I got a brand new Prism Break in the box and he turned out to have been played previously.
I don't really care that much, as the person saved me some time in leveling him up, but I was wondering how the community felt about this. I suppose that you can never really know if someone has done this because many sellers who do this would probably just wipe the Skylander clean before sale.

You don't need to do a trick, just simply put it on with the packaging on.

We bought SSA on sale at Target after Giants. The box seemed sealed but the disc wasn't and all the characters were leveled up with hats on. I was disappointed and sad that someone worked so hard to be deceptive. We just reset the characters and everything else worked like new so we kept it.

I can understand with the individual characters; having a but tougher time with the starter pack situation. I guess I would either get over it or get a replacement; however a simple wipe is effective to "start over".

I wouldn't mind as long as the seal has never been broken.
Same goes for games.

Yeah I don't have an issue with it really, although I know little about the technology side of it, how much "use" this really adds to a character. I assume whatever system they use to store data is not likely to "wear out" any time soon.

Yeah as long as they worked fine...who cares? And if there in a sealed package...and you where doing the collector thing....just reset them an quickly remove it before it sets to your game...simple enough.

Well, this is kind of like the used/open game argument. There is a lot of hub-bub about Gamestop "gutting" games for display. People in general just want something that has been "untouched" when they pay new prices. Used games mostly play just fine and Skylanders can easily be reset, but if you are paying "new" price it isn't unreasonable to expect a "new" product, particularly for an item that is sealed.
Now of course, this has to be countered with expectation of a return policy. A liberal return policy means that many times a retailer must attempt to re-sell a returned product or charge a restocking fee to cover "open item" discounts. It all depends on your perspective, some people don't mind if it has been opened. I tend to hang onto my games, so I prefer unopened - but that is just me. I don't mind shopping at a store that will not take opened games as returns (except for defect), that's the price I pay for my preference. |

I think it's a bit hypocritical that, in general, this community tends to be "up in arms" regarding "scalping", but it seems that most of the comments here reflect a complete or near-complete indifference towards people who buy Skylanders, play them, and then return them to stores as if they were unused.

Yes, it is a bit hypocritical. I'm definitely (as I mentioned) on the side of having "not played" stuff when I buy new. I have a long, well documented track record of disliking scalpers. It is also hypocritical (as I also mentioned) to expect always "untouched" items, yet expect a liberal return policy that takes things back, no questions ask or restocking fees. People that buy and return items after being used hurt prices and return policies for us all. |

Aye. This comparison of two equally unethical/shady/opportunistic (whatever adjective one prefers) practices more-or-less confirms something I've believed for a while now. In general, our community doesn't REALLY care a lot about the economic or legal/ethical implications of "scalping" ... rather, when in comes down to it, we really only care about availability of items we want at retail prices. This is confirmed, in my mind, because the practice of returning boxed used Skylanders isn't frowned upon (even though it's just as "bad" as "scalping"), simply because the practice increases retail availability rather than decreasing it.

Well, it is frowned upon by many, one user got quite an ear full when he openly admitted doing that with Series 2 Spyro and Wrecking Ball. I wouldn't call it "bad" in the sense of harmful (since it does make it available to someone who might want it regardless), however it is very dishonest. Walmart in particular does some very shady things (and some think it is ok because of this), but that doesn't justify the action of returning used merchandise - besides it doesn't hurt them anyways, they just pass it on to the next buyer.

On the flip side, many came to his defense and went after those who spoke out against the practice. I'd say it was pretty split on who was okay with it and who wasn't. That isn't meant to imply that it's split on who actually does it. I'm guessing it's really a fairly small percentage of folks who buy/return. It doesn't make it any better though. |

I think its dishonest to return used items..whether they are in original packaging or not. I expext a new product when I pay new prices. Now, would I return a skylander that I found out had been played previously. .probably not if my son was opening it to play with anyway.

I will admit its a little mindblowing to get an in-box used figure but I'm not going to kill someone for it. I mean now that everyone knows the little portal trick, I cant be too surprised. But as long as the figure works and its in good condition, I could careless.

I have been doing this with Disney Infinity power disc packs but I would never do it with the figures or Skylanders it seems unethical to return them after playing with them for hours...
