The Definitive Skylanders PvP Tier List: Swap Force Edition [STICKY]

A new sequel means a new tier list!
This is a collaborative project where anyone can contribute to create a complete and definitive Tier List for Arena Battle Mode in Skylanders Swap Force.
As before, I’ve copy+pasted the final ‘Giants tier list for us to use as our starting point. The rest is up to you guys to discuss where each Skylander, old and new, should be placed or moved until we can make this Tier List as complete and accurate as it can possibly be. With all the new game mechanics added in Swap Force, there will likely be many changes to the playing field that we’ll need to discover, so we have a lot of work ahead of us!

---

>> NOTICES - Please read! <<

  • A lot of properties of the old pre-Swap Force Skylanders such as damage numbers and attack speeds have dramatically changed. Many of their Tier positions from ‘Giants aren’t correct any more, so to help us re-arrange them so we can start putting the new Skylanders in, the S Tier has been condensed down to the basic set of the most overpowered Skylanders, with the rest moved down to the (now very bloated) A Tier. We now need to focus our efforts on the A Tier by test-battling all of its Skylanders against each other and moving those Skylanders down or up tiers where appropriate. Remember that a Skylander only qualifies for S Tier if it can compete with some of the overpowered Skylanders that are currently in the new S Tier.
  • While we’re doing this, any new information about the new Skylanders in Swap Force is appreciated as always, but keep in mind that we may not be moving the new Skylanders into tiers much until we’ve re-arranged most of the old Skylanders first.

  • It’s currently undecided how we will account for the Swapping mechanic of the “Swaplanders” in the tier list. The TEMPORARY MEASURE is that we will only be making listings for all four upgrade combinations of the MATCHING top/bottom halves only (IE: Wash Buckler and Blast Zone but not Wash Zone or Blast Buckler) until we can establish a better method of dealing with the combination mechanic. I am open to all suggestions for how this could be done!

---

Post Guide:
1st Post: Information
2nd Post: Tier List (All versions of the game)
3rd Post: Unsorted Skylanders list (All versions of the game)
4th Post: Unused
5th Post: Unused
6th Post: Unused

---

How Things Work:

  • This Tier List only applies to PvP / Arena Battle Mode and no other modes!
  • There is currently only one list for all versions the game. Separate tier lists for certain versions will be made if any mechanical differences between versions are discovered.
  • There is an individual listing for both upgrade paths of each “Series” of every Skylander, as well as any variants that impact on gameplay. Series 2 variants are marked with “S2”. Series 3 variants are referred to by their full names.
  • Giants and Swaplanders are (currently) included on the same list amongst the other Skylanders.
  • LightCore variants, Legendary variants and colour variants (eg: Dark Spyro) are not listed. Assume they are in the same tier as their normal variant.
  • IMPORTANT: Skylanders are not listed by order of power within each tier, so there’s no such thing as "upper" or "mid" B Tier, etc. The Skylanders are actually arranged in each tier by element groups in the following order: Magic>Tech>Earth>Air>Fire>Water>Life>Undead. Within each element, the Skylanders are listed as follows: Original Skylanders>Series 2 Newlanders>Giants>Series 3 Newlanders>Swaplanders
  • This Tier List assumes all characters to have completed an equal number of Heroic Challenges, the effects of which being otherwise negligible.

---

HOW TO POST IN THIS THREAD:
When deciding in what tier a Skylander should go in this thread, we like to be thorough, so simply posting things like “Character X should be in Y Tier. Character P should be in Q Tier. Etc” isn’t enough.
Remember that the Tiers are not just a "power rating" of sorts that shows how good people think a Skylander is: To qualify for being in a particular Tier, the Skylander has to be able to compete with most of the other Skylanders in that Tier, whilst also not being able to compete with some of the Skylanders in the Tier above. Only after you're sure of these two things should you propose what Tier a Skylander should be in!

