only if TFB or VV went along though, but I doubt it - unfortunately the design change would have to be really good to last on someone else's hands because most other companies have waaay greater priotities than making big toy lines every few years.
But hey that'd kill the yearly game plan and give the devs breathing space, that'd be nice.

I don't think Nintendo would be that great. If anyone would forget what makes the series what it is, it's Nintendo. That's what they seem to do best these days.

Oh yes, forgot about yearly release.
That might actually change and it would be a great thing. More content and better games would make me glad to wait more for future titles.

They should do that already. And that'd be great for the other franchises as well as it would give collectors more time to get the figures. They might even sell a bit more for each game.

Acti is tip of the iceberg compared to some real greedy companies out there. They also took less dumb risks, ironically.
Some Sony-owned(I might be doing a stupid on game industry terms) company wouldn't be too bad, they'll want a bite of Toys to Life eventually. Problem is Atlus and Squeenix would be the most likely picks and they go from great to greedy and back to great when you least expect it.

Well, I'll only say this: I also wouldn't want the games to start being published by Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo. Because then the games would be exclusive to their consoles... And that wouldn't be fair to anyone who plays the games on only one of the three. As for the yearly releases... I guess they really do kind of hinder the games in a way, don't they...? Maybe at least give them a few extra months of development time, like have 'em released just in time for Christmas or whatever other holidays or something?

This question falls under the category of : deal with it when the time comes...I'd rather deal with REAL issues on the franchise. I'm of the opinion that if they do sell the franchise it will be long after it has jumped the shark sales wise.

If we paid attention to 'real' issues only we wouldn't have much discussion here. A giant chunk of the forum is just fun speculation. Acti can also end up in a messy lawsuit and have to ditch a good IP to not go bankrupt or something, you never know.

I say Bandai Namco they could really care well with their game content, figures maybe creating a exclusive arcades machines for skylanders which was begin before and they have even their own Toy to Life game based of Kamen Riders called Kamen Riders: SummonRide which is like SuperChargers with 4 Player coop. |

Sorry to burst anybody's fantasy bubble in this thread, but Toys to Life is on a drastic decline and what was once a golden goose laying eggs is no more. The novelty has worn off, people are tired of the cash grab, and the market is oversaturated. Disney is done too with their Infinity franchise...Marvel and Star Wars were their aces...they have nowhere to go but down even if they do manage to squeak out another Infinity game next year. Buying into Toys to Life is the worst decision any company can make right now. |

If Activision were to cut Skylanders loose, I have a feeling that Toys for Bob would go along as part of the package. With that being said, I'd be all for Toys for Bob going home. Originally they published under Accolade, which was bought out by Infogrames in 199 and who is currently known as Atari. Call me old school, but having the Atari logo on Skylanders would really work for me.

how funny would it be for insomniac to make a skylanders game? if they did spyro would be back home.
to be honest i wouldnt mind if sony picked them up. if i was them i would focus alot more on the game vs having 50+ characters per game.( i say have 20 figures but 3-4 times the story, making characters take up alot of development time.) drop the game on wii and wii u ( yea i know alot of people here play on those consoles but i feel there holding it back a bit) maybe go back to pc. and make the game a little bit more grown up. still make it so 5 year olds can play this but add more complex layers in it to give older players the feeling that this isint just another kids game. a deeper more serious story and jokes that have double meanings would help with that alot ( aka a dirty joke that adults will get but kids wont). there are many directions this game can go, if they do it right this can easily be the next mario, as in making spin off games like racing games, sports, party and most the other stuff you see mario in now. |
