I've been saying this for six months. As long as they can get this "x" kind of sales with only expending "y" effort, they will keep doing what they've always done. Time to vote with your wallets. I'm reducing my footprint by 40% on this game, and only buying when there's sales.

im buying on sales only now and dont buy any variants.... also if the skylanders4 have no online gaming, then i am done with skylanders.

Skylanders is about fun and not online play

Trouble is, without online play, its less fun than it could've been.

Grim is correct. Little Kids playing Call of Duty online has already caused to many molestations.

Accept with a new engine they'd have to recreate those levels from scratch (unlike Giants, where they could use the old level and just tweak it). The inability to import levels from the older games is also the real reason heroics went away - they'd have to recreate every single one of them.

I know that, but

Quote:
And wouldn't you rather they spend that time making new levels (like the new side missions), as opposed to just remaking the ones you've been playing for two years already?

I'd rather have more content for use with my Skylanders and with remaking old levels, they wouldn't need to redesign them or anything. Just give them new graphics and tweak them a bit for the new engine. I said right there: new levels with the same thing would be nice. But that realistically wouldn't happen. They'd need to rebuild the AP levels from scratch, yeah, but they wouldn't need to really make anything new at least. There are fifty Heroics, but those are four levels, and they aren't even that large compared to some of the ones in SF. I'm more annoyed with this because they have removed a huge part of what made the location pieces appealing with SF than because the levels are gone now anyway. At least with old Skylanders not unlocking Heroics in Giants, they still worked as characters, but now the adventure pieces just act the same as magic items. I haven't picked any of them up after registering them. If they're going to essentially botch the pieces, there's not much point in keeping them compatible with the games. Having the pieces unlock the level they did two years ago is much better than just having them all throw down cannonballs, which my Anvil Rain already does.

Quote:
You can skip the movie as soon as the level is loaded.

I know that the cutscenes before a level are loading it, I'm talking about the unskippable cutscenes within the level. And there are a LOT of them. And it gets frikin tiring. Plus, the dialogue you can skip? It takes so long to wait for Skip to appear, it's almost not worth it. Listening to Rufus' dialogue every time I want to start the game isn't fun and there isn't any good reason for it to exist... It's probably not hiding a load screen, since everything in the hub works right away, and if it is then they should have just extended the time the load screen was up for instead of making you listen to the same dialogue every time.

And just because its a kids game, doesn't mean we can't point it out if it glares us. Worried about kids talkin to strangers, just add an option to turn off voice chat (or block communications as a whole) or just simply disable your kids from playing Online with Xbox Live settings.

Simply put, just change your online settings for your kids account. Not a great excuse for a lack of online play, "a kids game" isn't a magic phrase.

Sure it is, it's their 100% excuse box. Play it back like a recording. A parrot. Who says chat even need to be involved? Just the ability to play online with other people is a huge win...and one apparently Disney thinks isn't going to scar our precious children. This basic thought that adults can't manage our children is pretty insulting too.

Cmon, what a LAME option from a developer in this day and age to FORCE movie type dialog when our poor children just want to play the darn thing. Now THIS would cause scarring. Has anyone been able to skip this in ANY version of the game? VV, I expected more than this.

That's sad and all, but 1. they can design it so chat isn't supported and 2. Acti can't police the world with its products.

But who protects the consumer of Skylanders; we are getting molested with prices and no additional features!

Well that's kind of a silly reason; of course they're gonna meet strangers. Anyone who plays online plays with strangers unless you play with someone directly from your friend's list.

They easily have a few options they could roll with:

-Online play with voice chat (you can either turn it on or off): This would allow everyone who's been asking about it since the first game came out to experience play with other people. With voice chat, you could direct them to do something, and without you wouldn't hear them and they wouldn't hear you. Alternatively, they could have a bunch of premade phrases like Universe had.

-Online play with no voice chat: Simple really. No talking to anyone, no one gets hurt or possibly talked to by a predator.

-Online play with friends only (Voice chat an option too): This would ensure that the person is more familiar to the player. They'd also have the voice chat option but not necessary either.

There's no real reason to not have online capabilities either in this day and age. Especially considering that the Wii U, 360, Xbone, PS3 and PS4 all have great online options in tons of other games. And yes it still kind of annoys me that Super Mario 3D World has no online play.
But Skylanders? That's a game that was almost designed to play with other players. Especially things like the battle arena.

I'm playing Wii U version, occasionally when starting the game or returning to Woodburrow from a level, a "Press X to skip" will appear when I mash the A button like its telling me that my caveman antics aren't going to make that dumb fox talk faster.