If you want to help out in this thread, a good post should do the following:

  • Back up your suggestion about a character’s tier with a reason. For example, you could use an experience you had while playing with or against that character.
  • Tell us what combat strategy you are using with/against that character: What attacks are you using, how are you using them, and why does it work? How is the opponent’s character attacking you in return, and is it effective?
  • Compare that character with the other characters in the nearby tiers! Tell us why your character is as good as the other characters in the tier you are suggesting, better than the characters in the tier below, and maybe even why the character is not good enough for the tier above.
  • Finally, do not be afraid to tell us about what is wrong with a character as well! A character can be good enough to be in a certain tier even despite a few disadvantages.

Some Battle/Research Tips:

  • Think about the skill level of your opponent relative to you. Ideally, you should try to ensure your opponent is as good at the game as you are, and that neither of you have anything to prove or disprove.
  • Ensure that the competing Skylanders are equal in level, and either have no Heroic Challenges completed or all Heroic Challenges completed.
  • You may wish to avoid having power-ups, food or even Arena Hazards.
  • If you want completely fair ‘tests’ for research purposes, then make most things random such as the arena, what Skylanders are used and which player controls which Skylander.
  • EDIT: From Earth-Dragon: "My suggestion for anyone who really wants to make a good list is to avoid testing and recommending on your favorite characters. I hardly give my 2 cents on Terrafin or Gill Grunt cause I can't tell if I want Gill Grunt higher because he really should be higher or if I just like him."

FINAL DISCLAIMER: Of course, these tier lists, as with any tier list for any game, are only meant to be taken as guidelines for the purely objective ability of each Skylander in an imaginary situation where the two opponents are of equal skill. In a real life situation, different people have different skills, strategies and play styles, so you should always remember that it’s these factors that ultimately decide the effectiveness of each Skylander you use. You should go by your personal play styles and use the Skylanders you like instead of going by everything on these tier lists!

Why don't we call the top parts and the bottom parts different names?
For example:
Wash/Path 1
Wash/Path 2
Buckler/Path 1
Buckler/Path 2

@weebbby: Thank you very much for those upgrade path names! I've updated the Unsorted Skylanders list with them.

@Spyro7850: If it happens that we end up adopting a system where top and bottom halves are placed in tiers seperately, then it is likely we will use that as the naming system. smilie

Say, maybe to make it easier to find new characters, we leave out all older Characters, and just link to the Giants thread. I.e. only characters introduced in SF are listed, along with new S3/2.
I hope to contribute once I buy SF.
Btw, if it's any help, IGN's Skylander wiki already has upgrade lists for some of the new Swappers (Free Ranger, for example). http://www.ign.com/wikis/skyla...orce/Skylanders

This would work if the old Skylanders were in the same tiers in this game as they were in 'Giants, but that's just not how Skylanders sequels work: They don't just add new Skylanders - they always re-tune all of the old ones too. Certain characters and attacks that were strong before become weak in the new sequel, and vice versa. As such, a complete re-shuffle of the Tier list is necessary.

I expect Roller Brawl will be S tier for PVP as it's nearly impossible to get away from her charge and she can also summon a shield of spinning blades that will be hitting you while she's charging you to death. AND she has potentially very high crit chance. I forget the path name for this off the top of my head, can look it up later.

Thank you Mrmorrises and ZapNorris for those upgrade path names. They've been added to the Unsorted Skylanders list.

@matrix and GoingBoing: I have read in other threads that Night Shift is considered OP for a couple of reasons, but this news alone isn't helpful in this thread: I need someone to tell me exactly why Night Shift is overpowered in the specific context of PvP. What attacks and strategies are used with him and why do they work?

@Friendzie: This information's a start, so thank you. To properly place Roller Brawl in a tier I need some information and comparisons regarding how she actually performs against the current S Tier Skylanders.

I've noticed some changes in the following characters:

Swarm - He's been nerfed; his Attack 1 comes out slower, and his Attack 3 is a little slower, but his Attack 2 is much faster.
Drobot - His Attack 1 is slower and I think it causes less damage.
Jet-Vac - His Attack 1 is MUCH faster and his Attack 3 is also faster.

