Now... to open it up and see how it all works. I do know it runs off of 24 D Cell batteries (which are dead....) - Seems like I might be able to plug it in with a universal AC Adapter.. |

This one will not be sold on eBay (unless my wife does it while I'm sleeping!). I can't imagine how much shipping would cost on this thing (although half that weight was probably in the 24 D cells I took out). I did discover that there's actually a plug on the back for an AC Adapter *and* the Universal AC adapter I've got lying around works perfectly with it. Yay!
After trying to figure out how to get rid of it, the store was given the okay to "Silent Auction" it. The highest bidder only had to pay $1 more than the second highest bidder ("eBay-style"). The money made went to Children's Miracle Network (in this case, Riley's Children's Hospital out of Indy). Officially, the final price was $18, but I felt bad and gave 'em $50. Still a meager amount, but since it's just going to sit there and look pretty (once I determine how it all goes together, that is. ) I need a locking hex key for this bugger though. Grr. |

I need a special type of screwdriver to open it. I just ordered a set of bits from eBay that includes it.
It's my *guess* that when you press a button, it simply plays a video from a SD card and lights up an LED associated with that button. I'd be really impressed if this unit itself actually utilized RFID in any form. I'm inclined to think the figures *would* work in-game. If they don't, it means that a special run of figures were made just for the displays - and that seems silly. Then again, it could be factory rejects inside. Guess I'll find out when my bits arrive from eBay. |

Oh wow, that's a great find. Heck, $18 is amazing, and even at $50 its still a great pick up.
I still regret not getting a Trigger Happy standee from SSA for $25 back when the first game was out ;____;

Wow. So jealous. I would LOVE one of these.
Glad to hear about the money too, good cause and all that I would be tempted to carefully remove the figures and use it as a stand for part of my collection, also replace with normal working portal and use it when playing Lastly, please provide details/photos of what's inside |

Got my kit in today. Popped it open just now and checking things out.
Each of the figures has plastic placeholders glued onto the bottom that make them "click" into the display. The three LightCore figures (Bouncer, Tree Rex and Prism Break) work in-game - the others don't even register. I'd guess they don't have chips, but the other three needed them for the LightCore feature to work. Interesting note, in-game, the figures don't have a Mobile Code - that box is there with the text saying "This is the..." but no code. As I suspected - there's no cool magic involved here - there's an SD card (barely visible without opening the case - can't believe I didn't notice it before) on the side of the LCD screen. There's 10 video files on the card, each corresponding with a button and the 10th just a muted version of the trailer (does it occasionally play on an attract loop? I don't remember)... In theory, I don't see any reason one couldn't put other MPG video files on the SD Card and make it play them... The portal is just a empty shell (a wired Gen 1 portal without the USB cable coming out). The bottom and top appear to be slightly custom, with the top having a hole cut so that the LED can light up the figure and the bottom having a hole cut for a basic power cable to plug into it. The bottom also has four screw holes to attach the portal to the base of the display. There does not appear to be an RFID antenna inside. Each of the spots on the display have a basic power cable ran to them to run an LED so that each figure "lights up" from the base. The three LightCore spots actually have more meat to them - with an attachment that appears to be a tiny RFID antenna - I assume to power the figure's internal LightCore Effect. |

Can I have more details on the "Tiny RFID Antenna"??
There is a whole thread about making lightcores light up for display purposes and I would be interested to know their "official" circuit! Any photos would be great. |

Afraid I won't be much help without tearing one apart (which I don't want to do!)...
There's some kind of circuit board in there, an LED light in the middle of the top and the copper coil/antenna around it... |

Thanks for the photos.
I tried to get one of these on eBay but the bloke didn't accept my offer and it ended up not selling (didn't meet reserve). Don't break it on my account but if ANYBODY else has one and is willing to carefully open it up we could reverse a circuit to power lightcores for display. |

I looked that thing over and under - I don't know if there's really a way to carefully open it...
There's a seam down the center, but it won't budge. I'm guessing it's glued. |

While $200 is a bit pricey, if it has the antennas from above, that would work really well for getting one to take apart and figure out how it works...

Does it have pre-recorded gameplay for characters, or does the portal read the Skylanders?

Post #18 details how it works. No reading figures - pre-recorded video files on an SD card that correspond with the buttons on the front.

I FINALLY got one of these! It even came with the Spyro's Adventure parts and figures. It's only missing the small board on the front, and the power source, but I'm prettu sure Lynx Innovation customer service could help.

It's exactly the same, no pictures to post, except for the Spyro's Adventure figures. The Spyro has a very different paint job compared to the retail version, his wings are more orange and his scales are darker purple.
