I hope Spotlight and Blackout can do the double-tap jump flight thing, if they don't wasted opportunity acti! but they should have added flying for Scratch,Flashwing, and Sunburn through double tap but at least no more move wasting just to fly anymore so that's a good thing right? of course it is

Yes, getting rid of the fly upgrades is a great thing. I hope they give this opportunity to some of the other winged characters that can't fly (particularly the ones you mentioned), in Skylanders 5.

I would say there are three cathegories of flyers: the ones that fly, the ones that hover all time long and the ones that should be able to fly but they don't. Please note that I haven't include the villains in the list since I haven't catch them alll yet.
A) Characters that fly: 1) Spyro (it's miniversion, spry, is also able to fly) 2) Cynder 3) Whirlwind (it's mini version, breeze, is also able to fly) 4) Drobot (it's mini version, drobit, is also able to fly) 5) Sonic Boom 6) Dune bug 7) Swarm: Only for a limited amount of time 8) Jet Vac: Only for a limited amount of time. You can't fly over water. It's mini verison can also fly. 9) Knight Light 10) High five: Only for a limited amount of time. 11) Warnado 12) Bat: Only in bat form 13)Gill grunt: He doesn't really fly, he just gets propelled by the water of it's bag, but well some people lists him as a flyer. 14) Chopper Characters that should be able to fly, but they don't 1) Sunburn 2) Flashwing 3) Scratch 4) Spotlight 5) Blackout 6) Blades C) Characters that hover. I don't know them all, but some examples are: 1) Lightning rod 2) Ninjini 3) Hoot loop 4) Hex 5)etc

So, this seems to be a new thing in Trap Team, but flying skylanders have to use the "double tap" method to make them fly...at least this was the case for High Five, Knight Light etc. Does this method now extend to Spyro, Cynder and others or do you use this new method to make them fly?

Yes, it does. So now Spyro & the other old Skylanders can fly by double tapping so they basically wasted their flight upgrades.

So, what will be interesting is if VV will "adopt" TfB's new "double tap" method. It would be smart if they do, but if they do, they should seriously consider using that "upgrade" for different powers. That may actually be on tap for the next game...assuming the reposes that have this "wasted upgrade" can be used. We're used to wasted upgrades...dare you to find water for Double Trouble lol.

The best thing about flying Skylanders is that now they are capable of being hit by lasers on the ground or any other forms of ground-based attacks. However, Traptanium-powered Kaos's deadly circle waves can still harm them, even while flying. Also, it really sucks that Sunburn, Flashwing, and Blades cannot fly. I just hope that Spotlight and Blackout will fly even without flight upgrades.

I don't know about anyone else but after Knight Light came out I kinda would like them to start doing the flight system like his. Lets change up the upgrades just a bit for those who had flight as one of their skills and let anyone who has wings and should fly such as Sunburn have that double jump flight.
It's how things should have been from the start IMHO. |

I totally agree with that.
For those that have TT on IOS, don't you think it'll be great if there is an update that allows Sunburn and the other non fly able Skylanders to actually fly. |

Well, look at birds like the emu, ostrich and penguin. Winged birds, but none of them can fly. It might not be convenient, but it's certainly nonsensical. -Doug

True, those birds don't fly, but if you take a look at their anatomy, you'll see that their wings are small neither have the power and speed of elevating the central body. However, the proportions of some of the characters that are not able to fly seem correct in terms of flying, for instance, blades, sunburn and scratch have very similar dimensions to spyro, cynder and whirlwind. Sunburn is even shown flying in his trailer, and he does fly in the 3ds version of the game. I agree, however that the other three may have an anatomical reason for not flying: 1) Flashwing: She seems to weight a ton or more. HEr wings look even heavier and seem to focus on shooting shards rather than flapping. 2) Spotlight: Her wings have big hollow circles on the middle. Wings need to be hermetic, otherwise they cannot accomploish their function. 3) Blackout: Compare his wings with spyro's, blackout ones seem to be made of "pieces" rather than a single tissue of skin. In that state, the wings will not able to sustain the air below them and therefore elevate the whole body. Just a theory, I may be completely wrong.

However if i recall Flashwing's actual canon story is that she can fly. Bash is in love with her but jealous of her ability to fly and in trying to come up with something like her he developed his rolling. |

I would also say Blades' wings look too heavy to fly, but then again, he pulls off some neat acrobatics... But so does Flashwing (kinda) with her spinning. Also, Sunburn actually flies in his magic moment and character screen (at least in SA/Giants), so his lack of flight is more jarring.

I don't think the the flight upgrades are wasted in the old characters. The new skylanders that just fly through the double tap instead of upgrades , don't seem to be the greatest flyers.
E.g. High five , knight light aren't as good flyers as spyro and whirlwind . The double tap flyers seem to either fly really slow or can't fly for long or their flight isn't very well controlled and hard to turn precisely. I think they've made it so when a character actually upgrades for flight , they fly a lot better . There's exception, obviously they couldn't give swarm the best flight mechanic coz he's a giant and would end up a bit OP

Really? Knight Light flys well for a heavily armed Trap Master. But you're right about High 5.
And Warnado has a flight upgrade but he doesn't speed up very well. |
wild_defender Green Sparx Gems: 465 |
#34 Posted: 12:07:20 27/12/2014
Knight light is decent but is pretty slow, if he was a bit faster he would be amazing .
Warnado isn't the fastest but he has the best control , doesn't need to face a particular direction and has access to a lot of moves while flying , he's actually my favourite flyer. Also one thing upgraded flight abilities do is usually provide "extra defence while flying", something double taps probably don't have . E.g. Warnado natural high defence and then flying does block a lot of attacks . I know a lot of you don't care much for the defence stat , but it does make a noticeable difference .

I was going to ask a question regarding exactly this: does the "double jump" flight also increases your defence? I was playing with Knight Light, yesterday, and noticed a lot of those yellow shield symbols (the ones that appear when an attack is completely blocked), when flying, but I'm not sure it was related to that, or was simply a coincidence. Also, so far I've also noticed, like many of you already pointed out, that flying characters without a proper flight upgrade tend to be slow, less maneuverable when flying, or they simply fly for a short amount of time.

Some upgrade flyers like jet vac and swarm are time limited, while "double taps" like knight light can fly all the time they want, so the upgrade doesn't necessarily means a time advantage.
Regarding the maneuverability on air, I would say high five is the top one, being extremely precise on it's movements (sure, he only flyes for several seconds), not only that but knight light can turn quite easily while flying, while ohters like spyro need to make a wide angle turn in order to change direction. I may agree on the speed side though, knigh light may be quite slow, but I think this is related to the overall character. I guess you have already noticed that but when he walks he's not the fastest skylander. I think Activision realised that the fligh skill should be something inherent to the winged characters while leaving the upgrade develpoment for those special skills for more battle oriented abilities.

Sure, I didn't said that because it was a wrong move. It was quite smart, actually, and makes sense. You cannot have Trap Masters and make them move or fly like they weight the same as a Core. And even then, there are differences (think about Tuff Luck and Wallop, or Fist Bump and Stealth Elf). It's a nice choice, in my opinion, and adds to the uniqueness of those characters.
