That part about the stress relief..... that's one of the things that all video games bring to me. It lets me forget about my daily stress, what with having to hunt down Mavericks every day (and having to listen to X's constant whining), and allows me to have lots of fun.

I'm just gonna set the record straight, here...
If you don't enjoy life now, you might as well be good as dead. If you like Skylanders, play Skylanders. You like food, eat food Parties, fairy tales, video games, whatever... Just do it. If it makes YOU happy, you shouldn't care what others think. I know darn well I'm gonna be like 80-something, and STILL be playing Pokemon, or collecting Skylanders.

I get comments all the time teasing me about how I love a 'kids game' but the truth is - I like the toys a lot and the game is super fun - so it's a great combo for a person like me!

Yep, I get teased and rediculed allot about playing 'kids games' even from my own family (it's evil that with the exception of my nephew, I'm the only one who plays these kinds of games.) Do i let that stop me? No, I'm gonna play them no matter what they say.
To be honest, with me, I've never really stuck to a certain group when it comes to things I like... From music, to games, to shows, and stuff I pick what I like based on the game/show/song itself. I don't care what the catergory. Honestly, there are some games I'm like 'that'll be no fun' then after I tried them, I began to like them.

If someone gives you crap about Skylanders being a "kiddie game", just look 'em in the eye and say "Skylanders isn't a kiddie game... there's no way a kid could afford all of this!"

I always get dirty looks from Parents. I hate it. I'm like "Why does it matter?" Most parents let their 10 year old kids play CoD, Gta and Saints Row, yet not letting them get Skylanders because its too 'childish' is ridiculous. Kids should be able to be kids. It's a once-in-a-lifetime thing...

you know im in school, people see my skylanders merchandise and sat that its a game for elementary schoolers, it gets really tedious, my older siblings like it so they can't say its a game for little kids when adults play it, and besides it's a good game, just work on the plot and replace that godawful Kaos

I'm 12 yet when I go to buy Skylanders or My little Ponies I can feel a little bit embarrassed. I know I will never see the people around me again but.. I just do. Its the same for when i'm at school. If someone says I like My little Pony or Skylanders then I feel dead and would just melt away. But I suppose I should be proud of what I like? I don't want to be the same as everyone else!

I'm 22 and I buy whatever I dang well feel like. Whether it's Pokemon or Skylanders figures. It's my money, who are they to judge? It's like that good ol' C.S. Lewis quote:

There's a ToysRUs near my high school, and I feel embarrased when I go there.
It's OK that you do something different, but I wouldn't consider this different, since there are so many other individuals that are doing the exact same thing. This site reassures me that I'm not alone, nor is any other teen / adult Portal Master out there. Ignore the embarrassment of playing a child's game. No matter what, don't judge others if they do something you feel is "odd" or weird.

I'm 31 and I love skylanders! We bought this for my son for Christmas last year (he was 4yo then) so I helped him with it and I fell in love with the story and lore and everything. Now we have one variation of each character except wham shell and while I can use my son as an excuse I honestly get them because I like them :-) my dad is my biggest critic because he feels the franchise is money grab. My opinion is this is the first game I've enjoyed since super Mario on SNES and if this is how I want to spend my money then it's fine. He has 3 playstations for different rooms and co-OP play and every CoD, Mafia, GTA, etc game.
I played with dolls longer than a cares to admit back in middle school so maybe I've always been a bit childish. I've never fit into a single group and I learned to live on the outside of all the cliques growing up. At this point in my life I have a wonderful family and a professional career and I can get along with most anyone. You have to be happy with who you are regardless of others or you will always be pretending to be something you aren't and that is no way to live.

Interesting topic. My answer pretty much boils down to "Don't spend too much time thinking about other people's opinions". I am 41, and love the skylanders games. In general, I am not really interested in violent games at all, I like cartoony, fun stuff. When sort of a similar thread appeared on the Infinity Fans forum, one of the game designers had a great answer for a guy who wasn't sure if he was too old for this game. He said something like "I can assure you that you perfectly fit our demographics of people who like fun games". Brilliant answer, for my money.
I've got a lovely daughter, a terrific girlfriend, a strange job, a nice place to live and no time for people who want to tell me what to do with my time. I've always been extremely eclectic with my interestes, and I think everyone should be. I like death metal, baking cakes, reading books about evolutionary biology and ancient history, modern art, deconstructionist architecture, sepias and all other animals with tentacles, poems by Robert Frost and Blixa Bargeld, british comedy shows (the german ones are just too depressing) and, well, computer games which use colourful plastic figurines. And rightly so, they are jolly good fun.

Yes! That is the point! Skylanders let me do a thing I've always wanted to do, in a video game: have the ability to choose from a lot of different and original characters, and play compleately free as one of them. It's just perfect!

...Fascinating.
I think the sort of social stigma you're referring to really becomes prominent with people during their high school years. I'm going to avoid generalizing anything, but I've noticed huge numbers of peers who become extremely obsessed with maintaining a good social image. And I think games like this are connected to it. My friends and I mostly spent our time in elementary and early middle school with Nintendo or Sony's more kid-friendly games like Spyro. Then everything shifted and they started buying more "hardcore" games. People stopped bringing handheld gaming devices to school because most of the games on those would be considered "children's games." But then college rolled around and people just stopped really caring. We all went back to doing things that we enjoy. I prefer cartoonier games like Mario, Kirby, Pokémon, or Ratchet & Clank. And I don't really tend to care much if other people don't see eye-to-eye with me in that regard. I'll just look to hang around with people that are still enthusiastic about games like this. Now, it just so happens that 1) there's only one Gamestop near where I live and nothing else, so I tend to order games online to begin with (Amazon Prime is really handy and easily pays for itself), and 2) I care not for Skylanders because it's not something that particularly appeals to me, especially with the hefty financial burden attached to it. I'm just posting here for science, naturally. ^.^; But I do agree with pretty much everyone else that you should be free to play the games you enjoy without facing heavy scrutiny. And if you do face scrutiny, just smile, say "that's nice" in your most pleasant tone of voice possible, and walk away and/or give your business to someone who won't judge. <.<

HIR is correct, when i was in sixxth grade, I knew a really cool 8th grader, we discussed skylanders and pokemon, and then when she went to high school she acted like she hated it when other people were around

The girl was being extremely unprofessional and she should be embarrassed about her behavior. She should not try to discourage you from buying a video game at the store that pays her to sell video games. Her company only exists because of the deals it makes with gaming companies to secure things like the exclusive Dark Starter Pack. Those sort of deals are why Gamestop has survived where many other game stores have failed. I'm not looking to cause trouble for anyone, but it would do her and the store a lot of good to speak to a manager about this experience. Game store employees should not be shaming people away from Skylanders.
As far as the age goes, I don't know of any children who can buy Skylanders without the help of adults, and I don't know any kids who have Skylanders without parents who also enjoy the games. |

My dad is turning 75 this month. Every Tuesday, my brother, 40+ goes over to his house and they play video games together. If I lived near them, I'd probably join them.
My son is 6 but I let him play everything I play. But that's how it's always been for my family. We have bonded around video games, starting with Pong way back in the day. When playing Skylanders isn't fun for my son and I then we'll just move on to something else. Maybe more Disney Infinity, maybe something else, doesn't matter to me now. So, 'Kid' game, 'Adult' game, whatever. It's a game, and if you like playing it, then go for it. |