Doesn't call for a real tier change, but I guess it's a start.

I've done testing on Free: Blade Path and Ranger: Lightning Nova Path. He can dish out serious combo damage with the Slicing Storm. He can take out Low S tiers and High A tiers. The strategy for him is to stun your opponent with the Lightning Eyes until you close in for a "Storm" of melee. A more defensive option is to use the Tornado to continuesly keep foes at bay while you can retreat

One thing I have noticed myself while playing in single player (on the Wii version) is that Gill Grunt can no longer use his water hose attack and his jetpack at the same time. You have to stop using one ability to use the other.

Egonaut, all old information is virtually null and void. Damage numbers, attack speeds, heroic stats, and hit point totals have all been adjusted. In addition, all the arenas have changed and we now have jumping for all characters, so another level of actual skill has been added. Things need to be taken back to ground level.

That is my strong suggestion for where to start.

From looking around on forums & youtube, I think this is due to the upgrade on his bottom half which allows him to come back to life (even though you don't get revived with full health). If you take the underbat path, it allows you to be revived twice & with more health. Based on this, I'd say that it's only his bottom half which is op, although it seems that for a melee attacker, his punches do have a considerable range. Hope this helps.

Good to see you again, Earth Dragon! smilie

I must admit I've been having thoughts myself about whether or not we should wipe the tiers and start over.

For the moment i'm thinking I might leave the thread in the state it's in now, where people seem to be just brainstorming and throwing out little ideas for things they've noticed. The situation may work itself out from here, but if it doesn't then we can have talks about starting the tier list again from scratch.

---

Update about Gill Grunt: It appears I was wrong about him not being able to operate his hose attack and jetpack at the same time. It appears you can use them both only if you activate the jetpack first and then activate the hose afterwards. You cannot turn the jetpack on and off at will while using the hose like you could before.

I have discovered something new about Stealth Elf: When she uses Abroreal Acrobatics, the game now acknowledges what direction she was originally facing and causes her to do forward summersaults, backflips and sideways summersaults as necessary depending on what direction you move relative to what direction she was originally facing. I have discovered that she moves slightly faster performing sideways summersaults and backflips than she does performing forward summersaults! (This is on the Wii version.)

@Sky Airglow: If you look at the Unsorted Skylanders list (third post), you will see that upgrade path names are needed for about 50% of the new Skylanders added in Swap Force. If you could provide those then that'd be really great. smilie

I think we should rearrange the original 48 according to their nerfs and buffs before we add in new characters to the list.

I feel like this would be the easiest:most accurate route. Adjust current Skylanders by how they have changed, then factor in the new ones. We can still observe new ones while we're at it, but I feel like we should focus on the older ones first. I have been playing with mainly new ones, so sorry about that. I'll try to test more old ones when I can, though it'll be hard to keep track of it for levelling and quests.

I heard that S2 Hex's Skull Buddy only does 80 damage a shot now. We should talk about that smilie

Anyway, I expect Honey Path Bumble Blast will end up high-tier. The damage he does is very good and he's hard to escape from, because his bees seek you out and have huge shot range. The honey glob just accentuates that when you're able to use it- AND slows down enemies, making it EVEN HARDER to get away. And even on their own honey glob/beehive mine are good supporting attacks that do nice damage(a beehive mine does 60 damage). The honey glob barely needs to be held down to have it charged up, and launches three bee projectiles, while doing the 45 damage from the glob itself and slowing your enemy! He's kind of slow and I feel like he's more focused on residual damage(the latter might just keep him from S-Tier), but he really makes up for it. His HP/armor isn't too shoddy either. I haven't bought his Soul Gem yet because I didn't manage to find it, but it's apparently supposed to automatically launch bees when enemies are close, which will probably be a nice upgrade! Really, the best thing about Bumble Blast, that makes him such a prime candidate for high-tier placement, is the fact he is so difficult to get out of reach from. His Bee-Zooka range is really insane and tracks enemies down ruthlessly and you need to see it to believe it. His other attacks push him even further because they work great with it.
Haven't tried other path yet, no comment on that. It just seemed a bit pointless because his Bee-Zooka attack is already solid at the start, and I felt that upgrading the honey would be more beneficial because you kinda only use it to make the bees do more damage without honey path's upgrades. It only does 17 per glob without the damage boost from its path... Still, it's got a decent chance to land a solid spot.

