Curious. Does this mean that all the old inventory they had of SSA is being pulled out and any varients hidden in nooks and crannies of the distrobution warehouses are coming to light? I wonder how many varients there truly are.

I'm starting to think the machine operator at the Activision plant started taking drugs - or it's cheaper to make unusual solid color variants rather than painting old figures.

What's interesting is that the first crystal Whirlwind was sold like a month ago and I haven't seen any others. Were these created in any quantity because I was expecting a bit more to be showing up than this. Maybe these are "ultra chase" variants lol.

Also, I'd like to have Activision confirm this is real. Not trying to make the OP angry, just want official confirmation. Cause that's how I roll.

Yes because it's totally believable that we aren't going to see any more series 1 variants. Activision wouldn't be stupid enough to keep trying to force these out just to surprise us.

Not to mention too, given his primary ammo are watermelons, this one makes a little sense so people are likely to believe it (and if you found something cool, wouldn't you post about it?)...either way, simply asking someone in the know will be the best bet.

Bahamut, I was trying to be polite. In this case, while it seems suspicious, I don't have a smoking gun to look at. It's alot harder when you don't know for certain, and activision has been adding some SSA varients lately, though they usually are part of a promo. I was tempted in my 1st post to say "crossing my fingers that this is legit", but I don't like to automatically assume it. Sadly, you may be right about the fig. What I really wish is that they'd post a listing of official varients so people can tell what is what, but then that would just ask for scammers to make them. And they've even got better tools these days too.

I asked Chris at TFB if this is an official variant. When I hear something from him I will let everyone know.

This is probably the best known unofficial Skylanders fansite worldwide.
If we don't hold ourselves to a standard of credibility, then we're pretty much worthless as a fan community.

How did I get it: A buddy of mine working at Activision gave it to me. I highly doubt it will ever makes it way to the shelves, making it that more rare. Kinda like Crystal Clear Whirlwind.

Yeah, if Activision's 3D printer makes it that doesn't make it another variant---it just means you got a custom figure. Oh no--not that conversation again

Matteomax---the answer this board uses to determine if a variant is real is if it is in mass production and going to stores---someone dorking around with a 3d printer at Activision/TFB/VV doesn't cut it.

I still in fact doubt Crystal Whirlwind simply because I haven't seen anymore pop up...I think it's a good idea to re-evaluate that variant's status in our eyes using this criteria.

FYI, I also seen some Crystal Clear Whirlwinds and can confirm there are more of them.

I highly doubt Activision keeps a packaging machine in their offices by the way

By saying "found," other hunters expect they could find it too. But as a special gift (like for example the golden Fire Kraken), it's much less likely to sit on shelves at TRU or Walmart.

Mullet, your post had the unfortunate luck of coincidentally appearing at the same time as a discussion about pseudo-fraudulent "custom" figures on Ebay. That discussion upset quite a few members. That may have increased members' suspicions of new variants.

Spyro has been out for over 2 years, which begs the question, why are these weird variants (crystal Whirlwind, red camo, etc.) only now appearing? Are they even REAL? Where are they coming from?

It's not that we question you or want to appear unwelcoming - far from it. But not everything on the internet is true either.

If that can clear things out, I'm not looking to sell it.

If I had to guess, I'd say Activision had been sitting on this for some time. The box has some signs of age. I don't know why they were never released, but they seem to be giving them to employees, kinda like the employee only editions.

I can post more pics if you guys want, but there's nothing I can really do to change your mind if you're convinced it's fake.

This is not a custom job, there a more of them in hands of other Activsion employees. I doubt prototypes would make their way to the packaging states. They might or might no make their way to the stores. I'm sorry I'm not Activision and cannot give you this answer. I just know some exists and some other boxes of them could exist.

Fair enough, Reimu. I like you and believe you to be genuine, so I'll bite.

Whenever something becomes a cash cow, it becomes more serious. The more popular something becomes, the more attention it gets, and consequently, the more serious it often becomes.

Once upon a time, Skylanders was newish, and there were only a few figurines available. It was a joyous time. Scalping was minimal. Custom and Replica Skylander fabrication was in its infancy and not really a factor.

That proverbial honeymoon is over, more or less. The Skylanders community now is inundated with characters, reposes, and a plethora of variants, some rare than others. In that context, we MUST be diligent, observant, skeptical, and yes ... perhaps sometimes even serious. Otherwise, the deluge of fakes and replicas and con-jobs threatens to undermine the credibility of the franchise and its products. Now, we're not law enforcement, and there are obvious limitations to what we can actually control as a community. But the one major thing that we can absolutely do, collectively, is commit to squashing false claims and bad information that stems from rumors, hearsay, and unconfirmed reports.

On the other hand, we still are prone to having fun and being light-hearted, such as the "PURPLE EYE BRAWL" thread ... which, ironically, I think you asked to be closed/locked.

FYI, a lot of our users aren't big fans of "employee exclusive" Skylanders, for apparent reasons.

Whether its real or fake, its still cool looking! Too bad we wont get one.
