This look like it could go two ways, be terrible, or be really good.

Not really.
The original premise was a short film titled "Pixels", showing 8 bit characters destroying NYC. The Creator of that is a producer for this movie, and it's based on his short film. The ones we see in the trailer are the only ones he used in the short film as well.

Pac-Man is in it so it's a guaranteed masterpiece.

I'm cautiously optimistic. I'm not all that sure if a short film like that will translate into a feature film with a plot but I'm still looking forward to it. And I still think Adam Sandler can be funny and capable of good films.