I made observations about Tail Path Slobber Tooth on another thread: he just can't seriously compete in PVP. His standard attack is just that, a standard melee attack that's outclassed by a lot of others(maybe I'm wrong on it being greatly outclassed, but still, it's rare that just a good melee move can make a character useful). His biting attacks are pretty much worthless. His tail ground-slam rock-shock wave WOULD be a good, powerful attack, but it makes him move slowly, doesn't launch fast enough, can be easily avoided, and is interruptable by hitting him with an attack, so he has to set that up again to use it. He's not as bad as some bottom of the barrel paths were in past games(his attacks are coherent), but I don't see him making it past second-last tier, if he even reaches there, with the buffs everyone has gotten.
I haven't tried his other path yet either, but considering that the eating moves are PVE-focused, I can't imagine that path would match up even to the tail one, which is sure to end up near the bottom.

I haven't upgraded any of the SF fully with Quests and L20 yet, besides my LightCore Warnado, though... Still, there are some things that are very clear without even having to go into PVP(don't worry, I did make these observations based on PVP though!).

By the way... Another +1 for having this stickied. ^D^ b I messaged the admin.

P.S. sorry this post is kinda a paragraph mess.

@Arc of Archives: Your post isn't a "paragraph mess", it's fantastic! Your explanations are very thorough and exactly the sort of thing we find useful in this thread.

I would definately agree with your first point: Any information about the new Skylanders is always helpful, but if we want to place them in tiers accurately then it is more important that we re-evaluate the positions of the old Skylanders first so that we have something to compare the new Skylanders to. At a later time I may end up mentioning this outright in the opening post.

Your suggestions about Bumble Blast / Honey Tree and Slobber Tooth / Seismic Tail are sound. I will put them forward as possible tier placements to await comments from others, but to remain on the side of caution I think we should consider placing them in the lower of the two tiers you have suggested for each by assuming that other Skylanders will be generally be buffed enough to keep them there.

@Rickorio: Thanks! I will add this path name to the Unsorted Skylanders list.
EDIT: So wait, does this mean to say that Smolderdash's too paths are called Sun Forger and Sun Forged?

EDIT: @warbot100: If you meant that question in terms of what path is better for PvP, then the answer is we don't know yet, but you're welcome to join the discussion!
If you were asking that question in terms of what path is better generally, then you are not meant to ask that in this thread: Your question would be better suited to one of the Upgrade Path Recommendations threads, of which there are at least a couple floating about in the Swap Force forum.

  • Bumble Blast / Honey Tree is being considered for A Tier. Comments and opinions would be appreciated!
  • Slobber Tooth / Seismic Tail is being considered for E Tier. Comments and opinions would be appreciated!

I think we should re-shuffle the tiers and see where all they fit in now. Considering we already heard quite a few nerfs/buffs, I wouldn't be surprised if a A tier suddenly became a D-tier (Not that it would happen, of course).

I guess its my turn then.

