How can you tell how many hours a character is played?

You look under stats and it will tell you. I seem to currently have one where the timer is frozen, I am not sure if it is from using the character for too many hours tho.

Which character and how many hours?

it's not always working, some of my characters have several thousend hours of gameplay (and no, i haven't used them for several thousend hours)

Same with mine. It seems that only characters that haven't been used in past games have correct times. I've not seen any of my characters that I used in SA or Giants having correct times.

My Boomer says something like 500000 hours 14 mins and 17 sec. He is frozen with that time. The timer won't go up or down. So I have no idea how many hours are actually put into him, I just know that I could understand a month as I play the games a lot. But when the timer actually stops working I question if I broke the timer or if it's the cap on the character.

I think it depends. At most cases though, the times are correct to me with the majority of my Skylanders (both Series 1 and 2), it's only a few out of my entire collection of approximatively 60 which seems to have this sort of problem.

My Trigger Happy and Gill Grunt (both my first Skylanders with the first game) does both have their good played times (A little less than 200 hours) when Spyro is not with like 10,000 hours when I know it's around the same time than those other two.
