At the 8:28 mark it shows Rattle Shake's Soul Gem and him being purple. So this kind of proves that there is no purple variant and that it's simply a new skin (literally) based on an ability.

The Beings of Avarice could always make New Skin Rattle shake as a varient
Could start out with his soul gem from the start *HIR'd and/or Matteomax'd*

So far it still confirms that only Series 3 Skylanders are able to switch paths at will.