I highly recomend Smolderdash on the Sun Forger path. She is an overall strong Skylander but you get out everything from her with this path. Her firewhip is already strong at the beginning ang gets even stronger after an upgrade. Her sun orbs arent very strong and THATS why you should take this path. But her secret is the eclipse mode. She gets 2 firewhips, her suns turn into black holes which suck in your enemy (even in pvp) and her sun blast is not a sun anymore neither. Its a black hole too. The smolder dash is a nice adition to her gameplay to get away fast when the health is low. Your question may be: Why this path? Its easy to answer. You can charge up your suns to deal more damage, they get stronger and you can speed them up when you attack them with your whip which makes her SUPER SLOW orbs really fast ( charged up supersuns split into 3 smaler ones) . And instead of 24 damage they deal 70!!! They even travel over obstacles. They get even stronger in eclipse mode AND suck in the other player. A very good technique to prevent him from running away. Just spam it and ill highly doubt that youll lose. The sun blast out of sky is sucking in too and let you whip the foe.
I would put her in A-Tier. She is a very strong Skylander but not broken.

Another Skylander I've been testing is Star Strike.

OOH MAN. Now SHE is a strong Skylander on the Magic Reflector path. DO NOT EVEN DARE TO TOUCH THE STAR GAZER PATH, THE STAR RAIN IS USELESS!! Sorry if this sounded offensive smilie You barely use her Star rain attck since its easy to dodge and reflecting them isnt worth it since they dont deal a lot damage. How should you play her?? Reflect your basic star. You know the one you are shooting at fist when prassing attack1. When you are on the MR path the star is dealing 40 damage after reflecting it 4 times. If you are lucky its hiting 2 times (first shooting it and another time when it comes back). Whats her secret? She can use the spin WHILE IN THE AIR!! You can use it while jumping, using a bounce pad or falling down a cliff. So that you reflect it a million times. And while the star is travelling you can shoot her small stars to deal even more damage!! She can reflect the enemies projectiles too!! If Blast Zone uses his bombs, just reflect them. It doent matter if Whirlwind rainbows, Hex' orbs or Zoo Loos birds. Just reflect them. Its ALWAYS dealing 35-50 damage (dont know exactly). If you fight a ranged charackter just reflect their attacks and your star. If you fight a melee charackter just run away and reflect your star. And mabey even use the star rain attack. It will always hit. Even through walls and the ground. You will always win.
Star Strike is a broken Charackter and deserved to be S-Tier.

@gillgrunt987: I'm happy to consider wiping the old 'Giants tier list and starting clean if we run in to enough problems that it becomes our best option. For the moment, I have faith that if enough people start looking in to the old Skylanders instead of concentrating on the new ones, we should be able to re-arrange the old Skylanders enough that they eventually form a decently accurate tier list for us to compare the new Skylanders to.
That said, I am still open to suggestions to the contrary, so if enough people advocate wiping the tier list and starting again then that's what we'll do.

On that note, may I remind everyone that the strengths and weaknesses of all of the old Skylanders have dramaticly changed, and it is very important that we re-evaluate most of the old Skylanders before we add too many new Skylanders to the list. A lot of Tier placements in this thread are made based on comparisons, and there's no point rating the new Skylanders against the tier positions of the old Skylanders when those old Skylanders aren't in the right tiers to begin with!
(I may add an announcement about this to the first post some time soon.)

@Takadox360: You've put forward strong proposals for Smolderdash / Sun Forger and Star Strike / Magic Reflector there, and your suggestions for which exact tiers they should go in sound fairly reasonable based on your explanation which is good enough for this stage in the tier list. I'll put your suggestions up for other people's opinions:

  • Bumble Blast / Honey Tree is being considered for A Tier. Do you agree or disagree? Opinions would be appreciated!
  • Slobber Tooth / Seismic Tail is being considered for E Tier. Do you agree or disagree? Opinions would be appreciated!
  • Smolderdash / Sun Forger is being considered for A Tier. Do you agree or disagree? Opinions would be appreciated!
  • Star Strike / Magic Reflector is being considered for S Tier. Do you agree or disagree? Opinions would be appreciated!
  • Can I finally remind everyone that I am still open to suggestions about how the swapping abilities of the Swaplanders should be accounted for in the tier list. Specifically, I am personally wondering whether anyone else thinks we should list the top and bottom halves of each Swaplander as individual contenders, or whether we should continue considering them in combination with other halves?