This is also one of my qualms with the game. Every single time you go back that dialogue is there. I don't think it's necessary either, they could have just had him say it when you talk to him.

If they had unlimited zots* to work with, sure. I mean, more content would be great. But given zots are limited, I think they are better spent on new areas rather than rehashed ones.
I mean, the design might be there already, but that only saves a few zots -all the resources have to be made from scratch. And it's worth mentioning that those levels all featured unique elements (like the memory card game) that would have to be recreated too.
I think that using the AP pieces as magic items are a fair compromise - the effect is fun for kids and it's easy to implement. And obviously, if you want to play the levels you can boot up the old games.

Don't get me wrong - in a perfect world I'd love to see more gameplay in the core game and all the add-on levels supported too. But given the financial realities of game development, I figure it's unfair to expect them to spend heaps recreating areas that won't drive much new revenue and only a small number of percentage of their players will get to play.
And to be fair, can you name any other game whose DLC levels work in subsequent titles? Given the situation I'm pleased and grateful that they even worked in Giants.

* A 'zot' is a fictional unit of measurement, created by Bioware to represent the combined development time, testing time and finance used to create or add a feature to a game. For example, adding a new companion might take 20 zots, adding a new companion with romance might cost 30 zots, while adding a romance to an existing character might take 7 zots.
They used this when describing, for example, why they made the characters with romances in Dragon Age II bisexual, rather than adding separate straight/gay characters (because the zot cost was much, much lower).

I would personally introduce branching paths in the story/game and work on content first, followed by the ability to battle online. I'd like a tournament mode when they introduce it. If they do this and tweak the points system and re-introduce some level of character "investment" like heroics and I'll be happy.

Online simply isn't going to happen with Skylanders. Like it or not, yes you can disable chat but many, many parents don't have the first clue on how to do that. The last thing they want is to appear on the local news about some kids that had inappropriate things said to them on chat. They won't even mention that chat can be disabled. The damage will be done, and other less in-tune parents will see the game as a haven for weirdos they don't want to expose their child to. I mean, people will flip out over the most avoidable of problems.

Skylanders is all about physical interaction, hence the figures and portal. They want to avoid the whole idea of virtual things. They want kids sitting there together swapping out figures on the portal in the same room.

I personally would enjoy online, I could play with some of my local friends, and my son could play with his friends. I strictly limit Internet interaction for my kids, the only games they play online are things like Mario Kart where communication is almost non-existent and mostly for Nintendo stuff which is heavily moderated. It's part of why I like the WiiU, I can be confident that anything they see has been through the Nintendo filter - which is very thorough. They love Minecraft, but I put my foot down on getting them the PC version (which they wanted), we went with the 360 version and they are only allowed to play multiplayer split screen offline. But, I am far more capable of figuring this out than the average parent. I know how to find out what they are doing and how to turn it off or limit it.

We need about 30% more game or 25% fewer figures...they need to pick one.

There's plenty of people which will prefer to get the Skylanders, and plenty of others which will prefer the game adventure-wise, or both. As of me, I'm a little bit of both, I like to get some Skylanders, but not too much, mostly my favorites but I also really like when I can get several things to do during adventures with the Skylanders I own.

However, if I would choose, I would like more in-game content for the reason that there would be more to do with each of my Skylanders, which would be more interesting to me and would not make me obliged to get too much of those too. But I don't mind getting a decent collection either, if I like them, I just don't want to retrive myself with too much to be obliged to enjoy the game at a minimum.

There's an easy solution to that. Just because a game is online, doesn't mean that it has to support open lobbies. Multiplayer can be restricted to invite only. I believe this is how Minecraft works on Xbox 360. Also, as mentioned earlier, there are parental restrictions that can be placed on a child's account.

That is the magic word. 5 kids that played online Cod have gotten molested. I don't think Activision wants any more of those

Playing online doesn't open a magical portal that allows strangers to enter a child's room. In order for these events to occur, arrangements had to have been made for them to meet. If anything, the absence of online multiplayer encourages these kinds of meetings, since you have to physically be in the same room to play together. Online multiplayer eliminates this requirement, and provides less incentive for meeting together.

Trouble is, without online play, its less fun than it could've been.

you do know that little kids would meet strangers?

There's an easy solution to that. Just because a game is online, doesn't mean that it has to support open lobbies. Multiplayer can be restricted to invite only. I believe this is how Minecraft works on Xbox 360. Also, as mentioned earlier, there are parental restrictions that can be placed on a child's account.

Simple solution is filters that don't allow phone #'s or email along with swearing and profanity and then possibly an age limitation that only allows selected word chat. Sort of like how Wizard101's chat filters work.
